UFC ace Paul Craig to embark on gruelling Help for Heroes charity bike ride

Paul Craig will take part in Help for Heroes Battlefield Bike Ride just days after a major fight
UFC star Paul Craig is embarking on a 250-mile bike ride just days after taking on Rodolfo Bellato at UFC Atlanta.
The Airdrie 37-year-old lands on Sunday from the US and heads straight to Buckingham Palace on Monday, to take part in the Help for Heroes Battlefield Bike Ride.

The route, from the palace in London to Rheine in Germany from June 16 to 21 is the path that World War II Allies took over five days, and marks the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

Craig originally had a month between his fight and the challenge, but the bout against Bellato in May was postponed 30 minute before when his Brazilian opponent had 'facial herpes'.
Instead, the two go head-to-head in the US tonight.
The popular fighter said: 'We're straight into a charity bike ride. I was meant to have that on May 17, so that would give me enough time.
'Because the fight was moved, I have to do the fight and then the five-day bike ride.
'It's from Buckingham Palace to Germany, and it's the route that the soldiers from World War II would have taken.

'It was a great idea when I signed up for it and there was a month's buffer between the fight and this, but the last thing I want to do is pull out from this.
'I think it's a great opportunity, not only for me but to help a charity.'
Craig was moments away from taking part in UFC Vegas last month.

He said: 'We were in our fight kit, in our gloves. Our hands were wrapped up, the commission had already taped off our hands, signed off our gloves, all that sort of stuff.
'Then the head of the UFC comes in and there are only a few things that can see the UFC brass in your locker room – you've messed up, or somebody else has messed up, and it was the latter, so the fight was pulled.
'At that moment you're already switched on to go to war, and then it's about switching back off, so there were all these emotions in my head.
'We had worked so hard for 10 weeks to be ready for a fight, and not to get the outcome is horrible.
'But that's part of this sport, part of being an athlete.'

Dana White makes public donation appeal to support Ben Askren with former MMA fighter needing life-saving lung transplant after severe pneumonia fight

Dana White has issued a public appeal in support of Ben Askren, who remains in hospital after being diagnosed with severe pnuemonia earlier this month. Askren, 40, was hospitalised after contracting pneumonia as a result of a staph infection and he now requires a life-saving lung transplant. He was unresponsive last week but alive, despite claims circulating online that he had died. Askren was transferred to his home town of Wisconsin to receive treatment, according to UFC commentator and former two-division champion Daniel Cormier. This came after Askren's wife, Amy Askren, provided an update on his concerning condition, saying he was bed-bound in care. She revealed earlier this week that her husband remains in hospital on a ventilator. 'His body can't handle coming off sedation too much yet,' she posted on Facebook. 'I'm still praying for a miracle with his current lungs, but they are currently starting the evaluation process for a lung transplant.' UFC CEO White is hopeful kind-hearted UFC fans will be able to donate, and he shared the link to the fundraiser with his 10.5million Instagram followers. 'Click the link to help Ben Askren,' White said. According to the National Institutes of Health, the cost of a lung transplant in the United States ranges from $300,000 (£222,915) to $400,000 (£297,220). Askren retired from MMA in 2019 after a three-fight stint with the UFC. He made his MMA debut in 2009 after a decorated collegiate wrestling career that saw him become a two-time NCAA division 1 champion. The 2008 Olympian would go on a decade-long undefeated streak inside the cage, winning world titles in Bellator and ONE and was widely regarded as one of the best fighters in the world outside the UFC. Despite a fractious relationship with White, Askren would make his Octagon debut in 2019 after a trade deal involving former flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson. Amy shared an update on social media and revealed that there are 'good days and bad' After defeating Robbie Lawler in his UFC debut, Askren suffered back-to-back losses against Jorge Masvidal and Demian Maia before announcing his retirement. Despite undergoing major hip surgery after hanging up his gloves, Askren later returned to competition, losing to Jake Paul via first-round TKO in a boxing match.

