The average Aussie household pays $84p/m for NBN, which is way too much IMHO
Cost of living pressures in the past few years have made everything more expensive, including groceries, petrol and, of course, everyday utilities like home broadband. And it's never been more true for the latter, with new research revealing that Aussies are overspending on their NBN plans.
ACCAN's Cost of Connectivity report calls for more affordable broadband, as findings show that almost a third of households spend over 5% of their income on a standard internet bundle, and almost half spend between 2-5% of their income on internet connectivity. ABS data shows the average Aussie salary is around AU$1,975.80 per week, which means some Aussies are forking out at least AU$98.79 (or more) on their monthly internet bill.
Out of the surveyed participants, the average household internet cost was AU$84p/m, which again, is rather exorbitant. To put this into perspective, AU$84p/m costs the same as the average NBN 50 plan, which is great for smaller households of up to 4 users, but not so much for the average family with multiple internet-connected devices.
Further, ACCAN's report found that some 14% of home internet consumers would accept slower download speeds to reduce their bills. This said, NBN Co has indicated that, by 2030, the average Australian household will have at least 40 internet-connected devices – so slower speeds than those currently offered through the NBN may not be viable in the future.
Finding the best NBN deals is my bread and butter, so I know better than most that it pays to shop around for a bangin' bargain on your internet bill — and I refuse to accept that you couldn't get better value on your NBN connection. There are plenty of great cheap NBN plans out there that don't compromise on speeds and service, and offer an insanely attractive price tag.
I've gathered three of my top-rated plans below, all costing under the AU$84p/m average, and overdeliver when it comes to speeds, service and savings. I am no magician, but when it comes to analysing NBN prices, I do have a few tricks up my sleeve. So to add some extra sparkle to the plans I've selected below, all offerings average less than AU$84p/m for the first year, even when the introductory discounts end. That's a huge win in my books.
So without further ado, let the savings begin!

SpinTel | NBN 250 | Unlimited data | No lock-in contract | AU$80p/m
Advertising 240Mbps download speeds during the typical evening hours, this SpinTel deal has slashed its introductory outlay completely, now AU$80p/m ongoing. The plan now provides pretty incredible value compared to other providers, as one of the cheapest NBN 250 plans, and it costs less than the average NBN 50 plan, for nearly 5x the speeds!
Do note, though, that this SpinTel plan is only available for addresses with FTTP and HFC connections.
Total minimum cost: AU$80 | Total yearly cost: AU$960
Mate | NBN 100 | Unlimited data | No lock-in contract | AU$60p/m using code FUTURE30 (for 6 months, then AU$90p/m)
Mate's NBN 100 plan is one of the most inexpensive offerings around, providing 97Mbps speeds during the typical evening hours. This plan is great for up to 4 users working from home, 4K streaming or gaming, and comes complete with unlimited data.
Using our exclusive code FUTURE30, you'll save AU$180 during the first six months with Mate. You'll even get a free subscription to sports streamer, Bein Sports, typically retailing at AU$14.99p/m. Plus, if you want to bundle a phone line, you can add a home voice plan and score an extra AU$10 off discount!
Total minimum cost: AU$60 | Total cost for first year: AU$900 | Yearly cost after discount: AU$1,080
TPG | NBN 100 | Unlimited data | No lock-in contract | AU$64.99p/m (for 6 months, then AU$94.99p/m)
If you're after a big three plan within the AU$84p/m budget, the options are far and few between. Right now, TPG has some pretty appealing offers on its NBN plans. Its 100Mbps plan is the cheapest compared to other major NBN operators like Optus and Telstra, costing just AU$64.99p/m for the first six months.
There is a slight catch, though; if you do require a modem, you'll need to pay AU$114.95 upfront for a TPG-supplied one. But for AU$180 total savings, this TPG plan is hard to pass up.
Total minimum cost: AU$64.99 | Total cost for first year: AU$959.88 | Yearly cost after discount: AU$1,139.88

