Real Madrid will continue its Club World Cup campaign without Kylian Mbappe, who won't play any part in Los Blancos' second group game against Pachuca on Sunday afternoon in the United States.
President Florentino Perez's summer of 2024 Galactico was taken to hospital earlier this week, after coming down with what the club described as an 'acute case of gastroenteritis'.
As confirmed by his head coach Xabi Alonso at a prematch press conference on Saturday, however, the Frenchman has sinec returned to the La Liga giant's Palm Becah training complex and could make his return to action in Madrid's next outing.
'He is better, he returned from the hospital and is recovering. We are optimistic to have him against Salzburg," Alonso said.
Scoring in the 1-1 draw against Al-Hilal that was Madrid's opener, academy prospect Gonzalo will replace the Frenchman once more and received praise from his manager.
'He can contribute what he did the other day, he is a striker who can be a reference, and he had three chances in addition to the goal,' Alonso said.
'We didn't have so many players in the area, but we'll see in the future. Now we're focused on this competition. Decisions will be made later,' the Spaniard added.
Completing the front line will be Rodrygo and a Vinicius Jr. who was criticized back home for still not being his best against opposition hailing from the Pro League which he's been linked with a big money move to.
After saying he doesn't believe Madrid has to help recover the Brazilian's best version, Alonso stated that Vinicius is doing 'well'.
'But we all want to push to make him decisive as he has been so many times,' Alonso accepted. 'He has that unpredictable football that makes him different. When he can connect on the pitch with his essence, he is fundamental'.
As for the rest of the line up, Thibaut Courtois again starts in goal while Fran Garcia and Trent Alexander are the full backs.
Dean Huijsen and Raul Asencio form a central defensive partnership, and have Aurelien Tchouameni in front of them for protection as a sole pivot.
With Jude Bellingham and Fede Valverde the midfielders, the front line is as stated with Vinicius, Gonzalo and Rodrygo from left to right.
Real Madrid First XI Vs. Pachuca: Courtois; Fran, Huijsen, Asencio, Trent; Tchouameni, Bellingham, Valverde; Vinicius, Gonzalo, Rodrygo
Real Madrid needs a win in the Club World Cup

Ex-Spain and Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla, 40, leads Oviedo back to the top flight in Spain
MADRID (AP) — With veteran Santi Cazorla leading the way 20 years after he left the club, Oviedo made it back to the first division of the Spanish league. The club owned by Mexico's Grupo Pachuca since 2022 secured its return to the top flight with a 3-2 aggregate victory over Mirandes in the final of the promotion playoffs on Saturday night. After a 1-0 first-leg loss, it won 3-1 in extra time with Cazorla scoring one of the goals. Advertisement Cazorla, the former Spain and Arsenal playmaker, converted a 39th-minute penalty for Oviedo, which sealed its promotion for the first time since the 2000-01 season thanks to Francisco Portillo's goal in extra time after erasing the first-leg deficit with a 2-1 win in regulation. Oviedo, coached by former Serbian player Veljko Paunovic since March, had been in the second division since 2015-16, and spent a few seasons in the third tier before that. 'At 40 years old I think this is the greatest thing I've ever experienced,' Cazorla said. 'I've been lucky enough to experience great things with Spain and with the clubs that I've been with, winning many trophies, but nothing compares to this.' Oviedo, based in northwestern Spain, is Cazorla's boyhood club. He rejoined Oviedo in 2023 after playing in Qatar. Advertisement 'I have a special feeling for this club,' Cazorla said. 'I played in this youth academy when I was 9 years old. I grew up here, I have my friends, my family. I'll be an Oviedo fan all my life. This makes it very special.' Cazorla, who dealt with serious injuries throughout his career, also thrived with Villarreal in Spain. He was a major contributor for Arsenal under Arsene Wenger from 2012-18. Grupo Pachuca recently made headlines as two of its clubs in Mexico, Leon and Pachuca, qualified for the Club World Cup but only Pachuca was allowed to compete because of regulations around multi-club ownership. Mirandes, based in northern Spain, was trying to make it to the first division for the first time. ___ AP soccer:

Deco confirms Barcelona plans for Ansu Fati, Frenkie de Jong and Ronald Araujo
Barcelona are in store for the busy summer transfer window, ahead of it re-opening for business on the 1st of July. Joan Garcia will officially join on this date, and there are also plans for Nico Williams to be signed from Athletic Club. Ansu Fati has chances to leave Barcelona this summer But in order for both players to be registered with La Liga, departures are needed. Ansu Fati is someone that is very much expected to go, although recent developments have been worrying. Nevertheless, Barcelona sporting director Deco has given an update on the situation during an interview with La Vanguardia. Advertisement 'With the age he is and the career he has had, he cannot be without playing. We are open to not putting problems if he wants to leave. Monaco have spoken to us. Ansu has a contract, if they ask for him it would be a loan. He's 23 years old, we talk about him as if he were 30, but for me he still has a lot to grow and learn.' Barcelona's Ansu Fati runs during the Spanish La Liga soccer match between Valladolid and FC Barcelona at the Jose Zorrilla stadium in Valladolid, Spain, Saturday, May 3, 2025. (Image via AP Photo/Manu Fernandez) Deco issues updates on Ronald Araujo and Frenkie de Jong Another player whose future has attracted significant speculation in recent weeks is Ronald Araujo. The Uruguayan defender has publicly committed his future to Barcelona, and Deco – who is reported to be a key backer of the 26-year-old – also has no plans for him to depart the club. Advertisement 'What we want is to improve the team, not make it worse. And if we lose an important piece, we are making it worse. Ronald has a contract, has renewed and has suffered a difficult season, with unfair criticism. He is one of the best centre-backs in the world. Leaving is not in Ronald's plans. He wants to return to his best level.' Image via RTVE Deco also had his say on Frenkie de Jong, whose future is also up for debate. He fully expects the Dutch midfielder to stay, and soon, contract talks between the two parties will formally begin. 'The Frenkie we had this season is the Frenkie we want. We want to continue with Frenkie, he has one more year on his contract and we are going to analyse things calmly.'

Ex Marseille Star Squanders Opportunity To Impress In Inter Milan 2-1 Urawa Red Diamonds FIFA Club World Cup Win
Ex Marseille Star Squanders Opportunity To Impress In Inter Milan 2-1 Urawa Red Diamonds FIFA Club World Cup Win Luis Henrique failed to take advantage of a chance to make his mark in Inter Milan's 2-1 Club World Cup win over Urawa Red Diamonds. Today's print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, argue that there was no end product from the Brazilian. Advertisement Luis Henrique made his first start for Inter Milan against Urawa Red Diamonds yesterday. The Brazilian had just signed for Inter a couple weeks ago. And Henrique had already shown flashes of his quality with his substitute appearance against Monterrey a few days ago. Therefore, Luis Henrique was certainly one of the main players to watch in the Inter starting eleven against Urawa Reds. Luis Henrique Fails To Impress For Inter Vs Urawa Red Diamonds Welcome Inter Milan Luis Henrique Article Image In the view of the Gazzetta dello Sport, however, Luis Henrique looked very much below par. The Brazilian did look to use his pace and technical ability from time to time. Advertisement However, Henrique generally would size up his defender and go sideways. He was unable to really cause any panic in the Urawa Reds defense with any of the dribbles he attempted. In wide areas, the Brazilian had little effect on the match. Then around the penalty area, very little that Henrique attempted came off. There is no doubt that Luis Henrique is a player with quality. However, that failed to materialize into anything tangible yesterday.
