TNB earmarks RM43 bln to upgrade national grid with AI, battery storage systems
KUALA LUMPUR: National utility company Tenaga Nasional Bhd has committed RM43 billion to upgrade the national grid infrastructure, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He said that the upgrade will incorporate artificial intelligence and battery energy storage systems to build greater resilience and flexibility for the future.
'We must invest in improving efficiency and reducing emissions within our existing energy systems, a formidable task, given that fossil fuels still account for nearly 80 per cent of global supply.
'Most importantly, this transition must be anchored in equity,' the prime minister said in his keynote address at the Energy Asia 2025 conference today.
Anwar also issued a reminder that decarbonisation efforts that ignore the needs of the poor and vulnerable risk deepening inequality.
Touching on ASEAN, he highlighted that the bloc has already laid the groundwork for this pragmatic pathway through the ASEAN Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Deployment Framework and Roadmap, which aims to streamline policies and facilitate the flow of capital and carbon across borders.
'Malaysia is doing its part. Earlier this year, we passed the Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage Bill 2025 to provide a regulatory foundation for this emerging sector.
'Petronas is leading the charge with plans to develop three CCS hubs in our offshore waters, serving not just the oil and gas sector but also other hard-to-abate industries,' he said.
Anwar added that Malaysia's CCS efforts involve more than 10 international partners, including Japan, South Korea, and global energy firms such as Total and Shell.
'Petronas is also working with ENEOS Corporation, Mitsubishi and JX Nippon to explore the transportation and storage of carbon dioxide from the Tokyo Bay area to Malaysia. This positions CCS not only as a vital decarbonisation tool but also as a promising new revenue stream for the region,' he said.
The Energy Asia 2025 conference, with the theme 'Delivering Asia's Energy Transition', taking place from June 16 to 18, is an opportune moment for Malaysia and the region to take stock of progress made towards energy transition objectives and reinforce national commitments to achieving net-zero goals.
The conference is timely, coming at a critical juncture in economic diversification and sustainable development as nations transition from traditional oil to renewable energy and embrace new technologies such as hydrogen and carbon capture.

Petrosains Discovery Rover makes exclusive Sabah stop to promote STEM to rural students
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has been chosen as the first and only state to host the Petrosains Discovery Rover this year, bringing the excitement of hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning directly to communities in remote areas. The Petrosains Discovery Rover, a mobile exhibition truck equipped with interactive STEM exhibits, will tour over nine districts across the state. Petrosains' chief executive officer, Ezarisma Azni Mohamad, said the initiative aims to ignite interest in STEM among students while upskilling teachers with tools and techniques for more engaging classroom delivery. 'Sabah is the first and only state to host the Discovery Rover this year, making this launch especially meaningful. We are committed to empowering students, particularly in rural and underserved areas, through quality STEM education,' he said at the programme's launching ceremony at SJK (C) Kuok Ming in Tawau on Saturday (June 21). He added that the initiative reflects Petrosains' mission as a social impact arm of PETRONAS to democratise access to science and technology education and unlock opportunities for students regardless of geography. The Discovery Rover features engaging activities, including Math Kit, to strengthen numeracy through interactive problem-solving, Drone Challenge to introduce flight principles and basic coding and Carbon-O-Polly, which focuses on carbon literacy and sustainability. Other activities include Da Vinci Bridge, which combines physics and creativity in a challenge, Science Show to demonstrate scientific concepts in fun, accessible ways, and Teachers' Upskilling Sessions, aimed at enhancing classroom STEM delivery techniques. The launch was officiated by the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry's deputy permanent secretary II, Syahrin Samsir, on behalf of permanent secretary Datuk Mohd Hanafiah Mohd Kassim. Malaysians Need To Earn Average RM4000 To Introduce GST, Says Anwar
Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the reintroduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) remains unsuitable for now, citing the rakyat's low income threshold as a key concern. Speaking during the Finance Ministry's monthly assembly, Anwar explained that although GST is recognised as an efficient and transparent taxation mechanism, it imposes a comprehensive financial burden — particularly on low-income earners. 'We postponed (GST) because the income of the people was still too low. My opinion at the time was that people with an income of RM2,000 were still affected although we gave some exemptions,' he said. He highlighted how even though basic necessities such as sugar and rice may be exempt, GST still applies indirectly when people purchase other goods or use public transport. 'It is comprehensive,' he noted. The government, according to Anwar, would only revisit GST implementation when the average household income reaches a more reasonable level — at least RM4,000 a month. 'Let the people's income increase first… maybe at that time we can (implement it). Right now, there are people earning RM1,700 or RM2,000,' he said. For now, the government is focused on a more targeted Sales and Service Tax (SST) system. He said tax revenue collected through SST will be channelled into core public sectors such as education and healthcare. 'The allocation for the Ministry of Education from RM58 billion in 2024 has increased to RM64 billion this year. Similarly, for the Ministry of Health, RM41 billion last year… we are adding RM4 billion to make it RM45 billion,' Anwar said. GST was introduced on Apr 1, 2015, with a standard rate of 6%, but was later repealed on Sept 1, 2018, following widespread criticism over its impact on consumers, particularly those from lower income brackets. It was replaced with the SST system. On 9 June, the government announced a targeted review of the Sales Tax rate and an expanded scope for the Service Tax, effective 1 July, aimed at strengthening Malaysia's fiscal position by increasing revenue while protecting essential goods from new taxes.
