Filmmaker Mahesh Jirawala among victims of Ahmedabad plane crash, DNA confirms

India Today2 days ago

Days after the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad that killed over 270 people, the death of Gujarati filmmaker Mahesh Jirawala has been officially confirmed through DNA analysis. The filmmaker, who had been missing since the June 12 plane crash incident, was identified after DNA samples collected from his family matched one of the bodies recovered from the crash site.advertisementAccording to police and medical authorities, Mahesh was last traced to the vicinity of the crash site, with his mobile location placing him near the scene shortly before the accident.
Although the family was initially unwilling to accept that he had died in the fire caused by the crash, confirmation came when DNA testing matched their sample with a charred body found on-site.Further investigation revealed that a two-wheeler, recovered completely burnt from the crash site, belonged to Mahesh. This was verified using the chassis and engine numbers of the vehicle. The filmmaker's remains have now been handed over to the family.Mahesh's wife said police told her his phone was last traced 700 meters from the crash site and switched off just a minute before the flight took off."My husband called me at 1.14pm to tell me his meeting is over and that he is on his way home. However, when he did not return, I called up on his phone but it was switched off. After police was intimated, the last location of his mobile phone showed he was 700 metres away from the crash site," Hetal had told PTI.advertisement"His phone got switched off around 1:40pm (a minute after the ill-fated flight took off). His scooter and mobile phone are missing. All this is unusual since he would never use that route (as per the last location) to come home. We have submitted DNA samples to check if he was one of those killed on the ground due to the crash," she added. The June 12 crash of Air India Delhi-Ahmedabad-London flight claimed the lives of over 270 people, including both passengers and local residents.

Aircraft tail snag briefly halts crash site clean-up

Ahmedabad: During the clearance of the Air India Flight 171 crash site in Ahmedabad on Sunday, the aircraft's tail section got lodged in a tree near the Anti-Corruption Bureau office (ACB) in Shahibaug Dafnala. The tail was part of the wreckage being transported in a truck to the airport for further examination as part of an ongoing probe, said V N Yadav, ACP, G Division. Police authorities blocked the road from Shahibaug Dafnala to Camp Hanuman Mandir to allow emergency teams to intervene. Shortly after, police personnel, along with a few locals, arrived at the scene and extricated the tail by trimming a few branches. The truck later resumed its journey, and the road was reopened for traffic. Commuters were not inconvenienced for long as the entire operation was conducted swiftly. No injuries or damage to property were reported. The wreckage will be kept in a hangar for investigation, which is being conducted by multiple national and international agencies. On June 12, the London-bound aircraft crashed in Meghaninagar shortly after take-off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International airport in the city, killing 241 passengers on board. tnn

Bomb hoax by passenger delays flight at city airport

Vadodara: A 51-year-old man with a learning disability triggered panic at Vadodara airport on Sunday evening after falsely claiming that he had a bomb in his bag. The incident caused a major security scare and delayed an Air India flight to Delhi by more than 90 minutes, officials said. The man, who was travelling alone and scheduled to take a connecting flight to New York from Delhi, made the claim during a routine security check by CISF personnel. Initially, he stated he was carrying a bomb, but when questioned further, he began laughing and told officials he was "just joking." However, airport authorities followed standard protocol and initiated a full-scale emergency response. Multiple security and intelligence agencies — including the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Vadodara city police, Special Operations Group (SOG), Police Control Board (PCB), and state and central intelligence bureaus — were deployed to handle the situation. All passengers who had already boarded the Delhi-bound flight were deboarded, frisked, and their luggage thoroughly rechecked. The flight, originally scheduled to depart at 5:40pm, was cleared for take-off only around 7:00pm, after investigators confirmed there was no actual threat. "While checking his luggage, we found medical documents that confirmed his mental condition," said DCP Panna Momaya. "As per regulations, individuals with such medical conditions must be accompanied by a family member, relative, or guardian. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Since all his immediate family members are currently in the US, he has been handed over to a distant relative residing in the city," she added.
