Wayward Sydney sink Port Adelaide to revive season
Sydney have overcome severe goalkicking yips to sink Port Adelaide by 19 points for a season-reviving away win.
The Swans triumphed 9.17 (71) to 7.10 (52) at Adelaide Oval on Saturday to climb two rungs to 11th on the ladder.
Despite butchering a series of shots, Sydney (six wins, eight losses) are now only two victories outside the top eight - the same as 12th-placed Port.
The Swans were inspired by Isaac Heeney and captain Callum Mills, while Will Hayward booted three majors, including two in 60 seconds.
Hayward's strikes came in an opening half when the visitors were in command but logged an inaccurate 4.10 to 2.4 for an 18-point halftime lead.
Sydney slipped 27 points clear when Heeney goaled in the third term before a brief cameo from Port's Wille Rioli threatened to turn the tide to the home side.
Rioli scored one major and set up another in a three-minute patch as the Power crept within 16 points - their three-quarter-time deficit.
But Sydney champ Heeney and the unheralded Hayward soon effectively sealed the result.
The dynamic duo goaled inside the initial eight minutes of the final term to take the sting fully from Port, who were 32 points down before scoring three late goals.
Heeney was brilliant in his roaming role, gathering a match-high 29 disposals and 13 contested possessions.
Mills (27 possessions, eight marks) and the rebounding Nick Blakey (22 touches, one goal) and Angus Sheldrick (21 disposals) all found plenty of the ball.
Brodie Grundy ruled the rucks with 35 hitouts and 22 disposals, and, on return from injury, Errol Gulden (18 possessions) and Tom Papley (16) showed glimpses.
But another returning Swan, Joel Amartey, was the chief culprit in his side's waste.
Amartey booted 0.6 - another 40m attempt fell short, and he sprayed a set shot out-on-the-full in the final quarter.
Chad Warner, Papley and Sheldrick all returned 0.2.
Port, after consecutive wins, were flat and unable to source a multiple goal-scorer.
Vice-captain Zak Butters (28 disposals, one goal) and skipper Connor Rozee (25 disposals) toiled gamely without massive impact.
Forward Sam Powell-Pepper (20 touches) and winger Jase Burgoyne (20) also battled against the Sydney tide.

‘What else is he meant to do?': GWS gun taken out in brutal bump
Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL. Followed categories will be added to My News. GWS Giants star Lachie Whitfield got cleaned up by a brutal bump against the Gold Coast Suns, but Suns spearhead Ben King is expected to escape punishment for the hit. The incident occurred late in the first quarter of the clash between two AFL expansion sides on Sunday afternoon in Sydney, as GWS claimed a thrilling seven-point win. Whitfield was taken down to the Giants changerooms and was ruled out of the game with concussion, replaced by substitute Jake Stringer in the second quarter. Fox Footy's Alastair Lynch said: 'Ben King comes in and certainly his left shoulder hits Lachie Whitfield in the jaw and he goes down. 'He stayed out on the ground but he was assessed by video and they got him off the ground. 'I think Ben King should be right with that one. He was looking to protect the ball with his body and he hits Lachie Whitfield at the same time.' Fox Footy Tribunal expert David Zita said: 'Ben King was contesting the ball reasonably here, I think. He was running through the line. I don't know what else he was supposed to do in that situation. 'I don't think the action was a reportable offence. I don't see him having anything to worry about. What else is he meant to do?' Lachie Whitfield got crunched by Ben King. Photo: Fox Footy. The bump is certainly not dead — Geelong's Tom Stewart was cleared of any wrongdoing for his crunching bump on Gold Coast's Noah Anderson earlier this month. GWS recovered from a poor first quarter to claim a thrilling comeback win over the Suns to consolidate their position in the top eight. Gold Coast kicked four goals in the first four minutes of the game to take a big early lead, posting seven goals to four in a dominant opening quarter. But the Giants fought back and took the lead midway through the final quarter, kicking eight goals to three in the final term. 'It's a classic game, everybody is lifting,' Gerard Healy said on Fox Footy. Stringer and GWS captain Toby Greene kicked two goals each as the Giants surged in front in a highscoring final quarter, holding on to win 16.10 (106) to 14.15 (99). 'This is exactly why we got him here and he'll just get better,' Greene said about Stringer post-game. The Suns have never won at ENGIE Stadium in Sydney and will slip out of the top eight, while the Giants head to the bye after recording wins over Brisbane and Gold Coast. Super Netball, round 11: Swifts beat Giants in NSW derby, all but end rival's finals hopes
