Remote Scottish beach with pristine pink sands named best spot to avoid crowds this summer

A remote Highland beach has been named one of the best UK spots to escape the summer crowds
With warm weather on the way, Scotland's beaches are expected to be packed this weekend as families and sunseekers head for the coast. But for those looking to avoid the crowds and discover something truly special, one remote Highland beach is offering an unforgettable escape.
Sandwood Bay, tucked away in the far northwest of Scotland near Kinlochbervie, has been named one of the best places in the UK to dodge the summer rush, Scottish Daily Express reports.

Travel experts Simply Sea Views singled it out as an ideal destination for those seeking peace, space and a wild, dramatic landscape.

The beach is only accessible on foot via a four-mile walk from the nearest car park at Blairmore.
The route cuts through moorland, lochans and rolling hills, and while it may require effort, the reward is a breathtaking scene of pink-tinged sands, towering cliffs and crashing Atlantic waves.
'It's utterly remote, with no facilities and no phone signal – just you, the sea, and the sky,' said Simply Sea Views. 'The reward for taking on the hike is a pristine stretch of pale sand and dramatic waves.'
Stretching for a mile and a half, Sandwood Bay has been described by Undiscovered Scotland as 'the most magnificent beach in the UK'.

It is also believed to be the country's most remote beach, and even, according to local legend, the site of a mermaid encounter.
The scene is pure drama. Behind the beach, towering sand dunes roll down into the still waters of Sandwood Loch. In front, the full force of the Atlantic Ocean crashes against the shore, with the iconic sea stack of Am Buachaille rising from the waves.

TripAdvisor reviews are also full of awe. 'Of course, summer sun brings out all the gorgeous colours,' wrote one visitor, 'but strong winds and raging seas show you nature in all her mighty power too.'
Another added: 'I couldn't believe how quiet and secluded it was, it's an absolutely beautiful beach!'

Today, Sandwood Bay remains a haven for wildlife. Seals and dolphins are often seen just offshore, further adding to its otherworldly charm.
While there are no cafés, shops or restaurants nearby, hungry walkers can stop at the Old School Restaurant and Rooms on the way back, a converted schoolhouse that served the local community from 1879 to 1970 and now offers hearty meals and warm hospitality.

For those wanting to stay longer, the nearby crofting community of Kinlochbervie offers a mix of guesthouses and glamping accommodation, with prices ranging from £90 to £150 per night.
The village is also home to a modern harbour and one of the largest fish-processing plants in the region.
With no phone signal, no crowds and no distractions, Sandwood Bay offers a rare kind of coastal escape, just sea, sky, and the raw beauty of the Scottish wilderness.

Councillors propose limit on Airbnb-style holiday lets in Scottish Highlands

Holiday lets would not be banned completely, but extra restrictions would be introduced. A control zone across the entire Highland region to limit Airbnb-style lets has been proposed as a way of tackling a shortage of homes in the area. The restrictions, which are already in place in a small part of the region, would not ban holiday lets completely - but would require operators to have planning permission as well as a short-term let licence. Michael Gregson and Duncan Macpherson, the local councillors who put forward the proposal, said the Highlands needed over 24,000 homes over the next 10 years. They added 7,011 short-term let licences had been granted across the region, but only four refused. They said the powers could be implemented where local demand called for them, reports the BBC. In a paper going out to next week's meeting of the full Highland Council, they said: "The private long-term rental market has shrunk disastrously: estate agents are withdrawing from letting out properties because of the shortage of properties available. "Even taking into account the efforts of Highland Council and the housing associations, there is a shortage of affordable housing." Council officials have said implementing the control status across the entire area would first require research, and could mean increased costs and workload for its planning department. The councillors explained the local authority should first ask the Scottish Government to revisit its original plan to have a policy for over-provision within short-term lets legislation. If this was not possible, they said approval for Highland control area status should be sought. Officials said in response both suggestions brought financial implications for the council, as well as potential challenges in extending the controls to the whole region. Highland Council's first control zone was approved in December 2023 and covers the areas of Badenoch and Strathspey. Councillors who supported it being implemented said it was needed because workers and local young people were having difficulties in finding affordable homes. However, the Association of Scotland's Self-Caterers (ASSC) said at the time targeting legitimate small businesses to address longstanding housing issues showed "a muddled sense of priorities". A law requiring operators to have a licence was enforced across Scotland in October 2023. However, the introduction of control policies in other areas has also not been without its challenges. The City of Edinburgh Council previously had to amend its licensing scheme following a court ruling. The entire local authority area was designated as Scotland's first short-term let control area in September 2022. However, the following August, parts of the policy were deemed to be unlawful. This applied in particular to presumptions against allowing whole tenement flats being used for short-term lets, unless their owners could prove exemption. Opponents accused the council of attempting to "shut down the sector". Another change to the policy came in February this year, when costs of "home sharing" were reduced and some requirements, such as legionella testing, for homes rented with a temporary exemption to the scheme were scrapped. It was hoped this would help to ease the accommodation crisis during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which continues to affect visiting performers and audiences. This May, councillors in Perth and Kinross voted to begin creating Scotland's third control area, despite previously rejecting the move.

