Heartbreaking details surrounding the frantic search for Pinelands businessman, Previn Pillay, have emerged in the Western Cape High Court as the trio of alleged killers pleaded not guilty.
Nearly five years after the horrific murder of the young businessman who was decapitated and his mutilated corpse placed in a suitcase and set light, his alleged killers have pleaded not guilty as his father took the witness stand on Tuesday.
The 29-year-old man from Pinelands was last seen on December 23, 2020, leaving his home in Pinelands in his white Toyota Hilux bakkie.
The bumper of the vehicle was later found in Sunbird Park, but the bakkie was never recovered.
A week later police were called to Hazendal train station in Athlone where a mutilated body was found in a suitcase.
At the time, staff at the station saw a man dragging a large travel suitcase to the subway.
They saw the suspect setting the bag alight, it started smoking, and they rushed over to put out the fire as the suspect ran away.
Police later busted Riefaat Loofer, Glenville Jansen and Franklin van Niekerk.
Standing in the dock on Tuesday, the trio pleaded not guilty and exercised their right to remain silent offering no plea explanation.
Dad, Dennis Pillay, told the court that while the family lived in Pinelands, his son who had completed a BSc in Biodiversity at UWC lived on a separate property on his own but would frequent his family home.

He explained in the days following Previn's disappearance, he had messaged his son to return tools he had borrowed but received no response.
Several days later Previn's mother sent him a text saying she was making his favourite meal, beans and rotis, but he never pitched and this is when the search began.
The father explained that after opening a missing persons case they requested a tracking report of his vehicle, which showed on December 23 he had travelled to Sea Point where he had planned to open a coffee shop.
The father said as the weeks went by they appointed a private investigator to help them search and even forked out R10 000 after being informed that their son was being held captive in Elsies River.

NPA regional spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said that Thabo Gift Magwatane, 33, was handed the hefty sentence by the Mothibistad Regional Court this week for a string of serious offences, including rape, kidnapping, attempted murder and housebreaking. The charges relate to a night of terror in February 2022 in Dithakong village, where two matric learners, aged 17 and 18, were targeted in their residence. Magwatane and three accomplices reportedly forced their way into the house, cut the power, and demanded money and phones. After taking R100 and two cellphones, the attackers escalated their cruelty - forcing the girls to strip, blindfolding them, and leading them out into the veld wearing only sandals. There, the girls were subjected to repeated rape by more than one of the attackers. Their ordeal worsened when they were stabbed multiple times in what appeared to be an attempt to kill them. One girl was stabbed again after briefly regaining consciousness - only pretending to be dead saved her life. 'After the [sexual] assaults, one perpetrator ordered another to stab the victims, who were attacked repeatedly across their upper bodies. As they collapsed, their blindfolds were removed, and the perpetrators fled. Next Stay Close ✕ During this second attack, a cellphone alarm went off - allowing one of the victims, who was feigning death, to catch a glimpse of one of her attackers as he tried to switch it off. She recognised him as her cousin's boyfriend - Magwatane. After the attackers fled, the two survivors lay motionless in the veld for nearly half an hour before mustering the strength to help each other find assistance. Turned away at one home, they pressed on to another, where residents took them in, gave them blankets, and contacted their parents. Both girls were later admitted to the ICU, where they spent three weeks undergoing reconstructive surgery and recovering from their extensive injuries. Magwatane evaded capture for nearly two years before he was finally arrested in Rustenburg in early 2024. He faced multiple charges, including housebreaking with intent to steal and theft, as well as the kidnapping and rape of the 18-year-old victim. He was also charged with kidnapping, rape, and attempted murder of the 17-year-old. A second suspect, 25-year-old Obakeng Mosesane, remains in custody, with his trial scheduled for July 2, 2025. The two cases were separated after Magwatane absconded during the initial proceedings. Trauma, survival, and a fight for justice With Magwatane finally in the dock, the court proceedings laid bare the full horror of the crimes. 'Regional court prosecutor Bernice Bronkhorst-Oor presented a compelling case, supported by victim impact statements compiled with court preparation officer Beauty Moreeng. These statements detailed the survivors' profound physical and emotional trauma, including their ongoing fear and loss of safety in their own homes. Bronkhorst-Oor argued that the brutality of the crimes and their lasting impact far outweighed Magwatane's circumstances. The Kuruman Hospital Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC) played a pivotal role, providing psychosocial support and preparing the survivors for court,' said Senokoatsane. The prosecution maintained that there were no substantial or compelling reasons to warrant anything less than the mandatory life sentences for the rape charges. The magistrate concurred, describing the victims' survival as 'by God's grace' and labelling Magwatane a 'dangerous individual' who should be permanently removed from society. Magwatane was sentenced to five years for housebreaking and theft, 10 years each for two counts of kidnapping, and two life terms for the rapes. He also received 10 years each for two counts of attempted murder. All sentences will run concurrently. In addition, he was declared unfit to possess a firearm and placed on the National Register for Sex Offenders - further measures to safeguard the public. Senokoatsane said the NPA praised both young women for their courage and determination throughout the trial process. This outcome sends a powerful message: the NPA will relentlessly pursue justice for GBV survivors, ensuring perpetrators face the full might of the law. The expansion of TCCs from 55 in 2020/21 to 66 today reflects the NPA's commitment to providing comprehensive support to victims of sexual violence, he added. Senokoatsane further urged the public to report all gender-based violence and support survivors in seeking help 'The NPA urges communities to stand against GBV by reporting crimes promptly and supporting survivors through TCCs, which offer medical, psychological, and legal assistance. The survivors' persistence in seeking help, despite initial rejection, and their parents' swift response highlight the critical role of collective action. 'The NPA calls for increased vigilance to protect learners and vulnerable populations, fostering a South Africa where everyone can live free from violence and fear.' Cape Argus

