A Sacramento, California, woman was concerned that her family wouldn't accept her sexuality, but what happened next took her by surprise.
Dipika Dutt (@itsnotpika) who was born in Fiji, posted a clip on TikTok with the text overlay: "What if my Indian family doesn't accept me being gay."
The clip then cuts to a heartwarming scene with Dutt's girlfriend, Mary, sitting next to her grandmother, who feeds Mary a bite of food, while smiling and laughing together.

"I never thought I would find someone that I can bring home to my family, but I knew when I did do it that they would be the one," the 27-year-old told Newsweek. "It makes me overwhelmingly happy that they love her so much—even more than me sometimes. I'm glad they gave her a chance."
Telling her family she was gay wasn't easy—her mom and sister were the first to know. "They were more shocked than anything," Dutt told Newsweek. "When it came to my brothers, it was really awkward. One day, I just came over to my brother's house with [Mary] and everyone was really quiet."
Thankfully, the silence didn't last long. Despite Dutt's fears—especially considering she was the first openly gay person in her Indian family—acceptance came more quickly than she ever expected.
"I expected it to be very bad but, honestly, once they met my partner, they all fell in love with her and accepted it very quickly," Dutt said. "Even my grandma, she was in shock, but once the shock wore off, she was so happy for me. It made me realize, if someone loves you, all they want is for you to be happy, and that's exactly what my family did."
Dutt's clip has been viewed over 742,000 times and received hundreds of comments from other users; they were overjoyed for the couple who have been together for almost six years.
"I love this for you guys," one user wrote.
"OMG [oh my God] the genuine joy in your grandmother's face," another posted.
The clip also sparked some skepticism. "A lot of people actually don't believe that my grandma thinks that's my [girlfriend]," Dutt told Newsweek. "They think that my grandma assumes she's just a friend—probably because, [in] Indian culture, it's very hard to come out to your elders."
Dutt has "come out" to every member of her family, and, now, Mary isn't just accepted—she is a beloved member of the family.
"If I come to a family event without Mary, they always ask where she is, and they blow up her phone saying they miss her," Dutt said. "I love sharing things like this because I'm so proud of my family."

Barely half of this generation has seen ‘Jaws,' as Spielberg classic celebrates 50 years

Their cinema knowledge bites! Barely half of Gen Z has seen the original summer blockbuster 'Jaws' compared to nearly 90% of people who came of age when the classic flick hit the silver screen. Steven Spielberg's pulse-pounding shark thriller — which first struck fear into the hearts of beachgoers exactly 50 years ago Friday — has only been viewed by 53% of 18- to 29-year-olds, according to a jaw-dropping new Gallup poll. By contrast, 88% of people over 65 years old have sunk their teeth into the flick, which held the No. 1 box office spot for 14 weeks and was the first film ever to rake in $100 million. 3 Barely half of Gen Z has seen the movie 'Jaws', according to a new poll. AP Pollsters cited no specific reason for why the generation that brought you the word 'cringe,' Crocs-as-fashion and TikTok activism wasn't hip to the movie — but its 2 hour, 10 minute running time might be a hint. Overall, 91% of people ages 50 to 64 and 78% of 30-to-49-year-olds reported seeing the spine-tingling flick, which centers on a massive man-eater that unleashes chaos on Long Island beach town. When the movie was released on June 20, 1975, it made giant waves in the US with viewers saying it scared them away from the water and increased their fear of sharks. The film was such a hit with young people at the time, a whopping 40% of 18-to-29-year-olds said they'd seen it by the end of summer 1975, according to a Gallup poll taken that year. 3 A total of 78% of Americans reported seeing 'Jaws' as of May 2025. AP At the time, 18% of viewers called it 'the most frightening movie' they had ever seen and 35% said the movie increased their fear of swimming in the ocean, according to the poll. 3 The classic movie stoked fears about sharks and swimming in the ocean. AP The more recent poll, conducted in May ahead of the movie's anniversary, notes a total of 78% of all US adults have seen 'Jaws.' It's ultimately not clear if a 53% viewership among Gen Z adults is high or low for a 50-year-old film without more cinema data to compare it to, pollsters said.

