TMC, CPI(M) seek booster in Bengal, Kerala; BJP, AAP look to retain Gujarat, Punjab seats
ON THURSDAY, five Assembly seats across four states will vote in bypolls.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the CPI(M) are looking at the bypolls in West Bengal and Kerala, where they are in power respectively, as precursors to the Assembly polls slated next year in their states.
The BJP wants to retain its old bastion in Gujarat, but it is also hoping to clinch another seat where the AAP is steadily growing. In Punjab, the ruling AAP is facing a challenge from not only the Congress but also the BJP.
Results are out on June 23.
Nilambur (Kerala)
The bypoll here was necessitated by the resignation of the CPI(M)-backed Independent legislator P V Anvar. The Congress, which lost the seat in 2021 by 2,700 votes, has mounted a stiff challenge, nominating old-timer Aryadan Shoukath. CM Pinarayi Vijayan has handpicked M Swaraj as the CPM candidate.
Kaliganj (West Bengal)
In the 2021 Assembly polls, TMC leader Nasiruddin Ahmed won Kaliganj by 46,987 votes against the BJP's Abhijit Ghosh. It was Ahmed's second win from the seat. Ahmed died in February this year after a cardiac arrest. His daughter Alifa Ahmed is now contesting the bypoll on the TMC's ticket. She is taking on the BJP's Ashish Ghosh and the Congress's Kabil Uddin.
The campaigns have been charged. The BJP has targeted the TMC over the Murshidabad riots. And the TMC has accused the BJP of communal polarisation.
Visavadar (Gujarat)
Visvadar in Gujarat's Junagadh district fell vacant after sitting AAP MLA Bhupendra Bhayani joined the ruling BJP. Bhayani is not contesting the seat, with the BJP having fielded Kirit Patel, a cooperative leader and a former district party president. The AAP has fielded Gopal Italia, one of the faces of the Patidar agitation in the state.
Kadi (Gujarat)
In the 2022 polls, the BJP's Karsanbhai Punjabhai Solanki won 53.45% of the total votes. The Congress came second.
The SC-reserved seat fell vacant after Solanki died in February. The BJP has fielded Rajendra Kumar Daneshwar Chavda,while the Congress has nominated Rameshbhai Chavda. The AAP has fielded Jagdishbhai Ganpatbhai Chavda here.
Ludhiana West (Punjab)
This bypoll was necessitated by the death of AAP's Gurpreet Bassi Gogi. It has fielded industrialist and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora. AAP top brass, including Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, have campaigned. The Congress has fielded Bharat Bhushan Ashu and seems to be getting traction.

West Bengal BJP chief faces flak over ‘sex workers' remark
West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president and Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar has landed into a controversy for a remark directed at sex workers in Kolkata's Sonagachi area. The Trinamool Congress on Saturday (June 21, 2025) criticised Mr. Majumdar's remarks and demanded an 'unconditional apology' from the BJP leader. During an altercation with the police on Friday (June 20, 2025), Mr. Majumdar compared Bengal's law and order situation with 'sex workers.' West Bengal Minister Sashi Panja said that though Sukanta Majumdar claims to be a teacher, but his remarks are 'very disgusting, very disparaging and very disgraceful'. 'He has said that the law and order situation or the law in Bengal can be equated to Songachi sex workers. This is so humiliating to Sonagachi sex workers and we stand by them.' Dr Panja, who represents the constituency where Sonagachi is located. The West Bengal ruling party said using one of the 'most vulnerable groups in our society as a punchline for political mudslinging is inexcusable' and added that those 'who spew such filth have no moral right to occupy any Constitutional office'. The remark by the BJP president comes at a time when the BJP leadership is demanding action against Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal, who used vile language against the mother and wife of the officer-in-charge of Bolpur Police station. An FIR has been filed against Mr. Mondal and the National Commission for Women has sought an action taken report from the police for the TMC leader's remarks. While the police are of the opinion that there is no necessity to arrest the TMC leader, the State ruling has let off Anubrata Mondal without any punishment after he tendered a public apology.

