
Rough ride: how Uber quietly took more of your fare with its algorithm change
More than a decade after being one of 19 Uber drivers who took the company to court in 2015, Abdurzak Hadi continues to drive for – and fight with – the ride hailing app.
The group won their claim confirming their entitlement to the legal minimum wage – but the Silicon Valley company's insistence that its drivers were self-employed contractors meant the case went all the way to the supreme court. In 2021, Hadi and friends won there too.
If that sounds as if the British legal system left the former Somalian refugee in the driving seat, he argues that life for Uber workers is now as precarious as ever.
On Thursday, academics at the University of Oxford – in conjunction with the non-profit gig worker organisation Worker Info Exchange (WIE) – launched a report analysing a mass of data relating to 1.5m trips provided by 258 UK Uber drivers, who had used privacy legislation to extract their personal data from the ride hailing app.
The study gave a rare opportunity to study the workings of Uber's technology and produced some eye-catching findings.
It found that many Uber drivers have earned 'substantially less' an hour since the ride hailing app introduced a 'dynamic pricing' algorithm in 2023, which is said to adjust trip prices in real time based on a number of factors. These include time, distance, the number of available drivers in the area, the passenger demand, traffic and the weather. The paper found that these earnings drops coincided with the company taking a significantly higher share of fares.
The study unearthed further data suggesting that drivers such as Hadi are experiencing less and less control over their working lives. They described their days as being controlled by increasingly sophisticated pieces of computer code, which left them unclear how much Uber would take in fees on discrete jobs.
'[The old system] was clear, transparent,' Hadi told the Guardian and ITV News. 'You can calculate, you can see. Say, for example here it says about eight miles, so I know eight miles plus how long it took me, plus the starting fare, minus Uber's fee, which is 20%. Even when they increased it to 25%, I would exactly know how much. Exactly.'
The new system has resulted in Uber taking a variable cut, or 'take rate', of 29% of a fare on average, rising to more than 50% in some cases, the University of Oxford researchers found. The paper also found that Uber's take rate increased on higher value rides – something the company has denied.
The 29% figure appears to chime with disclosures within Uber's latest quarterly results figures, which show that the company made $1.2bn of income from its operations (about £887m) in the first three months of this year. Meanwhile, the WIE estimates that UK Uber drivers lost out on $1.6bn in pay as a result of Uber increasing its share of the fare, during the 12 months to March 2025.
Uber said the UK take rate and lost earnings figures are inaccurate, and that its take rate had remained 'steady' at 25%. The company added: 'The Uber app reviews real-time information to provide the best price to appeal to the drivers in the area, helping to minimise waiting times for customers and maximise earnings. Drivers are shown their earnings for the trip before they decide whether to accept.'
But as Uber grows more confident in its calculations, those transporting passengers say they are becoming less so.
A driver's livelihood depends on their ability to guess what kinds of trips they will get at particular times and places, and how much those trips will pay.
However, the University of Oxford study stated that 'drivers frequently complained about the unpredictability of pay post-dynamic pricing'. The paper continued: 'Any tacit knowledge drivers have built up over years about how much pay a given trip is likely to yield may no longer help them … the predictability of pay drastically changed after dynamic pricing was introduced.'
An company spokesperson said: 'Uber drivers in the UK took home over £1bn in earnings between January and March of this year, which is up on the year before. Drivers choose to drive with Uber because we offer total flexibility on when they work and provide full transparency over the trips they accept.
'All drivers receive a weekly summary of their earnings, which includes a clear breakdown of what Uber and the driver received from trips. We are proud that thousands of drivers continue to make the positive choice to work on Uber as passenger demand and trips continue to grow.'

