Two workers hospitalised after collapse at Russian bauxite mine, authorities say
MOSCOW - Two workers were injured and taken to hospital after a collapse at a bauxite mine belonging to a unit of Russian metals producer Rusal in the Urals, the regional prosecutor's office said on Wednesday.
The incident occurred at a depth of 1,172 metres (3,845 feet). Authorities have begun a safety compliance inspection at the facility, prosecutors said.
Rusal subsidiary SUBR, which owns the Cheremukhovskaya-Glubokaya mine, said the incident happened when the wall of one of the mine workings collapsed. The miners were quickly brought to the surface, it said.
"The scene of the incident is being examined. Work at other levels of the mine is proceeding as planned," it said.
The mine is the second deepest in Russia and among the deepest in the world. REUTERS

Air India crash risks fuelling up to 30% jump in airline insurance premiums

Premium hikes of that scale would be larger than previous crashes, given the enormity of the Air India accident, the brokers said. PHOTO: REUTERS MUMBAI – Indian insurance policy sellers expect the cost of coverage for airlines to spike as much as 30 per cent after the deadliest aviation crash in more than a decade. Sajja Praveen Chowdary, director at Indian broker Policybazaar, expects premiums for hull, war-risk, and liability coverage to increase by 10 per cent to 30 per cent in the next renewal cycle. Rohit Boda, group managing director at broker Group, predicts a rise of 10 per cent to 25 per cent. Premium hikes of that scale would be larger than previous crashes, given the enormity of the Air India accident, the brokers said. The crash killed 241 on board and dozens on the ground when it smashed into a residential area in the city of Ahmedabad on June 12. Insurance claims for the Air India crash are expected in the realm of US$475 million (S$612 million), including those for the aircraft's hull and engine as well as additional liability for loss of life, Bloomberg News reported earlier. Air India's fleet is insured for about US$20 billion in total, with an annual premium near US$30 million, according to data from Policybazaar. 'A catastrophe of this scale will contribute to hardening of global rates,' said Chowdary, director at Policybazaar for Business. Globally, crashes accounted for the majority of the US$15 billion in aviation claims during the five year period ended 2024, according to a report by insurance giant Allianz. Growth in air travel, fuelled by Asia-Pacific and North America, was expected to drive premiums to more than US$8 billion, according to the report. The insurance premium increase would be for all airlines, said people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be identified discussing private matters. They added that the impact will be redistributed to airlines across the globe. The premium increase is expected to be large, and further loss of aircraft could drive premiums to a record, the people said. bloomberg Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Airlines weigh Middle East cancellations after US strikes in Iran strand thousands

Commercial airlines around the world on June 23 were weighing how long to suspend Middle East flights after the US struck Iran. PHOTO: EPA-EFE Follow our live coverage here. Commercial airlines around the world on June 2 3 were weighing how long to suspend Middle East flights after the US struck Iran. Singapore Airlines, one of the highest-profile in Asia, had called the situation 'fluid' on June 22 as it cancelled flights from Singapore to Dubai following a security assessment. The Middle East route has become more important for flights between Europe and Asia since Russian and Ukrainian airspace closed due to war, but flight tracking website FlightRadar24 showed empty space over Iran, Iraq, Syria and Israel. Air France KLM said on Sunday that it cancelled flights to and from Dubai and Riyadh on Sunday and Monday. British Airways, owned by IAG ICAG.L, also cancelled flights to and from Dubai and Doha for June 22. It was still reviewing the situation, it said in a statement on the evening of June 22, when asked about later flights. Missile and drone barrages in a growing number of conflict zones represent a high risk to airline traffic, and an organization that monitors flight risks, Safe Airspace, a website run by OpsGroup, warned on June 22 that US attacks on Iran's nuclear sites could heighten the threat to American operators in the region. In the days before the US strikes, American Airlines suspended flights to Qatar and United Airlines did the same with flights to Dubai. Airlines are also concerned about a potential spike in oil prices following the US attacks, which will increase the cost of jet fuel. Israel meanwhile is ramping up flights to help stranded travellers at home and abroad. The country's Airports Authority says that so-called rescue flights to the country would expand on June 23 with 24 a day, although each flight would be limited to 50 passengers. Israeli airline El Al on June 22 said it had received applications to leave the country from about 25,000 people in about a day. Two oil supertankers U-turn in Strait of Hormuz after US strikes

The tankers offer the first signs of a re-routing of oil ships following the US strikes. PHOTO: REUTERS Two oil supertankers U-turn in Strait of Hormuz after US strikes Follow our live coverage here. LONDON – Two supertankers both capable of hauling about 2 million barrels of crude U-turned in the Strait of Hormuz after US airstrikes on Iran raised the risk of a response that will ensnare commercial shipping in the region. The Coswisdom Lake and South Loyalty both entered the waterway and abruptly changed course on June 22, according to vessel tracking data compiled by Bloomberg. The two empty freighters then sailed south, away from the mouth of the Persian Gulf. Ships' electronics and signals have increasingly been jammed in the Persian Gulf since Israeli airstrikes on June 13, but the two vessels' arrivals – and subsequent turnarounds – have the hallmarks of normal tanker movements. Together, the tankers offer the first signs of a re-routing of oil ships following the US strikes. It's possible vessels may prefer to station themselves outside Hormuz if they expect a wait upon arrival at their loading port given the higher tensions. Oil tanker owners and traders are closely watching for signs that the escalation in the Middle East will affect vessel movements and flows. Earlier on June 22, Greece's shipping ministry issued a notification advising its ships to reassess movements through Hormuz and to instead shelter in safe ports until the situation calms. Benchmark tanker earnings were already up close to 90 per cent before the weekend's attacks. Freight derivatives appeared to surge late on June 22. bloomberg Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
