Episode 2
Episode 2 of Second Shot at Love begins with Geum-ju running away from home. Miss Nosy spots Geum-ju heading to the river. In the morning, Geum-ju's clothes and shoes are strewn around the riverbank, suggesting that she has drowned.
A flashback shows Geum-ju taking off her clothes as she stinks. She steps on dog poop and loses her shoes while trying to wash them in the river. She then jumps in front of Ui-joon's car and he crashes and breaks his leg as he swerves. He is irritated by the whole thing as he carries her home.
In the morning, she is embarrassed and offers financial compensation. Right then, he gets a harrowing call that everyone is looking for Geum-ju's corpse. She runs over and her family is relieved to see her alive. Tired of her antics, her mom, Gwang-ok tries to drown herself.
Seon-wook and Ui-joon discuss how Geum-ju broke Ui-joon's leg and crashed his car. Of course, Miss Nosy overhears and as expected, the news spreads like wildfire.
Everyone scolds Geum-ju and to redeem herself, they order her to look after Ui-joon. It cuts to a montage of her driving him around and doing chores he would otherwise do for his patients. She is curious as to why he left Seoul and he deflects by asking about her job.
A flashback shows her experiencing sexism at her workplace. As revenge, she decides to take all of her PTO leaves. She is unfairly fired because of this.
At present, the neighbouring ladies hound Gwang-ok. In response, she berates them for selling alcohol to her family and puts a ban in place. All the alcohol sellers are forced to listen as she handles the town's quick loans.
Flashbacks show that Hyeon-ju gets pregnant, married and divorced because she drinks. She also drinks as being a single mother is tiring. As for Jeong-su, he loses his junkyard, restaurant and almost loses the house because he drinks.
At present, everyone refuses to sell the Hans alcohol. Geum-ju is annoyed and it doesn't help as Ui-joon claims that the town is trying to help her. She calls him a hypocrite as he is a drinker as well.
Later, Seon-wook reveals that Ui-joon quit so he could look after his patients. He also left Seoul and opened a clinic in Bochun as it lacked basic medical care. Young-woong doesn't buy this and does a little digging. An alumni post suggests that Ui-joon unfairly lost his tenure and his fiancée left him for someone else. He quit the hospital and became an alcoholic for a while. Now he rejects major offers from Seoul hospitals.
Geum-ju finds Ui-joon sulking at a river spot. A flashback shows her introducing it to him to cheer him up after his grandmother dies.
At present, Geum-ju tries to forget about Ui-joon but she realises that she would have liked some support when she broke up with Ju-yeop. She decides to cheer up Ui-joon by making him a lavish meal and giving him pep talks. While he is confused, his nurse warns Geum-ju not to flirt with him.
Right then, Ui-joon rejects a major offer. Exasperated, Geum-ju reveals that she knows about his past and urges him to take the offer. Suddenly, her friends alert her that the alumni post isn't about Ui-joon.
Elsewhere, Hyeon-ju hangs out while her twins take their taekwondo class with Seon-wook. She jokes around with him and we learn that he likes her. Once she leaves, her friend sadly comments on how she could have been a star. Seon-wook is irked as she is still a star to him.
Back to our leads, Ui-joon quickly masks his amusement and tells Geum-ju not to meddle in his life. She is hurt and agrees that she has crossed a line. A flashback shows them at an airport. She tries to stop him and he says that she has crossed the line.
At present, she scolds herself for not respecting Ui-joon's boundaries. However, he thinks of her all night.
The next morning, she decides to go back to acting as his driver. However, she begs Seon-wook to replace her when she gets a notification. Turns out, it is Ju-yeop's birthday and she had ordered a cake in advance. It cuts to a dramatic chase to Seoul to stop the delivery. However, she runs into Ju-yeop in the elevator.
He finally explains that the affair began because he was drunk. Upset by his hypocrisy, she orders him to get it together for his kid's sake. He tells her not to cross a line and that she should solve her issues first.
Ui-joon had said the same thing and Geum-ju is upset. After flinging the cake at Ju-yeop, she gets drunk.