Taxpayers hand over £8bn more as Reeves's raids kick in
Taxpayers have forked out an extra £8.6bn in just two months as Rachel Reeves' Budget starts to bite, new figures show. Data from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) shows that tax receipts hit £142.8bn for April and May, a rise of more than 6pc compared to the same period last year. Almost £3 in every additional £4 raised came from income tax and National Insurance, alongside increased revenue from capital gains and inheritance tax. Tax expert Rachel Griffin called the increase 'another chapter in the Government's stealth tax strategy', while retirement specialist Stephen Lowe said Labour's 'tax train showed absolutely no signs of running out of steam'. In her maiden Budget in October, the Chancellor raised employers' National Insurance contributions from 13.8pc to 15pc and reduced the salary at which they become due from £9,100 to £5,000. She also retained the Conservatives' plans to freeze income tax thresholds. The moves came despite Labour's manifesto promise not to raise taxes on working people. As a result of the changes, HMRC received an extra £6.1bn in revenue for the two measures over April and May compared to last year, with £3.6bn in additional income tax and another £2.5bn in National Insurance contributions. Ms Griffin, of Quilter, said: 'HMRC's latest figures for May 2025 mark another chapter in the Government's stealth-tax strategy. Despite no new headline tax rises, receipts continue to climb thanks to frozen thresholds and slashed allowances. 'With income tax thresholds still frozen, many workers are paying a larger share of their earnings in tax simply due to modest pay rises, even when those increases fail to match inflation. 'This month's figures also capture the first full month's impact of the April changes to employer National Insurance contributions. While the policy may help shore up the public finances, it could also influence hiring decisions and wage growth in the months ahead.' There was also a £97m increase in inheritance tax receipts. The amount is expected to increase quickly next year after the Chancellor's decision to halve agricultural and business property relief after the first £1m of assets. From April 2027, pensions will also be considered for inheritance tax. Mr Lowe, of Just Group, said: 'The Treasury's inheritance tax revenues continue to surge with this tax train showing absolutely no signs of running out of steam through the first couple of months in this financial year. 'The reforms announced at the autumn Budget, which included further extending the threshold freeze and tightening the exemptions for pension wealth, will likely tip more estates into paying the tax and further boost the Chancellor's coffers.' There was also an increase of £106m in capital gains receipts, which have continued to rise following changes implemented in October last year. The Chancellor increased the lower rate from 10pc to 18pc and the higher rate from 20pc to 24pc for shares and other non-property assets. Richard Bate, of law firm Weightmans, said: 'With inheritance tax thresholds frozen and key reliefs due to be curtailed from 2026, families and business owners are acting early – restructuring their estates while current capital gains tax rates and allowances remain in place. 'But in doing so, many are facing an unwelcome double tax hit – capital gains tax now, followed by potential inheritance tax later if planning isn't carefully managed.'

Meghan Markle was praised for her 'clarity, conviction and honestly genuine wisdom' today by entrepreneur Emma Grede after they sat down for a 90-minute podcast. Grede hailed the Duchess of Sussex for 'building something with purpose, precision and with a lot of heart' as she lauded her in a follow-up video on Instagram last night. The British businesswoman, a founding partner of Kim Kardashian 's shapewear brand Skims, spoke to Meghan for her Aspire podcast which came out on Tuesday. Their chat saw Meghan say she would 'ask people to tell the truth' if she was able to rewrite her public narrative from scratch and refer to a 'lie' told eight years ago. The Duchess also used the podcast to deny that her personal Instagram account, where she shares behind the scenes footage of family life, is a tool to promote her business – adding that she uses it for 'authentic' sharing such as her twerking video. The interview was released three days before Meghan's As Ever brand is due to restock and launch new products later today at 8am Pacific Time (4pm UK time). Reflecting on the podcast, Grede said: 'When I sat down with Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, I expected a great conversation, but what I didn't expect was how much clarity, conviction and honestly genuine wisdom that she brought to the table. Grede, who co-founded denim company Good American, added: 'Meghan doesn't just talk about building a brand - she's building something with purpose, precision and with a lot of heart. And there were a few moments that really stayed with me.' She cited the first one as being 'trust your timeline', praising Meghan for saying 'someone else's urgency is not my urgency'. Grede said 'She's not rushing to meet outside expectations. She's building with care on her own terms, and that discipline shows in every move that she makes.' That was four years ago so it's also a really great reminder that with all the noise or whatever people do, there's still whole life, a real, authentic, fun life that's happening behind the scenes,' Meghan said. 'I'm just grateful that now, being back on social as well, I have a place where I can share it on my own terms.' She added: 'It feels liberating.' Grede asked Meghan: 'Would you ever do something just for the money?' Meghan replied: 'I have turned down a lot of opportunities that do not feel value-aligned. 'It's very easy to say no, no matter the price, if you aren't gonna be able to sleep well at night.' The Duchess was also asked whether she any sense of imposter syndrome, but she said she had no fear of failure. 'I don't feel imposter syndrome. I feel like I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be right now,' Meghan said. She added: 'I don't see the possibility of failure, not when you can learn from everything you've done.' Meghan also said she wanted to speak to Grede about diversifying her own brand into fashion at some stage. The Duchess said: 'I think there'll certainly be a time for fashion. You and I can talk about that later.' She also claimed in the podcast that she struggled to get acting roles early in her career because she is mixed race. Meghan told how she would get plenty of auditions but was regularly rejected by directors - which was a 'lot to chip away at your self-esteem'. The former actress, who eventually rose to fame in US legal drama Suits from 2011, said she was often put forward for 'girl next door' roles because she was 'half white'. But she said these characters were 'typically blond-haired, blue-eyed and a certain look' – and if they 'had any sort of ethnicity, there was always a bit of an edge'.