'Roadblock': Paramount Stock (NASDAQ:PARA) Surges as the Trump Settlement Sputters
As it turns out, entertainment giant Paramount (PARA) was actually fairly close to a deal with President Trump over the 60 Minutes lawsuit. But, when the deal was fairly close, a 'roadblock' emerged and put a halt to the whole matter, at least for now. Investors reacted with surprising strength, and perhaps even more surprising positivity. Paramount shares gained nearly 2.5% in the closing minutes of Friday's trading. Confident Investing Starts Here: The settlement had reached $35 million, reports noted, when Paramount suddenly found itself paralyzed by indecision. That delay caused Trump lawyers to pivot and pull back to their original demand, calling for a $50 million settlement. The biggest problem seems to be that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is also involved in this, and needs to sign off on the merger with Skydance as well. Reports suggested that Paramount brass believes that the FCC's sign-off on the deal needs to be contingent on settling the case, but by like token, the idea that requiring FCC approval as part of the settlement looks a lot like a bribe. Trump's legal team, reports note, has already been clear that the Trump suit and the FCC case are two separate matters. But with outside organizations looking to launch their own lawsuits should the settlement go through, looks may count for more here than anyone expected. South Park Losses Mount Meanwhile, as Paramount faces the prospect of losing South Park exclusivity, it quietly pulled another old episode from the field. The pull this time showed up in the Canadian and Australian markets, reports noted, and this time, featured Butters' Very Own Episode pulled from Paramount+. Why, however, is a bit of a mystery. Several South Park episodes are apparently a bit too spicy for streaming, in retrospect, with around a dozen classic episodes set to be pulled from the catalog and relegated to a 'ban list', reports noted. The reports got stranger as an Australian viewer noted that the Paramount+ listing had been pulled, but the episode could still be watched by watching through Paramount+ on Amazon (AMZN) Prime Video. Is Paramount Stock a Good Buy Right Now? Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Hold consensus rating on PARA stock based on two Buys, eight Holds and five Sells assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. After a 18.62% rally in its share price over the past year, the average PARA price target of $12.08 per share implies 2.23% downside risk.

Should You Invest in AngloGold Ashanti (AU) Based on Bullish Wall Street Views?
Investors often turn to recommendations made by Wall Street analysts before making a Buy, Sell, or Hold decision about a stock. While media reports about rating changes by these brokerage-firm employed (or sell-side) analysts often affect a stock's price, do they really matter? Let's take a look at what these Wall Street heavyweights have to say about AngloGold Ashanti (AU) before we discuss the reliability of brokerage recommendations and how to use them to your advantage. AngloGold Ashanti currently has an average brokerage recommendation (ABR) of 2.00, on a scale of 1 to 5 (Strong Buy to Strong Sell), calculated based on the actual recommendations (Buy, Hold, Sell, etc.) made by six brokerage firms. An ABR of 2.00 indicates Buy. Of the six recommendations that derive the current ABR, three are Strong Buy and one is Buy. Strong Buy and Buy respectively account for 50% and 16.7% of all recommendations. Check price target & stock forecast for AngloGold Ashanti here>>> While the ABR calls for buying AngloGold Ashanti, it may not be wise to make an investment decision solely based on this information. Several studies have shown limited to no success of brokerage recommendations in guiding investors to pick stocks with the best price increase potential. Do you wonder why? As a result of the vested interest of brokerage firms in a stock they cover, their analysts tend to rate it with a strong positive bias. According to our research, brokerage firms assign five "Strong Buy" recommendations for every "Strong Sell" recommendation. This means that the interests of these institutions are not always aligned with those of retail investors, giving little insight into the direction of a stock's future price movement. It would therefore be best to use this information to validate your own analysis or a tool that has proven to be highly effective at predicting stock price movements. Zacks Rank, our proprietary stock rating tool with an impressive externally audited track record, categorizes stocks into five groups, ranging from Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) to Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell), and is an effective indicator of a stock's price performance in the near future. Therefore, using the ABR to validate the Zacks Rank could be an efficient way of making a profitable investment decision. In spite of the fact that Zacks Rank and ABR both appear on a scale from 1 to 5, they are two completely different measures. Broker recommendations are the sole basis for calculating the ABR, which is typically displayed in decimals (such as 1.28). The Zacks Rank, on the other hand, is a quantitative model designed to harness the power of earnings estimate revisions. It is displayed in whole numbers -- 1 to 5. Analysts employed by brokerage firms have been and continue to be overly optimistic with their recommendations. Since the ratings issued by these analysts are more favorable than their research would support because of the vested interest of their employers, they mislead investors far more often than they guide. On the other hand, earnings estimate revisions are at the core of the Zacks Rank. And empirical research shows a strong correlation between trends in earnings estimate revisions and near-term stock price movements. Furthermore, the different grades of the Zacks Rank are applied proportionately across all stocks for which brokerage analysts provide earnings estimates for the current year. In other words, at all times, this tool maintains a balance among the five ranks it assigns. Another key difference between the ABR and Zacks Rank is freshness. The ABR is not necessarily up-to-date when you look at it. But, since brokerage analysts keep revising their earnings estimates to account for a company's changing business trends, and their actions get reflected in the Zacks Rank quickly enough, it is always timely in indicating future price movements. In terms of earnings estimate revisions for AngloGold Ashanti, the Zacks Consensus Estimate for the current year has increased 13.9% over the past month to $4.91. Analysts' growing optimism over the company's earnings prospects, as indicated by strong agreement among them in revising EPS estimates higher, could be a legitimate reason for the stock to soar in the near term. The size of the recent change in the consensus estimate, along with three other factors related to earnings estimates, has resulted in a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) for AngloGold Ashanti. You can see the complete list of today's Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) stocks here >>>> Therefore, the Buy-equivalent ABR for AngloGold Ashanti may serve as a useful guide for investors.
