‘Tornado' Review: She Wants Revenge
This crackling movie begins with what some might take for a bit of misdirection: a quotation from a poem by Arseny Tarkovsky, the father of the great filmmaker Andrei. 'I would readily pay with my life / For a safe place with constant warmth / Were it not that life's flying needle / Leads me on through the world like a thread.'
Given that the movie concerns Tornado, a young swordswoman who has to make her way through a hostile British countryside after wastrels kill her father, one might wonder what Tarkovsky has to do with it. But first consider the statement rather than its origin.
Tornado (Koki) has been touring with her samurai father (Takehiro Hira) through rural England, performing a charming puppet show. An initially prankish bit of business involving two sacks of stolen gold gets the duo in big trouble with a pack of thieves led by Sugarman (Tim Roth).
The writer-director John Maclean, who deftly played with genre in his 2015 feature debut 'Slow West,' is similarly sure-handed here. The movie quickly establishes itself as a revenge narrative, and each bad guy goes down in a way designed to suit the viewer's justified bloodlust.
In the title role, the singer-songwriter Koki is both charming and indomitable; when she announces 'I am Tornado,' you feel your internal applause sign light up. And Nathan Malone, who plays the little boy following Tornado as she eludes the bad guys, is reminiscent of the nervy star of Andrei Tarkovsky's 'Ivan's Childhood.'

"I am asking if you could please help us all by just giving a little towards helping my friends rebuild their businesses. We would be eternally grateful. "Fire is the most devastating thing. Thousands of pounds of stock has gone in seconds." Georgia added a link to a crowdfunder campaign which is raising money to help those affected by the fire. A statement posted on the page reads: "We're a group of 11 small business owners who have lost everything in the devastating fire at Storage World. "Overnight, our livelihoods, tools, stock, and years of hard work were reduced to ashes. What we had built up over time is now completely gone - and for many of us, starting again from scratch feels overwhelming without support. "We are now fundraising to raise £10,000 to help us begin the long journey of rebuilding our businesses. Every penny will go directly towards replacing essential equipment, materials, and supplies that we urgently need to get back on our feet. "This has been a heartbreaking time, but we are determined not to give up. Your support - whether through donations or simply by sharing this page - means the world to us. Together, we can recover, rebuild, and return stronger. "Thank you so much for your kindness and help." On Friday (20.06.25), the page had raised more than half of its £10,000 goal.

'Banana bridge' reopening after year-long closure
Bristol's so-called "banana bridge" will reopen at midday after £1.4m in repairs. Langton Street Bridge - given its nickname because of its shape and colour - was closed to pedestrians and cyclists in May 2024. The bridge's structure, masonry and decking have been repaired and a handrail installed. Its renovation was paid for from a £16m fund secured from the previous government for a programme of eight bridge repairs along the New Cut of the River Avon. Councillor Ed Plowden, chair of Bristol City Council's Transport and Connectivity Committee, said he was "delighted" the bridge is reopening. "The refurbishment has safe-guarded this Grade II listed structure for many years to come," he added. The council said the work had been completed five months earlier than scheduled, though the road closure on York Road continues while the sides of the New Cut are shored up. A group of local residents said a better approach to maintaining the bridges would be more monitoring of potential problems, to avoid so many routes over the river being shut for so long. Ed Hall, from Friends Of The New Cut, said: "They've not maintained this. They've allowed trees to grow along the edges of the New Cut. "These bridges are the major carbon-free ways that thousands and thousands of people use to cross the river." Bristol City Council has been contacted for comment. On this day in 2024: Peace Museum announces Salts Mill relocation plan
On this day in 2024, the Telegraph and Argus reported that a museum dedicated to peace was moving to a new home.