Oasis fans offered tips to avoid travel chaos after gigs at Murrayfield Stadium

Liam Gallagher and Noel Gallagher will be at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh on the Oasis Live '25 Tour, with fans of acts like Taylor Swift offering advice to concertgoers Fans of Oasis have been offered advice from supporters of acts like Taylor Swift and Robbie Williams ahead of the band's reunion tour. It comes ahead of Liam Gallagher and Noel Gallagher playing gigs at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh. There's concern about getting home from the venue, which has a capacity of 67,000, in August. It comes following the experiences of Taylor's fans, who grappled with transport difficulties last June when the international singer dazzled crowds over three nights at the venue during her Era's Tour. ‌ Now, as the countdown to the Oasis gigs on August 8, 9 and 12 continues, fans of the band have been issued advice, as reported by the Daily Record. It includes them having been dissuaded from using Haymarket station – advice shared on a Reddit thread entitled: "People of Glasgow that are going to Oasis in Edinburgh, how are we getting home?'' ‌ The user sparked discussion about how people that live outside of Edinburgh are planning to get home. The post read: "As per title, are people chancing being able to get a train home? A coach? A million pound taxi? I'm really not sure of the best plan of action..." One Swiftie from Glasgow suggested: "Tip from when I was at Taylor Swift last year. Everyone will be trying to get a train from Haymarket, and it'll be f***ing mobbed." Advising instead: "Head to Waverly (either via tram or just walk) and get on the train there, it'll be significantly quieter, and you'll likely get a table seat as well, rather than being stuck standing." There's also been advice from someone who attended Robbie Williams' gig in Edinburgh, where he kicked off his BRIT POP world tour at the end of last month. Offering their advice, they said: "We were at Robbie Williams on Saturday and Citylink buses were pretty decent. "Drop you right outside the stadium and pick you up just a little bit further away be prepared for a bit of [a] wait though because it's busy. So the concert finished at 10:30 and we were on the bus by about 11:30." Get Oasis updates straight to your WhatsApp! I don't think it will be that bad trying to get home via public transport." There was however a word of caution about high demand to book ahead from someone else. They wrote: "Make sure to book the [CityLink] 900 and AIR buses ahead of time, they fill up quickly." Another person suggested similarly, writing in part of their response: "Citylink run all night. Happy Bus run private coach transfers from Buchanan to the event and back." ‌ A different user offered a more unconventional tip for catching a quieter bus: "Head to a club till you're completely knackered then head for a bus (they run 24/7 as previously mentioned). By that time most folk will have f***ed off already." Oasis fans are buzzing with anticipation as the band is set to rock Murrayfield Stadium with three gigs this summer on August 8, 9 and 12. The much-awaited reunion tour marks the first time the Gallagher brothers will share the stage in 16 years, with the opening show set to take place in Cardiff on July 4.

Football manager takes job at Airport while on gardening leave after sacking

Swansea City axed Luke Williams back in February and the former manager has decided not to rest on his laurels and has got himself a job working at Bristol airport Former Swansea boss Luke Williams is now working at Bristol airport after a picture of him in a high vis jacket went viral. The 44-year-old was place on gardening leave in February this year and has now found himself work in a very different environment. Williams has worked at Swindon and Notts County in the past and it was his work with the latter that caught the attention of those in Wales. He led Notts County to promotion from the National League via the play-offs and established them in League Two. ‌ His brand of football earned particular plaudits and when he left Meadow Lane his side were the highest scorers in the Football League. However his stint at Swansea would last just over a year before he was shown the door. ‌ Seven defeats in the space of nine games eventually saw the Swansea hierarchy opt for a change earlier this year and Williams was given the boot. Despite receiving a likely pay-off from the Championship outfit the 44-year-old has been keen to remain busy. As a result he's take a job helping disabled and limited-mobility passengers around the Bristol Airport terminal. He started the gig two weeks ago. A photo of the ex-Swansea boss has done the rounds with Williams wearing his yellow vest uniform and a lanyard as he comes out of the lift in Bristol, which is the eighth busiest airport in the UK. The former Notts County boss has never been scared of hard work and has revealed that, in order to fund his early coaching career, he loaded lorries for BHS and drove minibuses to and from nightclubs and airports. He previously told the Guardian when discussing his work ethic: "Sometimes I would work 20 hours off the bat, get three or four hours' kip, back to work. In my opinion motivation in life is everything. 'The realisation in my late-teens that life is going to be a monumental struggle for me, that life was about to become very tough and the world would become very hostile for somebody with no qualifications, no contacts, working class … that desire to feed myself and look after myself kicked in. "I realised that I was capable of tolerating almost anything, providing that I would be able to have a roof over my head and something to eat. That is how the motivation began. I don't think I've really moved away from that. I still feel as insecure in that way as I ever did.' Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
