Sisi discusses Egyptian economy competitiveness with Cabinet

CAIRO - 2 June 2025: President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was briefed by several ministers on Sunday on the steps taken to enhance the competitiveness of the Egyptian economy and increase foreign direct investment through a unified national investment strategy.
The strategy includes structural reforms, setting specific objectives, incentive-driven fiscal policies and open trade policies.
It also focuses on encouraging the private sector and continuing digital transformation as fundamental pillars for development.
Investors are encouraged by simplifying and streamlining investment-related procedures and approvals, facilitating licensing procedures through the launch of a unified platform that offers electronic licensing services, and reducing non-tax financial burdens on investors and companies, according to a statement by the presidential spokesperson.
The meeting also addressed the progress of a project to construct an Unclean Dry Bulk terminal at Abu Qir Seaport in Alexandria, as part of efforts to transform Egypt into a global hub for transportation, logistics, and transit trade.
A study was also reviewed on establishing a logistics terminal for receiving and handling raw iron and billets in Adabiya, Suez, as part of efforts to transform Egypt into a global hub for the iron and steel industry.
The meeting also touched on the work of The Sovereign Fund of Egypt for Investment and Development, including the operational and legislative frameworks for maximizing the value of the Fund's affiliate companies, as well as efforts to list and monitor state-owned enterprises to ensure increased investment value and internal returns from these companies.
President El-Sisi gave directives to continue efforts to maximize returns from state assets and generate added value for the Egyptian economy through their effective management by innovative strategies and partnerships with the private sector.
The meeting also addressed increasing Egyptian exports, including the development of non-petroleum exports. The meeting reviewed the contribution of Egyptian exports to the Egyptian economy from 2003 to 2024, as well as export targets, which include access to new export sectors, efforts to increase the competitiveness and attractiveness of Egyptian products in global markets, and efforts to invest in export-supporting infrastructure.
The meeting also addressed the launch of the National Economic Development Narrative and its various axes, which include policies supporting the private sector to be the main driver of achieving growth and employment, creating an economy that focuses on manufacturing and exports, achieving structural development for the Egyptian economy, implementing the necessary structural reforms to boost the economy, enhancing macroeconomic and financial stability, promoting foreign direct investment, and enhancing industrial development.
The meeting with the President included Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport Lieutenant General Kamel Al-Wazir, Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of Finance Ahmed Kouchouk, and Minister of Investment and Hassan El-Khatib.

Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to Egypt and the Arab League Hanan Hamdan stressed the importance of increasing international support, not only for refugees, but also for host communities that are facing growing pressures. During a meeting with the Cabinet's Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC) on Friday 20/6/2025, Hamdan hailed Egypt's efforts at the institutional and grassroots levels, in support of refugees, describing Egypt's experience in this regard as an example to follow. 'There are no official camps for refugees, who are integrated into the Egyptian society, which continues to welcome them with open arms,' Hamdan pointed out. She noted that the UNHCR is working closely with various ministries, as well as educational and health institutions in Egypt, to provide joint support, which reflects positively on both refugees and the host community. Hamdan said that the UNHCR's visit to Egypt, set for June 24, comes at a crucial time to launch a response plan that deals with the fallout from the Sudanese and Syrian crises while meeting the needs of other refugees in Egypt and supporting host communities in Egypt. She highlighted the burdens Egypt bears to provide decent humanitarian support to these refugees. Asserting the UNHCR's keenness to highlight the suffering of refugees and asylum seekers around the world on World Refugee Day, observed on June 20, Hamdan said that global funding is still not enough to provide for refugees' needs, given the mounting humanitarian crises and their complexity.

Egypt, Italy mull ways to boost AI cooperation
Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Amr Talaat discussed with Italy's Minister of Enterprises, Adolfo Urso, ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). They held a meeting in the Italian capital, Rome, in the presence of Bassam Rady, Egypt's Ambassador to Italy, to review key developments in AI applications in both Egypt and Italy. They also followed up on discussions initiated during Urso's visit to Egypt in April 2024, which aimed to lay the foundations for constructive collaboration between the two countries in various aspects of AI and its infrastructure. During the meeting, Talaat explained the main aspects and objectives of the second edition of Egypt's national AI strategy, noting that it focuses on building digital capacities, AI governance, fostering innovation, research and development, and enhancing international cooperation in this field. For his part, Urso highlighted Italy's efforts to support startups working in the AI sector. He also outlined the features of an initiative launched by Italy during its 2024 presidency of the G7, which involves the establishment of an 'AI center for Sustainable Development'. This initiative aims to support the use of AI in advancing development efforts across the African continent. Urso expressed keenness to strengthen bilateral cooperation in AI, as well as to collaborate on a regional level to implement and achieve the goals of this initiative. He also thanked the Egyptian Ministry of Communications for nominating a representative to serve on the center's executive committee. This meeting is part of Talaat's visit to Italy, in response to an invitation from Urso. During the visit, several meetings were held with officials from Italian companies and institutions to boost cooperation and attract more investment into Egypt's communications and IT sector.

Egypt, Turkey aim to boost trade to $15 bln: FM Abdelatty - Foreign Affairs
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said during a Friday meeting with Turkish business leaders in Istanbul that Egypt and Turkey seek to deepen economic ties and increase bilateral trade from $9 billion to $15 billion. According to Egypt's Foreign Ministry, Abdelatty described Turkey as a key destination for Egyptian exports and positioned Egypt as a strategic gateway for Turkish goods into African markets. The meeting, held on the sidelines of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation's ministerial gathering, is part of broader efforts to strengthen Turkish investment in Egypt. Abdelatty said the political leadership of both countries set the $15 billion target and reflects a shared commitment to closer economic integration. After years of diplomatic strain, relations between the two countries have warmed significantly. President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan co-chaired the inaugural session of the High-level Strategic Cooperation Council in Ankara in September 2024 — a body established by joint declaration during Erdoğan's earlier visit to Cairo. The council aims to elevate bilateral relations to the strategic level across multiple sectors.
