Hudson Yards could get 4,000 affordable housing units in place of that failed casino

The dice are off the table: Related Companies and Wynn Resorts have officially folded on their controversial Hudson Yards casino bid, clearing the way for a massive housing development that could reshape Manhattan's West Side.
Originally pitched as 'Hudson Yards West,' the $12 billion proposal called for three new towers, including a Wynn-run casino, hotel, and 80-story residential skyscraper. But after fierce opposition from elected officials, community boards, and preservation groups like Friends of the High Line, Wynn bailed on the gaming license, and Related pivoted hard.
Instead of slot machines and high rollers, the site will now feature 4,000 new apartments, including 400 affordable units, along with a sprawling 6.6-acre park dubbed 'Hudson Green.' The open space, which would rival Bryant Park in scale, promises lawns, gardens and playgrounds stretching from West 30th to 33rd Streets, west of 11th Avenue.
This casino proposal did not meet the high bar of community support that such a consequential project demands,' said Councilmember Erik Bottcher, who brokered the new deal and confirmed the casino was dead, in a statement. 'I have always said that any development of this scale must put the needs of New Yorkers first—and that means housing.'
While the original proposal only included 324 affordable units, the revised plan bumps that number up and replaces a planned 1,400-foot office tower with two residential buildings. A new office tower, possibly with hotel space, will rise where the casino was once slated.
Alan van Capelle, executive director of Friends of the High Line, previously among the project's loudest critics, offered cautious support: 'The latest plans appear to address many of our concerns. However, the devil is in the details.'
A zoning vote is set for Thursday, and full Council approval is expected on May 28. If passed, the development could be shovel-ready by 2026, assuming no further delays in platform construction over the 13-acre active rail yard.

A famous New York landmark was overrun with pigeons this week. The Big Apple is known for a lot of great things – the Empire State Building, world-class entertainment and famous faces. But one crucial piece of New York is often overlooked: the humble pigeon. The bird has gotten a lot more attention in recent months, thanks to a new statue installed at New York's High Line. The sculpture, a 17-foot-tall pigeon dubbed 'Dinosaur' by Ivan Argote, has brought pigeon lovers around the world to 30th Street and 10th Avenue. Cashing in on this pigeon-mania, the High Line decided to hold a pigeon pageant on National Pigeon Appreciation Day. Dozens of New Yorkers showed up in full costume, feathers and all, to compete for the crown prize. 13-year-old Athena told the New York Times pigeons were beautiful and fun to learn about: 'What's not to love?' A small pigeon in a red bow tie, along with dozens of participants and eager onlookers, took part in Pigeon Fest last Saturday. Contestants were judged by ornithologists on their impressions of pigeons – some even threw bread and attempted to peck at it. Categories included 'plumage', 'strut' and 'coo'. One contestant, dubbed 'Carrie Beakshaw' (a play on Sex And The City's Carrie Bradshaw) performed a monologue. But the crown was given to Miriam Abrahams, a volunteer at the Wild Bird Fund, which has thousands of pigeons they take care of. Her costume was incredibly lifelike, and she said she took a month to make it, even laying an egg during her performance. The bizarre festival is said to be a one-off, as the statue which brought everyone together will only be on display until next spring. But artist Argote said: 'The pigeon is an icon, somehow, of the margins, so it attracts a lot of people who are either involved with pigeons literally or feel represented by its complexity. 'It goes way beyond the work. As a sculptor and as an artist, you try to create something, but as soon as it gets into the community, it becomes more meaningful.' More Trending The love for pigeons isn't contained to just New York – in Cardiff, a dad who saved a pigeon from drowning welcomed the bird into his family and takes him for walks on a leash. Philip Weston-Thomas was on a walk around Roath Park Lake in Cardiff with his wife Rebecca and 14-year-old daughter one January when his daughter spotted the bird struggling in the freezing water. Philip jumped into action and scooped up the pigeon, which was freezing, shaking and 'on its last legs'. The family took the bird, whom they named Bobbi, home with them and nursed him back to health. Royal Ascot 2025 jockey flies 10.5k miles for ‘one of top moments of my career'

Two-time Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Mark Zahra rode his first royal meeting winner on his debut at the meeting when Docklands won a photo-finish for the Queen Anne Stakes One of the stars of the saddle from Australia flew 10,500 miles to realise 'one of the top moments of my career' on his Royal Ascot debut. The Harry Eustace-trained Docklands finished second in the Queen Anne Stakes 12 months ago when ridden by Hayley Turner. Turner retired from the saddle this year after announcing she was pregnant, leaving the ride on the five-year-old, owned by Aussie-run syndicate OTI Racing, vacant. Richard Kingscote rode Docklands to two defeats this year but connections booked two-time Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Mark Zahra for the Queen Anne Stakes, even though he had never ridden at the meeting before. ‌ Docklands, last away from the stalls, made his move on the far side of the group and battled it out with favourite Rosallion to edge a photo-finish by a nose, scoring at odds of 14-1, despite Zahra losing his whip in the closing stages. ‌ 'Everyone kept scaring me about the whip rules, I thought it was easier to throw it away at the 200m,' said the jockey. 'It was a very slow, slow speed. I crept as much as I could, got room at the right time, he burst through and kept responding. It was such a tough effort. 'What an amazing feeling. The build-up was amazing and the crowd is here. It's one of the top moments of my career for sure.' Harry Eustace, who took over the Newmarket yard of his Royal Ascot-winning father James when he started training, said: 'This is pretty sweet. 'It was tough watching. A photo is tough. If ever there was a track where you need a horse as a specialist, it's here because it's the best racing. 'I can't thank Terry Henderson and OTI enough. They got offered a huge amount of money after he won the Britannia here. They wanted to enjoy a good racehorse and roll the dice. Thankfully it's paid off.' Richard Hannon, who trained Rosallion to win the St James's Palace Stakes last year, was gutted to miss out with the 5-2 favourite. 'He's still a top class miler. I thought he had it there. He did everything but win and you can't ask for much more than that. It hurts, but so it should. He's beaten an awful lot of champions, hit the front, got done, but no one died.'
