Avocado sector platform in Uganda to propel growth and unlock global market opportunities
Key public and private sector stakeholders convened in Kampala to validate the national avocado sector roadmap and action plan for the next three years.
The milestone marks the culmination of a series of collaborative efforts led by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), with support from the International Trade Centre (ITC) through the European Union (EU)-funded EU-East African Community (EAC) Market Access Upgrade Programme (MARKUP II).
Building on the first consultative meeting held in November 2024, two informal meetings were held in February and March 2025 to review and refine the roadmap. The platform's formalization under MAAIF leadership reflects strong public-private commitment to transforming Uganda into a competitive avocado exporter.
Key steps have been taken to operationalize the platform, including preparation of a draft secretariat budget and exploration of funding opportunities. A public-private partnership model is envisioned, with MAAIF hosting the platform and private sector partners supporting the secretariat. An Expression of Interest for the secretariat was shared with industry associations and will be soon finalized.
MAAIF will officially activate the platform and convene its first formal meeting to elect a Chair, finalize the work plan, set key performance indicators for the platform.
The Uganda Avocado Roadmap prioritizes several transformative actions.:
Improved Hass seedling distribution at preferential rates;
Promotion of GAP certification through avocado associations;
Establishment of a hub-and-spoke model with commercial farmers and cooperatives to serve as input supply, aggregation, and learning centers;
Creation of an avocado export consortium for collective international representation and standards compliance;
Investment in affordable packaging solutions and cold-chain for fresh exports;
Possible development of an avocado oil refinery and valorization of waste (e.g., seed husks, pulp residue) into animal feed.
The validated roadmap sets a clear direction for the sector, positioning Uganda to increase avocado exports, enhance farmer livelihoods, and contribute to agro-industrial transformation.

Oman strengthens food security through model farm programme
Dhank: More than 250 farms in Al Dhahirah Governorate have benefited from the Commercial Model Fields Program, an initiative launched by the Ministry of Agricultural, Fisheries and Water Resources in 2020 to promote sustainable agriculture and strengthen food security across the Sultanate, according to a report by Oman Daily. As part of the program, over 9,000 tissue-cultured date palm saplings and 6,000 high-quality fruit tree seedlings have been distributed to farmers across the governorate, covering more than 140 acres of cultivated land. The initiative supports economic-scale farms in all three wilayats of Al Dhahirah, helping them adopt modern irrigation systems and apply advanced agricultural practices. The program aims to improve productivity, raise the quality of local produce, and increase farmers' income through the cultivation of carefully selected fruit varieties, including mango, Eureka lemon, Omani lime, guava, fig, and grapes. It also encourages a shift toward water-efficient farming methods by requiring the installation of modern irrigation systems as a condition for support. According to the General Directorate of Agricultural Wealth and Water Resources in Al Dhahirah, the model farms serve as living examples of what sustainable and profitable agriculture can look like when guided by structured planning, smart technology, and continuous field support. The ministry works closely with farmers to provide technical guidance, regular follow-ups, and field inspections. This hands-on approach ensures that farms not only meet production targets but also operate efficiently and sustainably in the long term. Though currently focused on Al Dhahirah, the program extends to other governorates as part of Oman's broader agricultural development strategy. Officials emphasize that the ultimate goal is to enhance food security, reduce reliance on imports, and equip local farmers with the tools needed to compete in a modern agricultural landscape. By integrating best practices with practical support, the Model Fields Program is reshaping the farming sector—field by field—toward a more resilient, productive, and food-secure Oman.