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors The red band trailer for "The Toxic Avenger" reboot is here and it gives us our best look yet at Peter Dinklage as Toxie, the eponymous hero. It also delivers plenty of dark laughs and gore. You can watch the trailer below. Read More: Ryan Reynolds' 'Dragon's Lair' Netflix Movie Recruits 'Muppets' Director The official synopsis for "The Toxic Avenger" reads, "When a downtrodden janitor, Winston Gooze, is exposed to a catastrophic toxic accident, he's transformed into a new kind of hero: The Toxic Avenger." "Now, Toxie must rise from outcast to savior, taking on ruthless corporate overlords and corrupt forces who threaten his son, his friends, and his community. In a world where greed runs rampant... justice is best served radioactive." Toxie in "The Toxic Avenger". Toxie in "The Toxic Avenger". Troma Entertainment Inc. While Dinklage provides the voice for Toxie, Luisa Guerreiro does the body work for the toxic superhero. Speaking about the new Toxie suit, filmmaker Macon Blair said, "The goal was to try to stay true to the vibe of Lloyd's original Jennifer Aspinall/Mitch Cohen creature, with some influence from the 'Toxic Crusaders' cartoon's look, while also trying to do something new and weird and lovable with Toxie's design. I love what Millenium FX did with it — part human, part mutant, all heart." Taylour Paige plays JJ Doherty in the film, an investigative journalist who is looking to expose the company Gooze works for and bring them to justice. Jacob Tremblay plays Winston's stepson, Wade. Kevin Bacon plays chemical industrialist Bob Garbinger while Elijah Wood plays his younger brother, Fritz. Macon Blair, who wrote and directed "The Toxic Avenger" reboot, previously collaborated with Wood on his feature directorial debut, 2017's "I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore." The reboot has been in the works for over a decade, but thankfully for Troma fans, things have changed since development began. The plan was originally to turn the "Toxic Avenger" reboot into a PG-13 action comedy. Blair has instead stuck to the splatter spirit of the original. "The Toxic Avenger" hits theaters on August 29. The film is written and directed by Macon Blair. "The Toxic Avenger" stars Peter Dinklage, Luisa Guerreiro, Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Kevin Bacon, Elijah Wood and Jane Levy. James Gunn Confirms Three 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Actors Appear in 'Superman'

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors Some directors are known for working with the same actors multiple times, and "Superman" writer/director James Gunn is definitely one of those filmmakers. So it should come as little surprise that at least three "Guardians of the Galaxy" actors make cameos in the upcoming "Superman". Read More: Kevin Smith Is Writing A New 'Daredevil' Story Speaking to Buzzfeed Australia, James Gunn let the proverbial cat out of the bag about the three "Guardians" cameos. "I will give you something that nobody knows, but Pom Klementieff is one of the robots," Gunn revealed. "It's Bradley [Cooper] and then it's also Pom and Michael Rooker is another one of the robots." Chris Pratt as Peter Quill in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3." Chris Pratt as Peter Quill in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3." DISNEY Fans will remember Pom Klementieff plays the antennae-wielding empath Mantis who first appears in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" and is ultimately revealed to be Peter Quill's (Chris Pratt) half-sister. Michael Rooker plays the Ravager Yondu in the first two films, while Bradley Cooper has been the voice of Rocket Raccoon in all of his "Guardians" and "Avengers" appearances. In case you're confused about what robots Gunn is referring to: the three "Guardians" actors, along with Alan Tudyk, are voicing the Kryptonian robots who stand guard over Superman's Fortress of Solitude. Asked about "Guardians" actors Dave Bautista and Zoe Saldana, Gunn said he was "keeping them in the wings." Technically, we already knew about one "Guardians of the Galaxy" actor appearing in "Superman". Nathan Fillion, who plays Guy Gardner/Green Lantern in the DC blockbuster, appears in both the first and third "Guardians" features. He would have appeared in the second, but his cameo was sadly cut. We already know Fillion's time as Guy Gardner will be longer than anything he did in the "Guardians" franchise. Along with "Superman", he's been confirmed to play Gardner in Season 2 of "Peacemaker" and Season 1 of "Lanterns". The fact that Klementieff, Cooper, and Rooker add their voices to "Superman" doesn't cut them out of future DC Studios appearances, either. In fact, we already know Rooker will appear again. Along with playing Savant in 2021's "The Suicide Squad", Rooker will play the eagle hunter Red St. Wild in the upcoming Season 2 of "Peacemaker". "Superman" releases in theaters on July 11. Tickets are on sale now. The film is written and directed by James Gunn. "Superman" stars David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced.