Back home, Ui-joon worries about her. He finds a drunk Geum-ju who is babbling about a cake to Seon-wook. Ui-joon misunderstands and thinks she abandoned him to get drunk at a party. Seon-wook reveals that she is hurting Ui-joon and that she needs to become a decent person. As they leave, she cries.
Angry, Ui-joon drinks at home as well. He suddenly sees a comment on the alumni post and is shocked. It says that Ui-joon has killed someone.
In the Second Shot at Love Episode 2 epilogue, Ui-joon and Geum-ju are having a drinking competition in 2011. She is a sore loser and he carries her home. He wants to win in everything so he can take care of her.
The Episode Review
Having set up the drama of Geum-ju's drinking and how it affects her and those around her, Second Shot at Love Episode 2 goes back to the usual K-drama formula of misunderstandings, miscommunication and mayhem.
Not to compare, but we have seen something like this in recent rom-coms like Welcome to Samdalri and Love Next Door. The female protagonist refuses to tell the male protagonist the truth, viewers are left in the dark about what happened between the couple, and the atmosphere is quite vague and frustrating. This takes away from Geum-ju's alcoholism and tense family dynamic which are quite sensitive plotlines and need a sensitive treatment.
While there is potential for Second Shot at Love to do something good with its ambitious undertaking, we have a feeling that all of that may be sidelined for a tumultuous will-they-won't-they romance that may take up the majority of the runtime. It's a pity since Episode 1 exceeded expectations. But maybe next week can assuage our fears of the direction this show may take.

They are perfect for a quick binge session with light angst that is quickly resolved, lovable ensembles and hilarious antics. We can easily recall several such wholesome shows like Once Upon a Small Town, Summer Strike and Hometown Cha Cha Cha. And the latest to join this genre happens to be Second Shot at Love. Second Shot at Love is an exciting K-drama from tvN which is known for fun rom-coms like Lovely Runner, What's Wrong with Secretary Kim and True Beauty. Said to be a wholesome rom-com, it has everything from small-town chaos and drunken mistakes to first love and healing. The cast includes Choi Soo-young, Gong Myung, Jo Yoon-hee, Kang Hyung-suk, Kim Sung-ryung and Kim Sang-ho among others. It is created by writer Myung Soo-hyun who is known for comedies with a message like Monthly Magazine Home and Drinking Solo. The K-drama follows Han Geum-ju, a genius mechanic and bubbly woman who loves drinking. But after her engagement falls apart, she loses her job and her apartment, her mother, Gwang-ok, tries to get her to stop drinking. As she is forced to move back to her home town, she struggles to come to terms with her alcoholism and the need to get sober. It doesn't help that her sister and father are alcoholics as well and seem to join her in her drunken antics. On top of that, Geum-ju's former best friend and first love, Dr Seo Ui-joon, hates alcohol and constantly preaches the treatment of alcohol abuse. Despite having a successful practice in Seoul, he moves back to their home town and is more than happy to ignore Geum-ju, much to her annoyance. Second Shot at Love Season 1 is the perfect mini-healing drama as it is full of minor conflicts which are quickly resolved. Along with it, all the characters grow, heal, find love and acceptance. The light and peppy music, paired with the bright and cheerful town of Bochun, sets up the atmosphere for Geum-ju and her friends to grow and get better. The physical comedy is hilarious and actually needed to stop the show from getting too heavy, given the tackling of a difficult issue like alcoholism. But don't worry, the show doesn't take it too lightly either. With alcohol abuse being a rampant issue in South Korea, it seems that the studio has taken it upon itself to churn out a gentle PSA with this show. Without getting too didactic, it explores the different perspectives of those who drink and the bystanders who are affected by it. It ends up fleshing all the secondary characters and giving them their own, relatable storylines like that of Gwang-ok, Geum-ju's sister and even the town gossip. The cast also puts on a commendable portrayal of sharing the story of Bochun's alcoholics, clowns and well-wishers. Soo-young plays into Geum-ju's desperation and co-dependency while also keeping it light and funny with all the goofy moments her character finds herself in. Those who watched Second Shot at Love live will definitely get whiplash from Gong Myung playing a psychopath in Mercy for None and then the lovable dork that is Ui-joon in the same breath. And Kim Sung-ryung deserves a shout-out as her Gwang-ok steals the scene, whether with a hilarious chase sequence or an emotional rant. Unfortunately, there is a melodramatic plot twist near the end involving damaged livers and transplants. Its purpose is to help the characters empathise with those suffering and to help them grow. The only problem is that the characters have already grown and accepted their mistakes, making the transplant twist unnecessary, except to add some spice to the story. This seems to be a recurring problem, as the main story is wrapped up in the first 10 episodes. And the final two episodes are reserved for a sudden thriller involving Ui-joon's missing parents. This is the second whiplash of this series, given that it completely changes the tone and is quite unnecessary as well. Had the writers never introduced this thriller subplot in the first place, maybe this wholesome K-drama and Han Geum-ju could have gotten the ending they deserve.