Tom Aspinall installed as UFC champion after Jon Jones confirms retirement

Britain's Tom Aspinall has been upgraded to UFC undisputed heavyweight champion following the official retirement of Jon Jones. UFC president Dana White ended months of uncertainty in the heavyweight division by delivering the news after Saturday's Fight Night in Azerbaijan. Advertisement Aspinall spent 19 months as interim champion and is only the third Briton to become a UFC champion. American Jones – considered one of the greatest mixed martial arts fighters of all time – had not competed since defeating Stipe Miocic in November. 'Jon Jones called us last night and retired,' White said. 'Jon Jones is officially retired. Tom Aspinall is the heavyweight champion of the UFC. Advertisement 'Do I regret the time that I gave (Jones to decide)? Listen, if you look at what he's accomplished in the sport, no.' Aspinall had unsuccessfully campaigned to fight 37-year-old Jones. Reacting to the news, the 32-year-old, who last fought in July, posted on Instagram: 'For you fans, it's time to get this heavyweight division going. An active undisputed champion.' Aspinall is expected to defend his title this summer or in early autumn, with number-one contender Ciryl Gane a likely opponent. 'I obviously feel bad for Tom that he lost all that time and obviously money, but we'll make it up to him,' said White. 'Tom Aspinall's a good guy. He's been incredible through this whole process. 'He's been willing to do anything, fight him (Jones) anywhere at any time and do this, and now he's like 'I'll fight anybody – you tell me who and I'll fight them'.'

Derry City move 'too good to turn down', says Adam Frizzell as he opens up on emotional Airdrie exit

The midfielder is ready for a new challenge in his career after leaving the Diamonds Airdrie hero Adam Frizzell admits he got emotional after leaving the Diamonds this week, but says the chance of playing European football with Derry City is too good to turn down. The midfielder has called time on a four-year spell at New Broomfield after the League of Ireland Premier Division side managed to entice him overseas. ‌ While Scottish football is preparing to kick-off for another season, the Irish League is just over the halfway point in their campaign and Derry sit fourth, aiming to land a spot in the top three to secure Europa Conference League football next term. ‌ And that has proved too big a draw for the former Kilmarnock ace, who agreed to join Derry just days after tying the knot with wife Erin in Italy earlier this month. The 27-year-old, who will be officially unveiled in the next 48 hours, told Lanarkshire Live Sport: "It's very bitter sweet. Reading everyone's messages after the club announced I was leaving, I am gutted about it. I was a wee bit emotional. "It is a really close-knit, family club and one I hold close to my heart. "Airdrie is a club I love. I have been part of the furniture for four years. I have been doing coaching as well so I have got to know a lot of the staff and fans on a personal level. "It is really sad leaving, but this is something I can't turn down and my focus is on Derry now. "I just got married in the summer as well so there's a lot of big changes. I got married in Italy and we went to Venice for a couple of days after it, so we'll wait until the winter break in the Irish league to go on a proper honeymoon. ‌ "I've been trying to run off the pasta and wine for the past week, but I have been keeping myself in shape. "I said to them I'd go and enjoy the wedding and then see what happens after that. "When I came back, the opportunity presented itself and I had to go and challenge myself. ‌ "Now I want to get over to Ireland, get sorted and get my head down. That is my main focus at the moment." Derry are currently fourth in the League of Ireland, two points behind third place Bohemians, three behind Drogheda United (who have played two games more) and 14 adrift of leaders Shamrock Rovers. ‌ So Frizzell is looking forward to getting stuck straight into a new challenge and chasing a first taste of European football. He said: "I don't think a lot of people know much about the Irish league but it is very competitive. It is packed out every week and Derry is a club on the up, looking to play in Europe. "Derry are looking to get that second or third spot. They are halfway through the season and Shamrock have a wee gap at the moment. ‌ "When I spoke to their manager Tiernan [Lynch], he really sold it. I am really looking forward to a new challenge. "I just thought it was the right time for me. I am coming into what you would say are my prime years and it is something I had to jump at. ‌ "I have left Airdrie on good terms and who knows what can happen in the future. "But this is very exciting. I have done it the hard way to get here. After Kilmarnock I had a lot of injuries and I was on a bit of a rocky road to build myself back up. "I am so thankful for Airdrie helping me do that. I had four great years there. We won a trophy - something the club hadn't done for a number of years - and to do that as captain was a real honour for me. "It is no secret how much I love the club, but it is a chance for me to step up and potentially play in Europe. It is something I couldn't turn down."
