South Korean shares off 3-1/2-year high after US strikes on Iran

SEOUL: Round-up of South Korean financial markets: South Korean shares fell on Monday as tensions escalated in the Middle East following the US strikes on Iran. The benchmark KOSPI lost 19.10 points, or 0.63%, to 3,002.74 as of 0243 GMT. On Friday, the index climbed above a key milestone of 3,000 points for the first time in 3-1/2 years. On Sunday, the world braced for Iran's response after the US attacked key Iranian nuclear sites, joining Israel in the biggest Western military action against the Islamic Republic since its 1979 revolution. South Korea's acting finance minister said authorities will closely monitor the financial markets and energy supplies and respond if needed. The country's exports for the first 20 days of June jumped 8.3% year-on-year after falling for the first time in four months in May, early data showed. South Korea's top trade negotiator said on Sunday he would raise concerns about potential US curbs on chipmakers in China at the meeting with US officials in Washington this week for the third round of technical discussions in tariff talks. Among index heavyweights, chipmaker Samsung Electronics fell 2.61% and peer SK Hynix lost 0.39%. Battery maker LG Energy Solution slid 3.93%. Hyundai Motor and sister automaker Kia dropped 4.05% and 3.14%, respectively. Steelmaker POSCO Holdings slid 3.62% and drugmaker Samsung BioLogics fell 2.17%. Of the total 936 traded issues, 246 advanced and 664 declined. Foreigners were net sellers of shares worth 345.6 billion won ($250.4 million). The won was quoted at 1,380.0 per US dollar on the onshore settlement platform, 0.43% lower than Friday's close of 1,374.0.

Global turmoil If Iran shuts Strait of Hormuz — but Pakistan may get a pass

Amid rising regional tensions and in reaction to last night attacks, the Iranian parliament has approved the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, pending final approval by the Supreme Commander. Hormuz is a critical oil transit route to the Western and Gulf adversaries, though this selective blockade may shield Pakistan and China from direct disruption due to friendly relationship with Iran, the global fallout would still be severe specifically for the countries standing against Iran. Roughly 25–30% of the world's oil flows through the Strait. Even a partial closure could drive oil prices above $150 per barrel, disrupt global shipping lanes and trigger worldwide inflation. The situation is already tightening, freights and global premiums on petroleum products have risen since the outbreak of conflict between Iran and Israel. If cargoes heading to Pakistan are allowed to pass may shield Pakistan from immediate disruption. However, the global fallout would be severe, especially for nations aligned against Iran. For Pakistan, the scenario presents a mixed picture. Continued access to Hormuz could help maintain energy supplies and even open up closer economic ties with Iran. At home, this crisis again highlights Pakistan's indecision on its 'oil refining policy', which has remained in the doldrums for over four years. There was hope that in the upcoming FY budget issues related to the policy are going to be resolved though it had further negative impact on the existing refineries. The imposition of carbon and petroleum levies on Furnace oil will raise its price by more than 80% proving to be death knell of quite a few industries including refineries, shipping and IPPs which use it as fuel or own use in utilities operations. Is this the import mafia or its deep pockets are consistently trying to shut down the local refineries? The strategic importance of local refining capacity only comes into focus during such external shocks, yet little progress has been made in upgrading or incentivizing the sector despite all out efforts of SIFC in order to attract $ 6 Billion investment in refineries. While short-term trade may continue, Pakistan's fragile economy cannot absorb a prolonged oil price spike above $100 per barrel. The government must now act with foresight to avoid being caught off guard in an increasingly volatile energy landscape.

North Korea condemns US strike on Iran as violation of sovereign rights

SEOUL: North Korea said on Monday it strongly condemns the US strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities as a grave violation of a sovereign state's security interests and territorial rights, the North's state media reported. The United States and Israel are the culprits of the current tensions in the Middle East born out of Jerusalem's 'ceaseless war moves and territorial expansion' accepted and encouraged by the West,' North Korea's foreign ministry said. '(North Korea) strongly denounces the attack on Iran by the US which … violently trampled down the territorial integrity and security interests of a sovereign state,' the unnamed spokesperson said in a statement carried by KCNA news agency. 'The just international community should raise the voice of unanimous censure and rejection against the US and Israel's confrontational acts,' the statement said. Iran and nuclear-armed North Korea have maintained friendly ties and have been suspected for decades of military cooperation including in developing ballistic missiles. A now-defunct panel of experts monitoring UN sanctions said in 2021 that the two countries had resumed cooperation on long-range missile development projects, including the transfer of critical parts. 'Pyongyang could provide important assistance in helping Iran reconstitute destroyed missile production facilities, including at new sites to avoid scrutiny, perhaps,' said Ankit Panda, of the US-based Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Whether either country would be interested in substantively cooperating on any efforts to rebuild or accelerate Iran's nuclear weapons programme is less certain, given the political and military sensitivities over such technology, he said. 'There are certain matters pertaining to weapons design that the North Koreans would not want to proliferate because once in Iran, they could be discovered by the United States and potentially assist the US in undermining its deterrent,' Panda said. Iran weighs retaliation against US for strikes on nuclear sites However, Pyongyang has substantive experience in weaponisation and could be able to assist in the non-fissile components of a nuclear bomb, such as the conventional explosives, he added. North Korea has taken unprecedented steps in the past year to deepen military assistance to Russia, another partner of Iran, by sending thousands of troops as well as ballistic missiles and other weapons for use in fighting Ukraine, according to US, Ukrainian, and other intelligence sources.
