
Beloved Inner Sydney pub The Norfolk has reopened with a fresh new look after a two year hiatus
It's a big week for re-launches. Just as Freda's opens up its third iteration – Bar Freda's – in an intimate two-story space in Chippo, one of the most beloved pubs in the Inner City has reopened with a fresh new 'do. Straddling the border of Redfern and Surry Hills, The Norfolk is back in a big way – this time, with neighbourhood values (and a killer ice-cream lamington) at its heart. This is all thanks to the new ownership by Sydney group Solotel, who have taken over the watering hole from Public Hospitality, following a challenging few years (to say the least).
Back in 2013, Time Out Sydney described The Norfolk as 'a party pub… good at walking the fine line between scheduled activities and unstructured revelry.' And in its latest form, it's still flying that flag: with an excellent happy hour (4-6pm Mondays through Fridays), Tuesday night trivia, 'spin the wheel' every Thursday, a hefty meat raffle every Friday and a fun, welcoming vibe that will keep you long into the night. But this time, things have stepped up a notch – with an on-point cocktail menu (order the pickle Martini) and schmick, warmly lit interiors that honour the pub's Art Deco roots with a refined sense of style.
'The Norfolk has always stood for good times, great food and that sense of belonging you only get from your local,' says Marcella Guilfoyle, the pub's general manager.
A neighbourhood drinking hole at its heart, the new iteration of The Norfolk hasn't cut any corners when it comes to the booze list. With a focus on local, the wine list is ever-evolving and nicely priced, and alongside the local beers (including a Norfolk-exclusive dark beer from Yulli's Brews) you'll find a carefully curated cocktail list featuring aperitivo-inspired drinks and some delicious, creative non-alc options. Honouring their 'party pub' values, The Norfolk is also serving up batch-made cocktails (including Negronis, Americanos and a perfectly zesty Tommy's Margarita) on tap, available to order by the glass or by the carafe.
Reflecting the neighbourhood-focused ethos, the menu has been designed in collaboration with local businesses, and it's bloody good as a result. With Toby Wilson (executive chef and 'Chief Taco Officer' at the adjoining Ricos Tacos) at the helm, the kitchen elevates old-school pub classics, and draws on the expertise of local stalwarts to bring you the best of what Redfern has to offer. French onion dip comes with freshly baked focaccia from Good Ways Deli, and the beloved Redfern sandwich shop has also teamed up with local gelateria Ciccone and Sons for The Norfolk's signature dessert: a perfectly fluffy lamington ice-cream sandwich. Other menu highlights include the gloriously loaded chicken and gravy rolls, hearty-as-heck beef and VB party pies, and a signature house-made sausage roll that's sold by the inch ($2 per inch at happy hour).
Through and through, The Norfolk is a celebration of its setting – an ode to the people and businesses that build the culture of Sydney's quirky, colourful Inner City suburbs. And don't worry, Rico's Tacos isn't going anywhere.

This Dublin hotel features in Michelin Guide to best boutique hotels
The Georgian Townhouse's tagline is "Style Stays Here". On entering the sunken bar is already buzzing with visitors helping themselves from the well-stocked honesty bar. This was Christened the "conversation pit" by original designer and owner Sam Stephenson. The Dublin architect had invited the great and good from Ireland's public life to sit here for colourful parties and social events. Seen as something of a rebel in the swinging 60s his innovation and spirit are everywhere here. Time has been kind to the minimalist style. Staff are friendly and helpful, we were offered homemade cake and coffee on arrival after a walk from the city centre. Sleeping Matters A double room at Number 31 (Image: unknown) Each of the 22 rooms has its own sophisticated style and character summoning Art Deco, Classic Hollywood and the Jazz Age. Our elegant suite was decorated in a rich light green colour and there was plenty of room to find your own space. We spent a comfortable afternoon here before going out for dinner. Luxury bedding and a Super King-sized bed added to a relaxing night's sleep after travelling and walking around the city centre. Nice Touch Featured in the Michelin Guide to Ireland's best boutique hotels, it also offers a stunning garden. The path runs between the mews and the townhouse. I enjoyed a morning coffee near the bronze statue of an angel which was resplendent under sunlight, falling Cherry blossoms in Springtime and colourful rows of flowers. At night guests warm themselves with a seat near the fire pit and enjoy a nightcap in the tranquil surroundings. The gardens at Number 31 (Image: unknown) Food For Thought Delia's breakfast was a real highlight and she delivered the perfect Irish mammy welcome with a smile and a cooked fry-up. We sit at a table arranged like a traditional