Powerball winner and his girlfriend are arrested just days after pocketing $167.3M jackpot

Daily Mail02-05-2025

Just days after claiming a $167.3 million Powerball jackpot, a Kentucky man's dream turned into a legal nightmare on the sands of Florida.
James Farthing, 50, of Georgetown, Kentucky, was arrested early Wednesday morning at a St. Pete Beach resort following a late-night altercation that left him facing serious charges - including felony battery on a law enforcement officer.
Farthing, who won the jackpot with his mother, allegedly punched another guest in the face before he kicked a Pinellas County sheriff's deputy in the face while resisting arrest, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by the New York Post.
The incident occurred at the TradeWinds Island Grand Resort, a beachfront destination where Farthing and his girlfriend, Jacqueline Fightmaster, 42, were reportedly celebrating his life-changing lottery win.
Police were called to the resort bar around 11:10 pm after reports of a physical altercation between Farthing and another guest.
The already tense situation only escalated when officers tried to intervene, according to the arresting officer, WKYT reported.
Authorities said Farthing was intoxicated, uncooperative and aggressive, ultimately lashing out violently at law enforcement.
The deputy was reported to have swelling and redness on the right side of his face under his eye, according to the affidavit.
The jackpot winner now faces charges of battery on a law enforcement officer - a felony - and a pair of misdemeanors, resisting an officer without violence and battery.
In addition, officials in Kentucky have issued a warrant for violating his parole, which stems from prior convictions for theft and drug offenses.
Farthing was on parole through August 2025 for charges in Kentucky, WKYT reported.
His court records include convictions of tampering with evidence, engaging in organized crime, drug charges, receiving stolen property and theft by unlawful taking.
His girlfriend, Fightmaster, was also taken into custody on charges of public intoxication but has since been released.
Witnesses described her as verbally combative during the encounter.
'[Fightmaster] appeared very intoxicated and was yelling, screaming and making incoherent statements,' the affidavit alleged.
The Wednesday morning arrest comes on the heels of a highly publicized Powerball win that saw Farthing and his mother, Linda Grizzle, claim one of the largest jackpots in Kentucky history.
The $2 ticket was purchased at a Clark's Pump-N-Shop in Georgetown, where the pair was faced with the choice of receiving 30 annual payments or take the cash option of $77.3 million.
Grizzle told reporters earlier in the week that she had called her son immediately upon realizing they held the winning numbers.
'It's going to be a good Mother's Day,' she said. 'This is going to pay off my debt.'
Farthing, who was all smiles during the winner's announcement on Saturday, is now facing a far less glamorous spotlight as his court date in Florida is pending.
The 50-year-old Kentucky-native is being held on a $10,000 bond and jail records show he has $315 on his commissary account, according to WKYT.

The teenager also described a culture in which racist jokes were shared on class WhatsApp groups and white pupils asked black classmates for permission to use the N-word. In her article, she wrote: 'Racism and xenophobia are widespread in all years. Reflecting on my personal experience, I realise that I have always evolved in a school environment where racism persists.' She added that non-black students used the racial slur 'indiscriminately, whenever they want'.

Colorado man charged again with first degree murder of wife who went missing in 2020

A Colorado man suspected of killing his wife was charged Friday for the second time with first degree murder in her 2020 death, the Twelfth Judicial District Attorney's Office said in a release. Barry Morphew was previously charged with first degree murder, among other charges, in May 2021 in the killing of his wife, Suzanne Morphew, who was last seen on Mother's Day in 2020. But those charges were dropped without prejudice — meaning charges could be filed again at a later date — in April 2022 as prosecutors were closing in on finding the woman's remains. Officials took Morphew into custody Friday in Arizona, the District Attorney's office said, but the office is working to extradite the man back to the San Luis Valley in Colorado. It was not immediately clear whether Morphew is being held in jail or he has obtained legal representation. Iris Eytan, the attorney who represented Morphew in the earlier charges, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. It was not immediately clear if she is still representing him. Suzanne Morphew was last seen on May 10, 2020, near County Road 225 and West Highway 50 in Maysville, about 100 miles west of Colorado Springs. She was on a bike ride at the time. A 49-year-old mother of two, Suzanne Morphew was reported missing from her Chaffee County home that same day. Also that day, her mountain bike and helmet were discovered on the side of a county road in Salida, Colorado, near the family's home. Her husband had repeatedly denied his involvement in her death and pleaded not guilty to the initial charges. One week before Morphew was set to stand trial on the initial charge of first degree murder in his wife's disappearance, prosecutors dismissed the charges because they said they had zeroed in on an area where they believed her remains to be, but weather in the region was prohibiting officials from recovery efforts, slowing down the case. Suzanne Morphew's remains were finally uncovered in September 2023, officials said at the time. They were found during an unrelated search near Moffat in Saguache County. An April 2024 autopsy determined she died by homicide, which reported that drugs normally used as animal tranquilizers were found in her system. Suzanne Morphew "died as a result of homicide by unspecified means in the setting of butorphanol, azaperone, and medetomidine intoxication," the El Paso County coroner's report, obtained by NBC News at the time, said. "The drugs are marketed as a compound injectable chemical immobilizer for wildlife providing pharmacologically reversible analgesia, sedation, and immobilization," according to the report. Prosecutors had said they believed Morphew used a tranquilizer gun in his wife's murder. They had also said he was the only one with motive to kill Suzanne Morphew, because she was having an affair, believed her husband was having one, too, and had plans to file for divorce. Days before her disappearance, Suzanne Morphew texted her husband that their relationship was "done," according to the initial arrest affidavit from 2021. "Let's handle this civilly," she said, according to the affidavit. "It had become clear that Barry could not control Suzanne's insistence on leaving him, and he resorted to something he has done his entire life — hunt and control Suzanne like he had hunted and controlled animals," the affidavit said. Morphew also filed a $15 million lawsuit against authorities who accused him of killing his wife in May 2023. At the time, the couple's daughters spoke in support of their father. The District Attorney's office in the Friday release said the investigation into Suzanne Morphew's death has been ongoing. "Federal, State and local law enforcement have never stopped working toward justice for Suzanne," said Twelfth Judicial District Attorney Anne Kelly.