The Giants' chances of making an unlikely finals run have all but ended but not without giving ladder leaders the NSW Swifts a massive fright in a thrilling NSW derby. While there was a considerable Kiwi flavour to the match, with the past and future of the Silver Ferns going head-to-head, it was a pair of locals that took the match out of Giants hands, with veteran Swifts captain Paige Hadley and rising defensive star Teigan O'Shannassy sealing the win for the locals. The Giants led by 11 at the opening break after holding the Swifts to their lowest first-quarter score of the season but in a match that could define their season, the women in red fought back to win 75-66, only hitting the front for the first time in the final term. After eight consecutive wins there were plenty believing the Swifts could not be challenged for the title this season but back-to-back losses in the fortnight heading into the derby made the clash a crucial one for both teams. The Giants sprinted from the blocks, scoring the opening four goals of the game and restricted the Swifts to their lowest opening-period of the season, conceding just 10 goals to take an 11-point lead to the opening break. The league leaders started to claw their way back in the second quarter but still trailed by eight at halftime. But an 8-1 run to start the third quarter got them back in the game and after a 24-16 period, they went to the final break with scores level, hitting the front for the first time in the match when they opened the scoring in the final term. They went on with it, unstoppable in the final term as they gained momentum and confidence. 'I feel like that was a full team effort, obviously not the way we wanted to start that game but to be able to grind it out in those last three (quarters), I couldn't be prouder,' said Hadley, who finished with 18 goal assists, 28 feeds and two deflections in a points win over fellow Diamonds midcourter Jamie-Lee Price. 'To have 10,000 people here in red supporting us, we knew this one was a must-win for us, for our season, so a huge effort.' KIWIS' PAST AND FUTURE The trans-Tasman league may have ended almost a decade ago, but it was a contest between two Silver Ferns greats that was a major talking point in this game as former captain and Giants recruit Casey Kopua, who celebrated her 40th birthday during the week, and 23-year-old shooter Grace Nweke went head to head. Kopua finished with four gains - three of those coming in an enormous first quarter effort - but again, it was the direction and confidence she gave to fellow defender Erin O'Brien that was most telling. Nweke finished with 52 goals, 34 of those coming in the second half as the Swifts found their range and got the ball into the circle more directly and rapidly. HAS GIANTS' RUN STOPPED? The Giants were on the bottom of the ladder when Kopua joined them following the season-ending knee injury to Jamaican defender Jodi-Ann Ward. They notched back-to-back wins for the first time in two years ahead of the derby and a win would have given them an outside mathematical chance of a fairytale finals berth. That can't happen now but they will challenge teams in the final three rounds and could have a huge say in the make-up of the final four given they still face the Fever in round 13. TOSSY ON SONG The Swifts have plenty of match-winners and a core of vastly experienced players but Teigan O'Shannassy is making a case to be included in their starting seven as they ramp up their title challenge. The 188cm defender was brought into the match late in the first term but it was not until challenged by coach Briony Akle that she took off. 'I wasn't going for ball, I was letting them take over and Briony said 'pull your finger out', so I did,' O'Shannassy said. She finished with six gains, six deflections and four rebounds in a game-changing effort that would have been watched closely by Diamonds coach Stacey Marinkovich.