Egypt pushes to modernise sugarcane irrigation to boost yields
Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has met with ministers to review the development of irrigation systems for sugarcane, aiming to increase the strategic crop's yield while reducing water consumption. In a meeting with the relevant ministries and government agencies, Madbouly emphasised the government's focus on monitoring agriculture and irrigation projects. He said irrigation plays a pivotal role in managing water resources and adapting to environmental changes, which in turn ensures the availability of agricultural products and contributes to food security. 'Sugarcane is a strategic crop that must be cultivated using modern methods that increase its production, thereby helping to meet the needs of the local market,' Madbouly stated. Alaa El-Din Farouk, the Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, outlined the benefits of shifting to modern irrigation techniques for sugarcane. He said these methods could reduce water consumption by up to 30%, lower the use of agricultural inputs like fertilisers, decrease the spread of weeds and control costs, and ultimately enhance productivity. Farouk detailed specific modern irrigation techniques, including drip irrigation and developed field irrigation combined with water-saving agricultural practices such as laser levelling and planting on raised beds. He presented the requirements, costs, benefits, and implementation challenges associated with each method, along with potential solutions. The agriculture minister noted that there is significant potential for expanding the use of water-saving agricultural practices. He added that several of these methods are already popular among farmers and are characterised by their low cost and speed of implementation. Oman: Major agro logistics hub coming up in Najd area
MUSCAT - Oman Agriculture Development Company (OADC) – newly rebranded from the wholly state-owned Nakheel Oman Development Company – has announced the commencement of construction work on a major agro logistics hub at Najd in Dhofar Governorate. Formally known as the Integrated Center for the Collection, Sorting, and Marketing of Agricultural Products in the Najd area of Dhofar Governorate, the 50,000-tonnes-per-annum capacity facility will serve as a one-stop aggregation centre for the Najd Agricultural Zone, the largest of its kind in the Sultanate. Construction of the new Najd agro logistics hub at Saih al Khairat is being undertaken in collaboration with the Najd Agricultural Development Office at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, according to OADC. 'The project seeks to strengthen collaboration with the agricultural community in Najd by enhancing the region's agricultural logistics infrastructure. This includes produce collection from local farmers, cold storage, sorting, packaging, and processing — all aimed at improving product quality, minimizing waste, and expanding market access for Najd's agricultural output, both locally and regionally,' OADC – a subsidiary of Oman Food Investment Holding Company (Nitaj) – said in a post. 'Scheduled for completion by the end of the second quarter of 2026, the project represents a strategic step forward in building a more efficient and sustainable agricultural sector,' the company further added. Covering a farming area of over 54,000 acres, the Najd zone – with its abundance of groundwater resources, nutrient-rich soil, and favourable climate and environmental conditions – is tipped to evolve into Oman's leading 'breadbasket', with the potential to reduce the country's dependency on basic food imports and move toward self-sufficiency. The zone is witnessing the largest inflow of investments across all facets of the agricultural and livestock value chain, with the government earmarking land plots for, among other activities, crop cultivation, livestock farming, fruit and vegetable production, and greenhouses, alongside processing and value-added industries. According to the Ministry, the value of agricultural and farm assets in Najd totaled around RO 190 million at the end of 2024, with assets worth a further RO 50.5 million under development. Revenues from agriculture and farm output amounted to approximately RO 66 million during the 2023/2024 season, with the livestock sector contributing about RO 40 million. Agricultural production has also grown significantly: date production surged to 1,880 tonnes in 2024, up from 502 tonnes in 2022; wheat output soared by 600 per cent to 10,510 tonnes, up from 1,500 tonnes in 2022. Recognising the zone's potential to contribute to food security and economic diversification, a new Agricultural City is currently in the master-planning phase. The masterplan envisions investments in agri-processing industries, agricultural education, and even agri-tourism. It also aims to build capacity within Oman's agriculture sector through the use of cutting-edge technologies such as vertical farming, hydroponics, and aquaponics, supported by AI-driven solutions. The masterplan further prioritises sustainable water management and the integration of land dedicated to various agriculture-based activities such as post-harvest processing, education, and rural tourism. Significantly, the Najd complex is the latest in a series of agro logistics hubs either operational or under development across the country. The largest by far is the Khazaen Central Fruits & Vegetables Market (Silal), serving as a national node for fresh produce logistics covering Muscat, and North and South Al Batinah. Another hub, albeit smaller, is currently in operation in Nizwa.
