Shares of Sun TV Network tumbled over 5 per cent in intra-day trade on Friday before recovering most of the lost ground to end 1 per cent lower amid concerns over a rift between brothers Dayanidhi and Kalanithi Maran.
ADVERTISEMENT According to reports, Dayanidhi has sent a legal notice to his brother and several others, accusing them of "fraudulent practices" and "misgovernance" in taking control of Sun TV after their father Murasoli Maran's death in 2003.
The stock of Sun TV dropped 5.20 per cent to Rs 581.55 during the day on the BSE. Later, it ended at Rs 606.80, down 1.09 per cent.
On the NSE, shares of the firm tanked 5.25 per cent to Rs 580 during the day. The stock later ended at Rs 605.75 apiece, a decline of 1.04 per cent.
A day after reports emerged of former Union minister Dayanidhi Maran accusing his brother of "fraudulent practices" and "misgovernance", the elder sibling Kalanithi-run Sun TV on Friday said the division between the promoter family done 22 years back was in compliance with all legal obligations.
Defending its promoter Kalanithi, Sun TV Network in a regulatory filing said the agreements between the two brothers had been "duly vetted" by "intermediaries" concerned before the company's public issue.
ADVERTISEMENT The board of Sun TV Network is led by Kalanithi as Executive Director and Chairperson. Kalanithi, as a promoter, owns 75 per cent shareholding in Sun TV Network.
ADVERTISEMENT Sun TV Network said, "The alleged matter dates back to 22 years, when the company was a closely held private limited company". Defending the promoter, it further stated, "Statements allegedly made in the articles are incorrect, misleading, speculating, defamatory and not supported by facts or law".
ADVERTISEMENT "We wish to inform that all acts have been done in accordance with legal obligations and the same had been duly vetted by concerned intermediaries before the public issue of the company," it said.
Moreover, Sun TV Network also said the media reports claiming a rift between the promoter Maran brothers "does not have any bearing on the business of the company or its day-to-day functioning".
ADVERTISEMENT Sun TV Network also clarified that it is a "family matter of the promoter" and is "purely personal in nature".

Labelling ASEAN countries as China's ‘B-team' unwarranted, insulting: Congress

The Congress on Friday hit out at Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal for his remarks against the India-ASEAN trade agreements, signed under the UPA government, saying labelling these countries as 'B team of China' is 'irresponsible and insulting'. Speaking at the India Global Forum (IGF) session in London, Goyal said, 'There was a point of time 15 years ago when we were more focused on doing FTAs with countries who were our competitors. So if I am doing an ASEAN agreement, it really is silly because (that is) opening up my market to my competitors, many of whom have now become the B team of China.' 'So effectively and indirectly, I have opened up my market for goods that find their way from China into India,' Goyal had said. Sharma, a former Union Commerce Minister, Friday said in a statement, 'Piyush Goyal's statement terming the Trade agreement with ASEAN as silly and labelling these countries as B team of China is irresponsible and insulting.' He said India and ASEAN countries 'have been engaged in a multifaceted relationship for over three decades' which is 'mutually rewarding and important'. 'This is an integral part of the Look East policy to deepen and diversify India's relations with a region economically vibrant and of enormous geostrategic importance…' 'The Commerce Minister should be prioritising strengthening trade relations with partner countries and not insulting them while bending backwards to negotiate a suboptimal trade agreement with US on its terms,' he added.

Panbazar road overbridge to be ready by July: NFR

Guwahati: Construction of the Panbazar road overbridge (ROB), which began last year, is expected to be completed by July, Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) officials said. The bridge is likely to ease traffic congestion in the Paltan Bazar and Panbazar areas, two of the city's oldest cosmopolitan areas. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "As of now, concretisation work on the bridge's approaches is going on. But most of the work has been completed, including laying the foundational structures, significant fabrications, and placing the bow string girders. Advanced sub-soil strengthening through geo-cell technology has also been completed. The project is expected to be complete by July this year," said Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, chief public relations officer, NFR. The construction work of the ROB has not been progressing on a smooth note. The CPRO said the presence of the fire brigade station posed a challenge in the stacking of construction materials, limiting workspace efficiency. Approximately Rs 48 crore in cost, the project was undertaken by a Kolkata-based construction company to facilitate the smooth movement of the electric locomotives as part of the NFR's ongoing electrification process, where high-voltage lines have been installed. However, the old ROB, which was built in 1965, had turned into a 'dead wire zone'. The area under the bridge was a neutral point, and since it was not charged, it restricted the speed permanently to 15 km/h. As a result, locomotives approaching Guwahati railway station failed to maintain the required momentum, causing them to halt in that area. "Waterlogging also used to be a recurring challenge, especially during heavy rains, causing signal failures and disruptions. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now With the necessary adjustments to this project, the lifted track levels will prevent waterlogging, ensuring smooth operations even during monsoons," Sharma said. He added that the new ROB will aim to address the limitations of its predecessor while introducing significant enhancements. With a span of 60 meters, it will provide improved vertical and horizontal clearance. It will also feature a three-lane wide road replacing its two-lane limitations, which will increase its capacity to handle higher volumes of road traffic as well, thus ensuring a smoother transportation system for commuters.
