TN court sentences former excise officer, wife in 2006 disproportionate assets case
TIRUNELVELI: A special court handling cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act on Tuesday sentenced a retired deputy excise officer to eight years of imprisonment and his wife to four years for demanding Rs 25,000 from the MD of a private company in 2006 and amassing wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income.
G Jayabalan (74), former deputy excise officer of Nanguneri taluk, was convicted in both corruption and disproportionate assets (DA) cases, while his wife J Gomathi Jayam was found guilty in the latter case. Special Judge R Subbiah ordered Jayabalan to undergo the two terms concurrently.
According to the prosecution, Jayabalan demanded Rs 25,000 from the managing director of a private firm operating at Thalapathi Samuthiram for revising the firm's tax assessment. Acting on a complaint filed by the MD V Ashok Kumar, the DVAC laid a trap and arrested Jayabalan.
Subsequently, searches were conducted at Jayabalan's residence and officers found the couple had amassed assets disproportionate to his known source of income. For this, a separate case was filed against the couple.
After a prolonged trial, the court on Tuesday sentenced Jayabalan and also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 in the bribe case. In the DA case, besides the jail term, Jayabalan was penalised Rs 50,000 and Gomathi Rs 10,000. The couple has been lodged in Palayamkottai Central Prison.

Gangster wanted for couple's murder killed in Firozabad police encounter

Sharing details about Khan's criminal record, Dixit further added that he was wanted in as many as five cases of murder, loot, and attempt to murder. Khan used to target elderly people, and he was currently living in Agra. He would travel from Agra to commit the crimes, police said, adding that he was identified after monitoring footage from 200 CCTV cameras. DIG Agra had announced a reward of Rs 50,000, and the SSP had announced a reward of Rs 25,000 for Raju Khan's arrest. After the incident, an illegal .32-bore firearm, eight live bullets, and 12 bullet shells were recovered from his possession, police said. As per Uttar Pradesh Police data, in the last eight years, the state reported 14,741 encounters, leading to the arrest of 30,293 criminals, while 234 criminals were gunned down.

Rs 50 lakh ganja seized in Hyderabad: 4 held including railway employee; NDPS warrants pending
HYDERABAD: The special operations team (SOT) of LB Nagar, in coordination with Hayathnagar police, busted an interstate ganja smuggling racket and arrested four peddlers, including a railway employee from Maharashtra. The arrested were identified as Vikas Baban Salve (30), Ranganath Yurajn Sadve (36), Sagar Gajanan Khandebharad (29) - a central railway employee - and Amol Narayan Borde (26). Officials seized 166 kg of the contraband worth Rs 50 lakh, four mobile phones and Rs 6,200 cash from their possession. Based on a tip-off, officials set up a checkpoint near Dhananjaya function hall in Hayathnagar and intercepted a car. During the search of the vehicle, the officials found 20 sacks of dry ganja weighing 166 kg. Investigators said they procured ganja from one Maik alias Rahul alias Dass and planned to transport it to Maharashtra via Hyderabad. Salve and Sadve have NDPS cases registered against them in Alair and Bhadrachalam police stations. Non-bailable warrants are pending against them.

3 drug peddlers held at Hyderabad; MDMA, OG Kush worth Rs 1.75 lakh seized
