UCI to trial gear restrictions to combat dangerous speeds

LONDON - A trial to restrict gear ratios and slow down professional cyclists will be conducted later this year, cycling's world governing body the UCI confirmed on Friday.
"A test to limit the maximum gear ratio -- approved by all families -- will be carried out during a stage race in the second half of the 2025 season," a statement read.
"The maximum gear ratio limitation aims to limit the speed reached in competition. It has been proven that the very high speeds reached by riders today are a risk factor for safety."
Under the trial, the maximum gear ratio will be a 54-tooth chain ring with an 11-tooth sprocket. Many teams currently use a 54-10 gear ratio which, allied to the huge power of top-level riders, can result in extremely high speeds.
Other safety features recommended by SafeR, the organisation dedicated to improving safety in men's and women's professional road cycling, include a minimum handlebar width of 400mm.
The rule will come into force on January 1, 2026 in road and cyclo-cross events with a mass start. REUTERS

Chelsea next face Esperance Sportive de Tunis on Wednesday. Jackson was sent off against Newcastle in a Premier League game last month for a similar challenge. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said: "It's a little bit of a bad moment for Nico in this kind of things. Unfortunately now he will be out for a while, the time that we are here." Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella said that Jackson had apologised to his team mates after the game. "He's very sad," Cucurella said. Crusaders edge Chiefs to win another Super Rugby title
The Canterbury Crusaders edged the Waikato Chiefs 16-12 in an intense Super Rugby Pacific final in Christchurch on Saturday to claim a 15th title in 30 years of the Southern Hemisphere competition. Portuguese Nuno, who previously managed Wolverhampton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur, joined Forest in December 2023 and helped the team avoid relegation before guiding them to a seventh-place finish in 2024-25, their best top-flight campaign in three decades. Forest narrowly missed out on a Champions League spot as they finished a point below fifth-placed Newcastle United, settling for a place in the Conference League's playoff round. "I am delighted to be able to continue our journey at this fantastic football club," Nuno said in a statement after signing the new three-year deal.
