
More frequent and faster buses for Hereford outlined in plan
Bus services in Herefordshire could be made more frequent and faster under new proposals.Among a raft of measures in Herefordshire Council's draft Local Transport Plan 2025-2041, it says there should be "bus priority or bus-only access on certain streets to make bus services faster and more reliable".It singles out Cantilupe Road, Gloucester Road and the High Street in Ross-on-Wye as spots where it will "tackle delays" caused by on-street parking.While the council would like to see half-hourly services between Hereford and all five market towns, it will prioritise Ross-on-Wye and Leominster, as they have "the largest population and anticipated new development".
It also wants bus times to match up better with the opening hours of leisure centres and social facilities, as well as events.The council also plans to make bus stops safer and more accessible, so has proposed putting in extra road crossings, cycle parking, lighting and CCTV around them, as well as providing real-time bus information and wi-fi at stops.A more integrated transport policy for the county could also mean more use of shared cars, which along with shared bikes could be provided at railway and bus stations, the council said.Local residents can give their views on the proposals online until 8 June.Philip Price, the council's cabinet member for Transport, said the plans paved "the way for a bright, sustainable future".The council does not operate bus services in the county, but partly funds about 10 companies to run them.Bus travel in the county is currently capped at £3 per journey, up from £2 last year.

Bus service changes for Leicestershire confirmed
New stops at railway stations and tourist attractions have been added to bus services in Leicestershire following a county council review. The council has announced that changes, which also include the introduction of free travel for a month on a bookable service called FoxConnect, will kick in from 14 follows a review of services partly funded by the government. The changes also aim to connect new developments in Loughborough, north west Leicestershire, Hinckley and Bosworth with towns, villages, other transport routes and destinations including Twycross Zoo and 1620s House. Councillor Charles Whitford, cabinet member for highways, transport and waste, said: "The new routes are developed with residents in mind. "Importantly, they're designed to reduce journey times, link rail stations and newer housing developments and unlock better links to towns and villages across the county."The changes include: Service 2 from Kinchbus will now run hourly with a re-route in Loughborough to cover part of the previous route 13, providing access to Great Central Service 5 will be re-routed to serve the Haddon Way/Grange Park estate and improve access to Loughborough's town centre, replacing the temporary Service north west Leicestershire, Hinckley and Bosworth, the former Service 7, now called LC12 will offer a fixed bus service during key commuter times to serve Witherley, Fenny Drayton, Atherstone, Ratcliffe Culey, Sibson, Carlton, Market Bosworth, Newton Burgoland and zones eight, nine and 11 will be introduced by LA Travel to serve the north west Leicestershire, Hinckley and Bosworth formerly Service 125, which runs from Coalville to Leicester has been re-designed to provide a "direct service with reduced journey times", the council county council has organised drop-in events for residents to find out about the changes in next event is at Coalville Library on Monday from 11:00 to 13:00 BST, before one is held at Hinckley Library on Friday between 11:00 and 13:00.

Tuk-tuk service helping people with mobility issues
Businesses in a village in Cornwall have said a new tuk-tuk shuttle service has helped people with mobility issues enjoy the service, called Tuk You There Dreckly, launched in April and takes people from Polperro car park to Polperro Pennington, who owns The Cottage Bed and Breakfast in Polperro, said it was "really handy", and helped people with less mobility to explore. She added: "This is really helping people to come back to visiting the village who have maybe stayed away because they've been worried about being able to get down and back up again." 'Makes a difference' Ms Pennington said the shuttle stopped outside her bed and breakfast."If you're fully mobile it makes no difference but lots of people aren't," she are three wheeled motorised taxis which are common in You There Dreckly owner Darren Sereika said: "Local people are loving it, kids are loving it, people waving all the time. And all with a smile on their face."He added: "It makes a difference for the entire village. "Hopefully long term it will be a huge impact and bring everything back to such a beautiful busy village that it is."On his busiest day Mr Sereika has clocked up 49km (30 miles) transporting people and can take up to six passengers at a time.A milk float and a horse and cart have been used in the past to take passengers down the hill to the harbour.

Runaway road and rail costs trigger investigation
An investigation into Britain's roads and railways has been launched as regulators attempt to tackle runaway costs and lengthy delays. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) unveiled details of the review on Thursday, which has been prompted by widespread frustration about the state of troubled infrastructure projects such as HS2. The main purpose of the inquiry will be to examine how cheaper infrastructure can be built, while also exploring the way in which public and private sectors work together. The study is expected to take 10 months, with initial findings published in November. While it will not give the CMA powers to intervene in the market, it will result in recommendations to the Government. It comes after a report published in 2023 by campaign group Britain Remade found that the UK was spending up to eight times more on road and railway upgrades than other European countries. The 2023 study said red tape in the planning sector was largely to blame for the overspend, while it also singled out the impact of Nimby campaigners. 'Appalling mess' Britain's ailing infrastructure was thrust into the spotlight once again this week when ministers admitted the HS2 high-speed rail project is facing fresh delays beyond its most recent target opening date of 2033. Heidi Alexander, the Transport Secretary, branded the project an 'appalling mess' after warnings in June last year that its costs could balloon to £66bn. This will make it one of the most expensive railway lines in the world, she added, despite a major scaling back of the project that saw planned routes to Manchester and Leeds scrapped. Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C – two major nuclear power plant projects – are also running significantly late and over budget. The CMA will not include HS2 in its study as the rail project has already been subject to multiple reviews. However, the watchdog said it will consider the full lifecycle of roads and railways, including their enhancement and maintenance. It comes after the National Infrastructure Commission estimated that public and private sector investment will need to increase by up to 50pc over the next decade to deliver more complex infrastructure. Road and railway projects account for between 70pc and 75pc of government spending on economic infrastructure, while the civil engineering sector as a whole added £23bn to the UK economy in 2023. 'Decade of national renewal' Sarah Cardell, CMA chief executive, said: 'There's no question that reliable, high-quality infrastructure is critical in accelerating economic growth. To achieve this, public authorities and the civil engineering sector must be able to work together to deliver projects on time, within budget and to high standards. 'This review is a crucial step in identifying barriers holding back the sector – supporting the drive to get Britain building and ensuring every penny spent is delivering value for taxpayers.' Details of the review have been announced after the Government published its 10-year infrastructure strategy, which earmarked £725bn in funding for maintenance and major projects over the next decade. Rachel Reeves, the Chancellor, said: 'Infrastructure is crucial to unlocking growth across the country, but for too long investment has been squeezed. Crumbling public buildings are a sign of the decay that has seeped into our everyday lives because of a total failure to plan and invest. 'We're not just fixing buildings – we're enhancing public services, improving lives and creating the conditions for sustainable economic growth in communities throughout the UK. 'This will deliver the decade of national renewal we promised Britain, and fulfil our Plan for Change goals to kickstart economic growth, and build an NHS fit for the future.'
