Atlanta Braves and former Husker pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach throws first complete game
A former Husker threw his first career complete game at the Major League level. Spencer Schwellenbach went the distance in the Atlanta Braves' 6-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. Schwellenbach gave up five hits and two runs while striking out nine in the win.
Schwellenbach played for Nebraska from 2019 to 2021. In 2021, he was the Big Ten Player of the Year and the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year.
That season, he hit .284 with a .403 on-base percentage, six home runs, and 40 RBIs. He posted a 3-1 record, ten saves, and a 0.57 ERA in 18 appearances.
The Braves took the Michigan native with the 59th overall pick in the second round. He missed the 2022 season while recovering from Tommy John Surgery.
Schwellenbach has a career major league record of 13-11 with a 3.25 ERA and 198 strikeouts. This season, he is 5-4 with a 3.11 ERA with 84 strikeouts.

Loaded Dodgers Need Reinforcements; Does Cardinals Pitcher Fit Their Plan?
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Los Angeles Dodgers are one of the better teams in baseball despite struggling with injuries as much as anybody. Their pitching staff has been especially destroyed by arm injuries. With that in mind, the talented Dodgers are going to need to make a few trades this season if they want to stay atop the National League West. Colin Keane of Sports Illustrated recently suggested the Dodgers could pursue a trade for St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Steven Matz this season. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - MARCH 31: A detailed view of Los Angeles Dodgers hats and gloves during the game against the Atlanta Braves at Dodger Stadium on March 31, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - MARCH 31: A detailed view of Los Angeles Dodgers hats and gloves during the game against the Atlanta Braves at Dodger Stadium on March 31, 2025 in Los Angeles, California."The Los Angeles Dodgers are eyeing another title and will be looking to add at the trade deadline," Keane wrote. "With a depleted pitching staff due to injuries, the Dodgers must be scouring the market for versatile arms to bolster their bullpen. "The Cardinals, aiming to reduce payroll and invest in youth, might be enticed by a Dodgers prospect package. There will be multiple suitors for Matz if and when he hits the trade block, but the Dodgers have a way of presenting the best offer and outbidding the competition. Keep an eye on St. Louis and Los Angeles as trade partners between now and July 31." Matz has looked good this season, but he's gotten lit up his last two times out. The Dodgers are desperate for pitchers, but they might not be desperate enough to go after Matz. While his ERA looks solid this year, there are plenty of better options on the market for Los Angeles to pursue. It would be more realistic to link the Dodgers to a star like Ryan Helsley of the Cardinals rather than a streaky lefty like Matz. Braves' $65 Million Superstar Mentioned As Trade Candidate In Recent Report
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Atlanta Braves have been one of the more disappointing teams in baseball this season. They began the year with World Series expectations, but now look like a postseason afterthought. As a result of the struggles, the Braves could turn into aggressive sellers at the trade deadline next month. It's unclear whether general manager Alex Anthopoulos is going to sell, but it might make a lot of sense. Thomas Harrigan recently suggested the Braves could use slugger Marcell Ozuna as a trade chip ahead of the trade deadline. MIAMI, FLORIDA - JUNE 21: Drake Baldwin #30 of the Atlanta Braves celebrates with Marcell Ozuna #20 after hitting a three-run home run against the Miami Marlins during the ninth inning at loanDepot park on... MIAMI, FLORIDA - JUNE 21: Drake Baldwin #30 of the Atlanta Braves celebrates with Marcell Ozuna #20 after hitting a three-run home run against the Miami Marlins during the ninth inning at loanDepot park on June 21, 2025 in Miami, Florida. More"Anthopoulos has made it clear that controllable assets like Sale, who has a 2026 club option, aren't going anywhere," Harrigan wrote. "But if he's forced to reassess the club's Deadline approach, we could see Atlanta trade away its pending free agents. Ozuna is by far the best player on that short list, which also includes relievers Raisel Iglesias and Rafael Montero and outfielder Alex Verdugo. "While Ozuna's power numbers have dropped off in 2025, he's still reaching base at a .379 clip. He's also not far removed from producing 79 homers and a .552 slugging percentage across 2023-24, making him an appealing middle-of-the-order bat for contending teams in need of offensive reinforcements." Trading Ozuna makes more than enough sense for the Braves. With his contract expiring at the end of the year, it seems unlikely the Braves will pay the money to re-sign him. With that in mind, it seems like the rest of the season will be Ozuna's last games with the Braves. Trading him would net the Braves a few solid prospects in return rather than losing him in free agency for nothing. If Atlanta is open to selling, trading Ozuna makes more sense than anything.