Second Shot at Love – K-drama Episode 12 Recap, Review & Ending Explained

Episode 12 Episode 12 of Second Shot at Love begins with Geum-ju and Ui-joon heading to the nursing home. Mr Seo is drinking nearby and sees them. Geum-ju waits outside and calls the cops when Mr Seo goes after Ui-joon. Why did Nurse Baek abandon Ui-joon? Nurse Baek survives the stabbing and Geum-ju heads to her place to pick up some clothes. She ends up finding a letter which details why Baek left Ui-joon. A flashback shows that Baek gets pregnant with Ui-joon when she is in college. Her father disapproves and wants her to get an abortion. When she refuses, he forces her to give Ui-joon to Seo's mother and sends her abroad. She finally returns during Ui-joon's graduation. She keeps her identity a secret as she believes it would hurt less if he thought his mother had died. Once he becomes a doctor, she stays by his side. On his birthday, her father wants to meet her. It is why she swaps shifts with Nurse Jeong. After the murder, she promises to make Mr Seo pay for ruining Jeong and Ui-joon. At present, Ui-joon confronts her and she reveals that she was scared. The town ladies learn that Baek paid for all of Ui-joon's 'scholarships' and tuition. While the cops search for Mr Seo, there is also an investigation as Baek kidnapped him and held him captive in the nursing home. How does Ui-joon come to terms with the situation? Ui-joon isn't sure how to react to his mother and avoids Baek. She asks Geum-ju to stay by his side no matter what. She ends up revealing how he cut ties with Geum-ju because he was afraid Mr Seo would hurt her. Fortunately, Ui-joon has no such plans. He promises that he won't leave Geum-ju again to protect her. To lighten the mood, Geum-ju jokes that she will protect him. She helps him find Mr Seo but unfortunately, it is too late. Seo gets drunk and passes away at his mother's grave due to alcohol poisoning. Ui-joon holds his funeral but no one is present. Gradually, everyone from Bochun shows up and helps with the ceremony. Even the elderly patients send condolence wreaths. Ui-joon is overwhelmed and thinks he has failed as a doctor and a son. He also blames himself for Baek's injury. Geum-ju assures him that Baek endured it all so her son could find some happiness. In the end, he brings Nurse Baek to the funeral and accepts that it was alcohol that ruined Mr Seo. He also calls Nurse Baek his mother and thanks her for being by his side. She tears up as she calls him her son and they hug. How do Seon-wook and Hyeon-ju get together? Seon-wook runs away to Seoul as he has a hard time getting over Hyeon-ju. Seon-hwa is sick with worry and her mother-in-law comforts her. She regrets opposing Seon-hwa and Young-woong's marriage. No one can stop love and she urges Seon-hwa to be happy for Seon-wook and Hyeon-ju. Hyeon-ju tries to surreptitiously bring some food but Seon-hwa catches her. Hyeon-ju declares that she is ready to wait till Seon-hwa becomes her friend again. She accepts that Seon-wook's kindness kindled her feelings for him but she will let them go. However, Seon-hwa tells her not to give them up. Gwang-ok also urges Hyeon-ju to be courageous. Turns out Jeong-su and Gwang-ok have a rich guy-poor girl love story. She thought she would ruin him but soon realised that she could not live without him. She tells Hyeon-ju not to have any regrets. At present, Hyeon-ju finds Seon-wook. He is shocked that Seon-hwa gave her blessing and that Hyeon-ju wants to date him. He is overjoyed and they hug. How does it end for everyone? A year passes by. Nurse Baek's probation is over and she joins a cooking club. Geum-ju and Ui-joon are happy and still dating. At home, Ui-joon and Seon-wook often compete over the title of best future son-in-law. Ui-joon leaves the clinic and opens a hospital to treat alcoholism. Geum-ju goes to team dinners now but remains sober. At the end