India saved its satellites from collision 11 times in 2024, according to Isro's Indian Space Situational Assessment Report (ISSAR) report.
The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) in the report said that it saved six satellites in the low-Earth orbit (LEO) and four in the geostationary orbit (GEO) from collision. The Isro also said that it prevented the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter from a planetary collision.
The Isro said that an orbit maintenance manoeuvre was originally scheduled for Chandrayaan-2 on November 26, 2024, but it was advanced to Nov. 11 to mitigate conjunctions with Nasa's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), which were predicted to occur on Nov. 15-16.

The Isro prevents such collisions by performing collision avoidance manoeuvres (CAM). These are planned changes in a spacecraft or a satellite's trajectory in space to avoid running into some other space object, which can be a body in the space, satellites, or debris from other satellites.
The Isro performs such manoeuvres after conducting Space Situational Awareness (SSA) assessments to see whether an object in the space is going to be in the close vicinity of a spacecraft or a satellite. Such objects can include space debris, natural objects like asteroids and meteoroids, and energy and particle flux.

Isro's System for Safe and Sustainable Operations Management (IS4OM) functions as the nodal entity for all space sustainability efforts, including SSA assessments and to improve compliance with internationally-recognised guidelines on the long-term sustainability of outer space activities.
Isro in the report said that it conducts analyses to predict close approaches by other space objects to Indian space assets. In case of any critical close approach, CAMs are carried out to rule out or minimise the collision risk. Last year, the Isro said that the Combatant Space Operations Center of the US Space Command had issued more than 53,000 alerts Isro's Earth-orbiting satellites. These alerts were analysed using more accurate orbital data from flight dynamics and 11 collision avoidance manoeuvres were conducted — as mentioned above.

The Isro released the following graph to show the CAMs conducted in recent years:

The number of CAMs was less in 2024 compared to the previous year because improved close approach analysis methodology with larger conjunction screening volume and usage of more accurate ephemerides helped to meet collision avoidance requirements by adjusting orbit maintenance manoeuvres on several occasions and avoiding exclusive CAMs, according to Isro.
Last year, the Isro said, all manoeuvre plans, including those of the CAMs, were subjected to close approach risk analysis to rule out any potential close approach with other neighbouring space objects imminently after the manoeuvres. In doing so, the report said that 89 manoeuvre plans were revised to avoid post-manoeuvre close approaches with other space objects for LEO satellites and on two occasions manoeuvre plans were revised such for GEO satellites.

The government is allowing more people to work in space science. Private entities and consortium of firms are being allowed to launch their satellites. Since the start of the space programme for non-military purpose in October 1957, ISRO has leapfrogged in space technology to indigenously develop different launch pads and launch a number of satellites, he said. 'NavIC, the country's own satellite-based navigation system developed by ISRO, is helping fishermen to navigate through sea in a safe way and find fish. With the feed from satellites and other information, there is advance information about cyclones, which has helped government to evacuate and save lives of people from places that are likely to be affected,' he said. The feed from satellites is also helping forecast crop yield. The use of satellites in hitting precise targets in enemy nation was demonstrated in the recent Operation Sindoor, he said. The youth, he said, are left with lot of problems to solve. 'You have tremendous capability. Rise and lead the country to regain the glory as the place of harmony and peace,' he said.

Mysterious "Dead" Satellite Sends Powerful Signal to Earth After Decades

Scientists received a mysterious radio pulse that came from a satellite that had been dead for decades. The signal was so powerful that for a moment it outshone all other objects in the sky, New Scientist reported. The radio pulse was blasted from a defunct satellite, Relay 2, which was a NASA experimental communications satellite launched in 1964. It was part of the Relay programme, which consisted of two satellites, Relay 1 and Relay 2, designed to test communications in medium Earth orbit. Both satellites were funded by NASA. The US-based space agency stopped using it in 1965, and the technical and electronic devices stopped working altogether by 1967. Last year on June 13, scientists using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) detected a small but powerful flash that lasted less than 30 nanoseconds. Clancy James at Curtin University in Australia and his colleagues were shocked as the signal came from our galaxy. "If it's nearby, we can study it through optical telescopes really easily, so we got all excited, thinking maybe we'd discovered a new pulsar or some other object," says Clancy as quoted by New Scientist. "This was an incredibly powerful radio pulse that vastly outshone everything else in the sky for a very short amount of time," Clancy added. Scientists studied the source and found that the signal came from within 20,000km of Earth. After comparing it with the locations of known satellites, they found that the pulse came from the Relay 2 satellite. As the satellite has been dead for nearly six decades, scientists believe that the signal must have come from an external factor, such as an electrostatic discharge or a micrometeorite. Either it was a spark-like flash that originated from a build-up of electricity, or it was a plasma discharge following a micrometeoroid impact. "In a world where there is a lot of space debris and there are more small, low-cost satellites with limited protection from electrostatic discharge (ESD), this radio detection may ultimately offer a new technique to evaluate electrostatic discharges in space," Karen Aplin at the University of Bristol, UK, said as quoted. The research, whose preprint is available on arXiv, has been accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal.