farmhouse. The food is sourced from local ingredients, I opted for the delicious Eggs Benedict which was followed by Delia's signature dish of baked cranberry and orange nut loaf. Her homemade granola served with yoghurt and fruit was also popular. Drink In The Sights For music fans, Windmill Lane Recording Studios is a popular attraction. It's perhaps closely associated with U2 and no fan of the Dublin four-piece will be disappointed but other classic records such as Kate Bush's Hounds of Love were partly recorded at the studios. I was given a detailed tour that featured stories about the resident ghost as well as former owner Van Morrison. Recent visits include The Edge and Bruce Springsteen. Right in the centre of Dublin is The Irish Rock 'n' Roll Museum Experience which even contains its own U2 room, the tour featured an international audience who enjoyed getting involved and asking questions. We were even invited to a live jam session. When there were no takers, a rendition of Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix from my school days came in handy. Getting There I flew with Ryanair from Edinburgh into Dublin, prices vary depending on when you book but can start as low as £14.99. A cab from the airport to the city centre is around €30. An Aircoach bus ticket from the airport costs approximately €12 for a return and stops close to the hotel. I also travelled around Dublin on the Do Dublin Hop-on Hop-off tour. Giant safari sculptures make their return to Norwich
A herd of sculptures is set to take over a city as part of a trail by a local charity. Break, which supports young people across the East of England who have been in care, will launch the 10-week GoGoSafari event in Norwich on 50 sculptures, including gorillas, rhinos, giraffes, lions and elephants are due to be placed across the city - and beyond - before some are auctioned off in October. Senior partnership and project manager Peter Marron said he hoped the event would be enjoyable for people as well as "raising much-needed funds". Break works with children and young people who are either in or have left care, providing opportunities to help them on their way to 2013, sculptures of gorillas, hares, dinosaurs and cows have been seen across Norfolk and artists were involved in the designs of this year's models, with businesses supporting the event. It has been organised in partnership with Wild in Art, the Zoological Society of East Anglia, Norwich BID and Chantry Place. Five of the largest animals will be located at the Millennium Plain, Norwich Cathedral, Tombland and London Street. As well as in Norwich, five sculptures are also due to be installed at other locations in Norfolk, including Holkham Hall and September 2022, the charity auctioned off 60 dinosaur and mammoth sculptures, which had been placed across Norfolk, and raised £427,000. Reel Recovery fishing retreat held in Norfolk for men with cancer
A group which aims to help men with cancer by teaching them fly-fishing is hosting its second weekend retreat in the UK. Reel Recovery started in the US in 2003 and says it has helped more than 4,700 men living with cancer. This weekend's event near Dereham, in Norfolk, will teach 12 men how to fly-fish while prompting conversations and offering a space for sharing their experiences of the organiser, Michael Sayers, said men were "notoriously bad" at talking about health and emotions and the fishing trip "really helps them to open up and think about how cancer has affected their lives and relationships and how they view their future". The retreat is free to participants and provides meals and accommodation at the location in North Elmham."Fly-fishing is basically like meditation in motion," said Mr Sayers."You're out there and you're literally immersed in nature or immersed in a river and you have the sound of the water flowing by and rustling the trees, no wifi, no interruptions and it's a simple, mindful, rhythmic act of casting a fly line."Reel Recovery ran its first retreat in the UK in Northumberland last year and it has worked with the Big C Cancer Charity and the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital to organise this one. Comedians Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse have fished in Norfolk with their BBC TV programme, Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing where they share personal experiences of life, and Mortimer's experience of heart problems, while fishing. Mr Sayers said the Reel Recovery activities were "cathartic" and offered men some escape as the weekend, a ceremony is held, where each man receives a fishing vest which has been passed down from each retreat. "We have fishing vests which go back 22 years from when Reel Recovery started this programme in the United States and we get every participant to sign and date it and write a message on it," he said."Some of them will be wearing vests that would have had 22 years of [being worn by] other guys with cancer."There's a real feeling of strength that comes from that, and brotherhood."