of Second Shot at Love Episode 12, Geum-ju and Ui-joon go on a run. She is still tempted by alcohol now and then. To distract her, he kisses her and she runs after him for more. The Episode Review With most of the drama wrapped up, Second Shot at Love Episode 12 gets emotional as it solely focuses on Ui-joon and his family. The K-drama continues with the theme of alcoholism but with Mr Seo, who ends up hurting his ex and dying because of it. However, there is too much going on, in fact, worthy of a whole K-drama instead of a one-episode subplot. Mr Seo goes from wanting money from Ui-joon to wanting to kill him as a way to get back at his ex. But it is never shown when Seo realises that Baek is back. It is not clear when they broke up and it doesn't make sense why Grandma Seo takes in the child of her teenage son's ex-girlfriend. If Baek's family is so powerful that they keep Nurse Baek abroad till she is a middle-aged woman, why do they stop caring once she returns and sticks by Ui-joon's side? If Mr Seo was such a bad man, why did he visit his mother's grave? There are too many plot holes that are never explained and it is a shame, as this storyline is quite intriguing. Unfortunately, this show was never about the Baek family drama. But by shoving it into the finale, the Hans don't get the finale they deserve. Geum-ju becomes a secondary character in her own show. Hyeon-ju and Seon-wook barely get any space to wrap up their love story. And apart from a few passing comments about the Hans' alcoholism, it is never brought up again. All in all, as a stand-alone episode, this one works as a strong foundation for a thriller that we will never get, and ends up as a disappointing final episode for the show it actually belongs to. Second Shot at Love – K-drama Episode 11 Recap & Review

Episode 11 Episode 11 of Second Shot at Love begins with Geum-ju comforting Ui-joon. He tells her about his past. In 1996, his mother dies and unable to take it, his father abandons him. His grandmother and Geum-ju are the only two people in his life. When he grows up, his father returns as an alcoholic, demanding money. After Ui-joon becomes a doctor, he gets Mr Seo admitted against his wishes. Mr Seo lies about his recovery and once he is out, he attacks Ui-joon on his birthday and accidentally kills Nurse Jeong. Because of his clinically proven alcoholism, he gets a light sentence. Ui-joon blames himself for the lenient punishment and Jeong's death. It is also why he has been sober. Gwang-ok is discharged from the hospital and everyone welcomes her. Once Nurse Baek has Gwang-ok settled, she leaves, citing the umpteenth club she has joined to look after Ui-joon. The Hans gush over how lucky Ui-joon is to have her. Geum-ju does find their close bond odd but Ui-joon jokes that he is likeable. It cuts to Mr Seo, causing a scene whenever he is conscious. Nurse Baek wonders if her visit triggered him. We also learn that the cops helped Ui-joon contact Caretaker Oh. He tells Nurse Baek about the meeting and she wishes he would move on and live a happy life. He learns that Oh and Baek are classmates but Baek claims not to know her. Onto the second lead couple's drama. Hyeon-ju takes her twins out of the taekwondo class. Seon-wook begs Seon-hwa to help change her mind but his sister vaguely refuses. Once he leaves, she declares that she is done with Hyeon-ju for good. Next, Ms Nosy continues to sulk and avoid Gwang-ok. However, Gwang-ok shows up, having missed her. Ms Nosy feels guilty for being rude to her and the illness gave her a reality check. A flashback shows Ms Nosy's husband being thoughtless. He gets drunk with friends on their honeymoon. And also lets it slip that Gwang-ok is his first love. At present, Ms Nosy reveals that she was insecure and took it out on her. Gwang-ok comforts her as she apologises. Back to our lead couple, Geum-ju is tasked with supervising a car crash