Sharjah skies witness rare astronomical phenomenon called 22° Halo

Gulf Today26-04-2025

Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Astronomical Society and a member of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences, announced the appearance of a circular halo around the sun in the sky of Sharjah on Saturday afternoon, known as the 22° Halo.
Al Jarwan explained in a statement to Al Khaleej newspaper that this circular halo is an optical phenomenon resulting from the refraction of sunlight through ice crystals present in thin, high clouds, such as cirrus clouds.
He added that high clouds consist of hexagonal ice crystals and when sunlight passes through these crystals, it refracts at a specific angle (approximately 22 degrees).
As a result of this refraction, a circular ring of light appears around the sun (or the moon at night), referred to as the 22-Degree Halo.
Al Jarwan noted that this phenomenon may indicate changes in the weather, such as the approach of a low-pressure system or rainfall within a day or two, especially if followed by denser clouds.
"The circular halo around the sun was likely observed in several areas across the UAE, as high clouds generally covered most parts of the country during the day on Saturday," he added.
He also mentioned that the circular halo is usually white but sometimes has faint edges of red on the inside and violet on the outside, similar to the colours of a rainbow.

Arab Planetarium Society conducts workshops at SAASST

Throughout the year, the Arab Planetarium Society organises a wide range of specialized lectures, workshops, forums, training programs, and courses in the field of planetarium development, delivered by a distinguished group of Arab experts. The Society is committed to strengthening its partnerships with various institutions across the Arab region and enhancing its collaboration with the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences to achieve its mission of spreading astronomical knowledge. In this context, Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Director of SAASST, emphasised that the Arab Planetarium Society plays a vital role in promoting education in astronomy and space sciences in the Arab world. The Society effectively bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical applications, supports new generations of students and researchers, and contributes to the development of academic institutions in this field. Marwan Shwaiki, President of the Society, noted that the organization was established in 2020 under the patronage of Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, President of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences. He highlighted the Society's ongoing efforts to build collaborative ties with planetariums across Arab countries and to provide scientific and technical support to institutions involved in astronomy and space sciences. Shwaiki also underscored the importance of raising public awareness about the value of planetariums as educational tools.

UAE: When is Eid Al Adha? Likely first day of Dhul Hijjah revealed

Eid Al Adha, the festival of sacrifice, is just around the corner. The holiday falls on the ninth day of Dhul Hijjah and marks the end of the Hajj season. As the Islamic calendar is based on the lunar cycle, dates of holidays and other Islamic events depend on the sighting of the Moon. However, Ibrahim Al Jarwan, an astronomy expert, has predicted the day the festival will fall on, based on astronomical calculations. Al Jarwan, who is the Chairman of the Emirates Astronomical Society and member of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences, has said that the first day of Dhul Hijjah is likely to fall on Wednesday, May 28. This means that, on the basis of astronomical calculations, Friday, June 6, 2025, will be Eid Al Adha. Speaking to Arabic-language newspaper Emarat Al Youm, Jarwan said that the new Moon of Dhul Hijjah will be born on Tuesday, May 27 at 7.02am in the UAE. By sunset, the Moon will be above the horizon and will remain so for about 38 minutes — making it visible. He noted, however, that the official announcement of religious occasions is made by the relevant authorities in accordance with Islamic legal guidelines.

Sharjah: Rare 22° halo forms around Sun today; why it happened

Sharjah residents: Did you look up today? On Saturday afternoon, a wonderful phenomenon took over Sharjah's skies — the 22° halo. This optical phenomenon was a result of the refraction of sunlight through ice crystals found in high, thin clouds, such as cirrus clouds, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Astronomical Society, Ibrahim Al Jarwan said. Take a look at a photograph of the stunning spectacle below: How does this form a halo? Hexagonal ice crystals form these clouds. So, when sunlight gets refracted through those ice crystals a circular ring of light is created around the Sun. The angle — 22° — is the angular radius of the corona we see around the Sun, not the angle of refraction of the light. This phenomenon could also be an indication of changes in weather conditions, like an approaching low pressure system.