Former Corporators Ramp Up Public Outreach In Build-Up To Civic Polls
1 2 3 Nagpur: With civic election procedures gaining momentum, former corporators across the city have become increasingly active in reconnecting with their wards and addressing unresolved civic issues, filling the vacuum created by over three years under the civic administration. Already, the senior rung of leaders in the BJP camp, including CM Devendra Fadnavis, Union minister Nitin Gadkari, and even guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, have started holding Janta Darbars. In Prabhag 26, senior BJP leader and former corporator Dharmapal Meshram recently conducted a detailed review of persistent civic problems. Acting on a slew of complaints from residents, particularly dysfunctional street lights and domestic electricity issues, Meshram held meetings with officials from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) and Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). Meshram called a joint meeting involving Mahavitaran officials, party workers, and citizens to address household power issues. He also instructed the electrical department to immediately repair defunct street lights and install new ones where necessary to restore street illumination in the area. Meshram is not alone. Vijay aka Pintu Zalke, another former corporator, has also intensified his public outreach. Like others, he has been trying to fill the political void left by the dissolution of the NMC's general body in March 2022 which led to bureaucratic governance without elected representation. With polls likely in the coming months, Zalke and others have begun directly engaging with citizens, addressing grievances, and reviving their grassroots presence. Former BJP city chief Jitendra Kukde, too, has returned to active fieldwork in his former ward. "As I was busy with both Lok Sabha and Assembly elections after being appointed city president, I missed regular interactions with people of my Prabhag," said Kukde, who was later replaced by Dayashankar Tiwari. Now out of party office, Kukde is back on the ground, attempting to rebuild his image and rapport with voters. Several ex-corporators have also reopened their contact offices to directly receive complaints. Former women corporators from opposition camps like Sneha Nikose and Shakshi Raut have become proactive, addressing issues like sewer blockages, irregular garbage collection, low water pressure, and damaged public infrastructure. These efforts come as citizens grow increasingly frustrated with the lukewarm response of the civic officials. With many wards still plagued by basic issues — ranging from faulty street lights and choked drains to uncollected garbage — former corporators are leveraging this discontent to re-establish their political relevance. The surge in activity suggests that while the municipal body remains under administrative control, the unofficial race for the civic body's 151 seats has already begun on the ground.

Congress names 40 district, city unit chiefs for Gujarat
After a process that lasted more than two months and saw senior Congress leaders visit 26 Lok Sabha constituencies, 182 Assembly segments, and 235 Blocks, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) Saturday appointed 40 chiefs of district and city units for Gujarat under the the 'Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan' — a pilot project intended to empower the district units. The list saw only one woman leader, Sonal Patel, who will head the Ahmedabad City unit. Patel, a former vice president of the Congress Mahila Morcha was the candidate against Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the 2024 LS polls from Gandhinagar constituency. She replaces former mayor and ex-MLA Himmatsinh Patel. 'Ahmedabad city president is a position that carries a lot of weight,' said a Congress leader. At least five of the DCC presidents were repeated — Rutvij Joshi (Vadodara city), Jashpalsinh Padhiyar (Vadodara district), Naushad Solanki (Surendranagar), Pratap Dudhat (Amreli), and Rajendrasinh Rana (Bharuch city). The party said the newly appointed DCC chiefs 'represent Gujarat's social and regional diversity and have been chosen for their grassroots connection, ideological clarity, and organisational ability'. At the AICC Session on April 9-10 in Gujarat, held in the state for the first time in about 60 years, district units were identified as key building blocks to build the Congress back-up. While this is a nationwide project, the Congress launched the pilot from Gujarat, a state where the party has been out of power now for 30 years and which is identified most closely with the BJP's rise post-Modi. The party on April 12 appointed 43 AICC and 183 PCC observers comprising senior leaders, including state in-charges, MPs, MLAs, and former PCC presidents, to oversee the appointments and make recommendations to the party high command.