case. Coincidentally, the van belongs to the nursing home and Ui-joon tells her about her father allegedly being seen there. The mood lightens up when she finds his gift from all those years ago. He wants to gift her something better but she wears the necklace. She arrives home and feels guilty for being happy while Hyeon-ju is sad. Hyeon-ju reveals that she wants to fix things with Seon-hwa. The sisters cheer each other up but Hyeon-ju ghosts Seon-wook as he tries to call her. Upset, Seon-wook wants to get drunk again. Trying to deter him, Young-woong lets it slip that drunk him ruined Seon-hwa and Hyeon-ju's friendship. Outside, Instructor Kim spots Seon-hwa bringing hangover medicines for Seon-wook. She is wearing an old jacket and Kim berates her for not taking care of herself. Seon-wook overhears and feels bad. Geum-ju visits the nursing home to resolve the car crash and leaves before Ui-joon can pick her up. But he ends up running into Caretaker Oh and is shocked since she had told him she had retired. She claims it is temporary and a call cuts short their meeting. As for Geum-ju, she spots Nurse Baek at the bus terminal. She tries to surprise her but Baek claims she is in Seoul. Geum-ju is confused as Baek's bus heads to Myeongju, the nursing home's location. Meanwhile, Ms Nosy treats the town to celebrate Gwang-ok's recovery. Her husband, Ki-beom, is rude and she is grateful as Gwang-ok puts him in his place. Seon-hwa is missing and her mother-in-law jokes how it is strange since she is practically family to the Hans. Seon-wook and Hyeon-ju feel guilty. As they are wrapping up, Seon-wook apologises and promises to back off. However, he hopes Hyeon-ju can understand Seon-hwa and forgive her as she has no one else. The Nurse Baek mystery continues as Ui-joon had seen Baek call Caretaker Oh. But he gives her the benefit of the doubt. Geum-ju Googles all the clubs that Baek is a part of but they have all shut down. She heads to the hospital for medicines and overhears the nurses gossip how Baek should hate Ui-joon. She runs into his mentor who reveals that Baek was only close to Nurse Jeong and Ui-joon. Baek felt guilty as she swapped shifts with Jeong the day she died. At the same time, the cops update Ui-joon that the nursing home belongs to Nurse Baek and Caretaker Oh is its director. Oh is tucking in Mr Seo when he wakes up and looks at a syringe. Ui-joon shows up at the nursing home and confronts Baek. Mr Seo pops up with a broken glass bottle. He claims that he wants to kill Ui-joon as revenge against Nurse Baek. Seo attacks but she steps in front of Ui-joon and is stabbed. Mr Seo runs off as Geum-ju calls the cops. A flashback shows Baek's conversation that triggers Seo. She reveals that Ui-joon is her son. The Second Shot at Love Episode 11 epilogue is of the class graduation. The Hans pick bouquets for Geum-ju and Ui-joon but a lady in red pays for them. It is Nurse Baek who watches Ui-joon and then leaves. The Episode Review Second Shot at Love Episode 11 tries to wrap up most of the storylines and give all the supporting characters closure. Geum-ju and Ui-joon are in a good place. Gwang-ok recovers, is treated well by her family and the mini conflict with Ms Kim aka Ms Nosy is quickly resolved. Hyeon-ju and Seon-wook understand where Seon-hwa comes from. And hopefully, she'll most likely come to terms and give Hyeon-ju and Seon-wook her blessing in the finale. In fact, this whole episode feels like a finale and could have been the perfect point to wrap up. The added mystery with Mr Seo and Nurse Baek feels unnecessary, especially since it never contributed to the main plot. The set-up has just been a few seconds over the past 10 episodes and no one would miss it if this subplot cut out. But now, the show will need to spin some convoluted plot twist to explain Nurse Baek's disappearance and why she keeps her identity a secret from her son.