Tragic Chatsworth crash claims life of man in fiery vehicle blaze
A man died in a crash on the M1 Higginson Highway on Saturday. Image: ALS Paramedics / Facebook A man believed to be in his forties tragically lost his life in a horrific crash on the M1 Higginson Highway Eastbound, just before the Havenside robots in Chatsworth, on Saturday evening. ALS Paramedics reported that the incident occurred just before 6pm. Multiple ambulances and advanced life support teams responded to the scene. 'Initial reports were that a vehicle had somehow lost control and collided with a tree before the vehicle burst into flames,' ALS Paramedics Garrith Jamieson said. On arrival, paramedics found that the vehicle was already on fire, and the eThekwini Fire Department was actively working to extinguish the blaze. 'The driver, believed to be the only occupant in the vehicle, unfortunately, was unable to get out of the vehicle in time and passed away on the scene,' the paramedics said. Divisional Commander Nkulumo Dube of eThekwini Municipality Fire & Emergency Services confirmed that a fire engine was dispatched just before 6pm on Saturday to attend to the crash, where firefighters found a bakkie engulfed in flames after colliding with trees. Confronting racism in our schools
The latest incident of alleged racism at Bryandale Primary School in Bryanston is yet another painful reminder that South African schools still have a long way to go before genuine transformation and inclusion are achieved. It is alleged that an Indian learner told two Black students, 'You stupid Black people are so predictable.' Such language is deeply offensive, dehumanising, and has no place in any learning environment. This incident must be treated with the seriousness it demands, not as a 'playground misunderstanding,' but as a reflection of wider issues of racism and marginalisation that persist in our schools. While many public and private schools proudly promote values of diversity and transformation in their mission statements, these values must go beyond lip service. Transformation is not a passive hope; it requires active, ongoing engagement and institutional introspection. Schools play a critical role in redressing the deep inequalities and marginalisation embedded in our society. They must be proactive in creating safe and affirming environments for all children, not only through symbolic gestures but through deliberate action, anti-racism training, and clear accountability mechanisms. The incident at Bryandale is not isolated. Just two days ago, a Grade 8 learner at De La Salle Holy Cross College was reportedly told, 'You don't belong… go home, you (K-word).' In 2024, Pretoria High School for Girls made headlines after racist WhatsApp messages targeted Black pupils. That same year, Jeppe High School for Girls in Johannesburg came under fire when Black pupils were removed from class for wearing coloured braids, while white pupils with dyed hair faced no repercussions. These are not isolated "bad apples." They reflect systemic failures that schools must urgently address. We call on school governing bodies, education departments, and communities to treat these incidents with the seriousness they deserve. Silence or delay enables racism to fester. We must demand not only awareness but transformation that is measurable, monitored, and real.