‘Unofficial Uber' driver guilty of kidnapping, attempted rape and sexual assault

Graham Head, 68, had latex gloves, condoms, Viagra tablets and a balaclava in his silver Mercedes estate when he was arrested in November 2022. In his home, business cards advertising him as a 'N-Uber driver' were emblazoned with the slogan 'Safe and Reliable – For All Occasions' underneath one of his phone numbers. In July 2023, Head, of Pevensey, East Sussex, was handed a 23-year sentence for the kidnap and attempted rape of a 25-year-old woman, along with assault by penetration of a 19-year-old woman. In November 2024, the Court of Appeal overturned the conviction following a complaint from Head relating to the judge who presided over the original trial. On Thursday, he was convicted of all charges again by a jury of seven men and five women after eight hours of deliberation at Lewes Crown Court. During the trial, jurors heard that Head was a 'sexual predator' who 'slipped up' the night he was arrested by police. He claimed that he offered the 25-year-old a lift home but did not touch her and never met his other alleged victim. Prosecutor Paul Jarvis KC said: 'The defendant is a sexual predator. Basing himself in Pevensey and ostensibly working as an unofficial Uber driver or taxi driver. 'He was also looking for vulnerable young women who he could sexually abuse. 'He carried Viagra and condoms with him, either on his person or in his car, as well as latex gloves. He would use the latex gloves to minimise the risk of leaving traces of his DNA on his victims.' Head had two mobile phones and was 'savvy enough' to know that if he kept them on while he was driving, the network provider could record his movements so kept them in flight mode while he was searching for victims, the court was told. The two attacks are said to have taken place in the early hours of August 19 2022, in Hove Park and November 18 2022 outside the alleged victim's home. Mr Jarvis said: 'Now in August 2022, she (the first victim) was 19 years old. When she was, we say, intoxicated and vulnerable in the early hours of the morning the defendant sexually assaulted her in Hove Park.' 'In November 2022, she (the second victim) was 25 years old. When she was also vulnerable and intoxicated in the early hours of the morning, Mr Head kidnapped her and sexually assaulted her in his car and then drove off leaving her distressed on the roadside. 'On both occasions, the defendant was driving his grey Mercedes estate motor vehicle with the registration number L21 GRH.' The 25-year-old was able to remember the 'L21' portion of Head's number plate, which led to police pulling his car over and arresting him the same night, jurors heard. 'He slipped up on November 19 2022 in two respects. First because his victim was alert enough to be able to memorise part of the licence plate for the police to be able to identify his car when they saw it,' said Mr Jarvis. The 25-year-old had been on a night out and had consumed alcohol and cocaine on the night in question, the court heard. Her account is that a man pulled up alongside her and told her he was an Uber driver who had just finished his shift but would give her a free ride home. Journeys from Middle Street, in Brighton, where the victim left Monarch Bar, to the victim's home address were found after analysis of the satnav in Head's Mercedes. Mr Jarvis continued: 'He offered to give her a life home but his real plan was to drive around until he was satisfied she was fast asleep so he could sexually assault and rape her. 'He drove close to her home address and tried to rape her in the back seat of his car but she came to and kicked him away.' The 25-year-old has since died and did not give evidence at the trial. Head will be sentenced on August 22 2025.
