Shane McEntee on Meath v Cork: ‘I thought there was a clear difference in football ability'
Former Meath captain Shane McEntee believes Cork's limited kick-out options and technical ability were the difference in their All-Ireland SFC Group 2 encounter last weekend.
Speaking on the Irish Examiner's Gaelic football podcast, McEntee was content with his county's ability to shake off their provincial final hangover and secure a four-point victory. He pointed to two issues that were costly for John Cleary's side.
'I'll go with two key things here. They started their kick-outs quite well. Cork have done this a long time. They set up pods, nothing too glamorous about it. They overload one side of the field.
'Ian Maguire for example, he'll call the kick-out on him, he will shape that, 'this is my ball, I'm going for it.' His midfield buddy or wing-forward knows that he isn't really. Maguire backs into Bryan Menton for example and someone else comes in to win it. Cork won five of their first seven kick-outs in the first half into the gale. But that was all that they had from a kick-out perspective.
'The only variation was instead of them all straight away going to the wing, they would start in the middle. One fella would go one way, the rest to the other. Meath just got to grips with it. Menton in particular.' Cork were three points down at the turnaround having played against the wind, but Cork could not do enough in the second half. They now face a huge tie against Kerry at home this weekend.
'Conditions weren't terrible to begin with, there was a wind and it was greasy, but the heavens opened in the second half. I thought there was a clear difference in football ability.
'Meath had a number of fellas when the pressure was on, you needed someone to carry ball and make something happen, Matt Costello, Ciaran Caulfield, Sean Coffey, Cathal Hickey came on and made a difference, Jordy Morris was dangerous, Meath had a load of ball carriers and ball players. They could handle the ball in pressure situations.
'Cork did not seem to have the same ability to execute under that pressure. I'm not going to pick out an individual, that wasn't the case, they just didn't seem as a team to be able for that.'

Glen Dimplex All Ireland Camogie Intermediate Championship: Kerry 2-20 Kildare 0-4 Kerry crushed Kildare to cruise into the All-Ireland Intermediate Camogie Championship semi-finals as group winners in this one sided contest played in the Austin Stack Park. Kerry exploded out of the blocks with a dominant and clinical opening 23 minutes against Kildare, led by the outstanding Patrice Diggin. From the very first minute, Diggin signaled her intent with a superb long-range point to get the scoreboard ticking. A minute later, she calmly converted a free from near the left sideline after Jackie Horgan was fouled. There was no let up as Diggin added two more quickfire points, one from play and another fine effort from distance, giving Kerry a commanding early four point lead. Ann Marie Leen joined the scoring with a neat point in the 10th minute, before Diggin again showcased her range with yet another score from distance. Horgan then got on the board herself following a slick team move, expertly set up by Diggin. The pressure on Kildare was relentless, with Diggin adding another free and a further long-range effort to bring her personal tally to seven points. The momentum built to a crescendo in the 23rd minute when Ellen O'Donoghue sliced through the Kildare defence. Her shot was blocked, but a scramble in the square ended with Kate Lynch nudging the sliotar over the line, putting Kerry into a 1-9 to no score lead going into the dressing rooms. Lynch ignited the second half with a blistering strike to the top right corner, netting her second goal and pushing Kerry to a 2-9 to no score lead. Kildare finally got on the scoreboard in the 33rd minute with a well-taken 45 from Caoimhe Ní Bhuircéal, but it was a mere dent in Kerry's dominance. Diggin continued to orchestrate the attack, converting another close-range free before the half ended. Points followed in rapid succession from Jackie Horgan, Ann Marie Leen, and Ellen O'Donoghue, with Diggin deadly accurate from placed balls throughout. A disallowed goal in the 40th minute for a foul on the Kildare net minder Ellen Donovan, after Shannon Collins got the final touch to the net, did little to disrupt Kerry's rhythm. They simply pushed on, with further scores from Ruth O'Connor, Niamh Leen, and Horgan ensuring the scoreboard kept ticking. Cork defeat Clare by nine parts after a strong second half performance
Glen Dimplex All-Ireland senior camogie championship: Cork 0-21 Clare 1-9 Cork's winning streak in the Glen Dimplex All-Ireland senior camogie championship continued in SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday. A nine-point winning margin was achieved after a strong second-half performance. The victory for Ger Manley's outfit means they head into the final round of fixtures next Saturday against winless Wexford top of Group 1 and in the perfect position to take a semi-final spot. Indication of their squad depth was also highlighted by the unavailability of Hannah Looney and Aoife Healy due to football commitments. However, the hosts didn't get matters entirely their own way having led by three points at the break. Bear in mind too when these teams met in the Munster championship in April Clare lost 2-22 to 0-10. It was evident from the outset the Banner women were up for the challenge and John Carmody's youthful side were competitive. Factor in also, two one-on-one goal opportunities in second-half stoppage time from Róisín Begley and Áine O'Loughlin that were bravely saved by Cork 'keeper Amy Lee. But for now, the visitors will travel home having secured a championship knockout place in Croke Park and that has to be the first box ticked. Their game against Tipperary next weekend will determine whether they finish second or third. They got a tonic start with a green flag inside the opening minute from Jennifer Daly who soloed through from out the field and applied the finishing touches after a mere 45 seconds. The only goal of the day was immediately followed by a Caoimhe Cahill point from play and they were up-and-running.
