Joint CBSA and OPP investigation leads to arrest and charges for drug importation and trafficking Français
OTTAWA, ON, May 23, 2025 /CNW/ - A 47-year-old was arrested and is facing drug related charges after a joint investigation involving the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).
On Thursday, May 8, 2025, the CBSA conducted a secondary inspection of a package from Italy arriving at the Ottawa International Airport. Testing determined the contents was heroin.
The CBSA requested assistance from the OPP Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU).
On Tuesday, May 20, 2025, the joint investigation resulted in the execution of a search warrant by CSCU members, as well as members of the OPP Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau and CBSA, at a residence on Red Castle Ride, in the Manotick area of Ottawa. One person was arrested the scene.
Harvinder Singh Malhi of Ottawa has been charged under the Controlled Drug and Substance Act with:
Import Schedule 1 substance
Possession of a Schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking
The accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Ottawa on June 24, 2025.

Man's mother is member of church where he opened fire outside before he was fatally shot, police say
WAYNE, Mich. (AP) — The man who opened fire outside a Michigan church filled with worshippers before he was struck by a vehicle and then fatally shot by security staff had attended services there a couple of times in the last year and his mother is a member, police said. The gunman, identified as Brian Anthony Browning, 31, did not have any previous contacts with local police or a criminal history, but may have been suffering a mental health crisis, the Wayne Police Department said in a news release. Churchgoers attending a Sunday morning service at CrossPointe Community Church in Wayne spotted the gunman driving recklessly and then saw him exit his car wearing a tactical vest and carrying a rifle and a handgun, police Chief Ryan Strong said at an evening news conference. The man began firing as he approached the church, striking one person in the leg. A parishioner driving a pickup truck hit the man and the church security team locked the front doors and exchanged gunfire with the man, police said. At least two staff members shot him, Strong said. About 150 people were inside the church at the time. 'We are grateful for the heroic actions of the church's staff members, who undoubtedly saved many lives and prevented a large-scale mass shooting,' the chief said. The shooting occurred in Wayne, a city of about 17,000 people located about 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of Detroit. One member of the security team was shot in the leg and was listed in stable condition at a hospital after undergoing surgery, the news release said. No one else was hurt. Police executing a search warrant at Browning's home in Romulus, about 5 miles (8 kilometers) south of Wayne, found additional rifles, several more handguns and a large amount of ammunition, the news release said. Police: Suspect shot and killed by a security guard after a shooting at a church in Michigan
WAYNE, Mich. (AP) — A gunman opened fire during a service at a suburban Detroit church on Sunday, wounding at least one person before a security guard killed him, police said. The incident happened at Crosspointe Community Church in Wayne, a city of about 17,000 people outside Detroit around 11 a.m., the church's pastor, Bobby Kelly Jr., told the Detroit News. Police said one person was shot in the leg. Kelly said a church member ran the shooter over with his truck, giving the security guard time to shoot him. The person who was shot in the leg was the security guard, the pastor told the newspaper. No one else was hurt, he said. About 150 people were attending the service, Kelly said. Messages The Associated Press left Sunday morning with the Wayne Police Department, on the church voicemail and on the church's Facebook page were not immediately returned.

Israel says the remains of 3 hostages have been recovered from Gaza
TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — The Israeli military says it has recovered the remains of three hostages held in the Gaza Strip. It identified them as Yonatan Samerano, 21; Ofra Keidar, 70; and Shay Levinson, 19. All three were killed during Hamas' Oct. 7, 2023, attack into Israel that ignited the ongoing war. The militant group is still holding 50 hostages, less than half of them believed to be alive. Kobi Samerano said in a Facebook post that his son's remains were returned on what would have been Yonatan's 23rd birthday. 'The campaign to return the hostages continues consistently and is happening alongside the campaign against Iran,' Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement. Hamas-led militants killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducted 251 people in the Oct. 7 attack. More than half the hostages have been returned in ceasefire agreements or other deals, eight have been rescued alive and Israeli forces have recovered dozens of bodies. Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed over 55,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, which has said that women and children make up more than half of the dead.
