Two family offices set up in Forest City SFZ as 30 more firms eye Johor investment hub
KUALA LUMPUR, April 23 — Forest City's Special Financial Zone (SFZ) in Johor Baru has welcomed its first two family offices — CMY Capital Family Office and Yow Kee Family Office — and is attracting growing investor interest, with 30 other companies expressing intent to establish operations there.
Johor Investment, Trade, Consumer Affairs and Human Resources Committee chairman Lee Ting Han said both family offices have obtained approval from the Securities Commission Malaysia, according to a report published today in The Edge.
To qualify for the zone's 0 per cent tax incentive, family offices must manage a minimum of RM30 million in assets and receive SC approval.
In a statement by Forest City developer Country Garden Pacificview Sdn Bhd, Lee revealed that 19 of the interested companies are from Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.
Forest City, developed by Country Garden Pacificview — a joint venture between China's Country Garden Holdings Co Ltd and Esplanade Danga 88 Sdn Bhd — is part of the larger Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) aimed at boosting investment.
Incentives for companies in the SFZ include a corporate tax rate of 0 to 5 per cent, and a flat 15 per cent income tax for knowledge-based workers.
Lee noted that while the Ministry of Finance is still formalising these incentives, applications are currently being assessed on a case-by-case basis to expedite approvals.
Tailored incentive packages are also being offered to major investors.
To support businesses, the Invest Malaysia Facilitation Centre Johor (IMFCJ) was launched as a one-stop centre offering coordination between investors and relevant authorities.
Since January 2025, the IMFCJ has managed over 250 investment-related enquiries.

UTM trio develops 24-hour self-service printing solution
JOHOR BAHRU: What began as a trivial issue - printing assignments outside regular hours - became the driving force behind an innovative venture by three Universiti Teknologi Malaysia students, who developed PrintTEX, a self-service kiosk offering round-the-clock printing access. Through their startup, Uninet Teknologi Enterprise, the trio from the Faculty of Computing and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering – Fikri Akmal Aizuddin Bahrim, 23, as Chief Executive Officer; Iqmal Aizat Mohd Zamri, 23, as Chief Technology Officer; and Low Lie Xin, 25, as Chief Operating Officer – began operating the kiosk in December 2023. Fikri Akmal Aizuddin, a final-year computer science student, said the kiosk is complemented by the PrintTEX mobile app, which offers on-demand printing services with rates as low as RM0.20 for black and white and RM0.45 for colour prints. 'The PrintTEX app comes with several handy features, such as users being able to find the nearest kiosk, upload documents and make payments online. 'Users just need to install the app, upload their documents, make a minimum payment of RM3, and then head to the kiosk to scan the QR code and print straight away,' he said when met by Bernama here.\ Fikri Akmal Aizuddin said they first developed a basic prototype or minimum viable product (MVP) in August 2023 using their own funds, which covered development costs, hardware such as printers, storage systems and other electronic components. He shared that with full support from the UTM Centre for Student Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship, his team successfully secured RM30,000 from the Malaysian Technology Development Corporation (MTDC) to assist with system development, documentation, and company registration. 'We developed the entire system ourselves, from the mobile app and integration platform to printer configuration and payment management. It took us around six months for the research and development and another month or two to build the first unit,' he said. Currently, two PrintTEX kiosks are available at the UTM Skudai campus – one in the 24-hour Study Room at the Sultanah Zanariah Library and another at Arked Lestari – while a third unit is operating outside Johor at UNISEL Bestari Jaya in Selangor. The company has also been approached by two higher education institutions under MARA that have expressed interest in allocating space for the installation of the Internet of Things (IoT)-based kiosk at their campuses.

Miri to host Sarawak Day 2025 celebration from July 20-22

MIRI (June 20): The Sarawak Day 2025 celebration will take place here from July 20 to 22, bringing together a series of events to commemorate the state's history, culture and achievements. Minister of Transport Sarawak Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin officially announced the schedule and key highlights at a press conference today, where he emphasised the strong commitment of the organising team and expressed confidence in the smooth execution of the event. He disclosed that the Sarawak Protocol, Ceremony and Event Management Unit (UPPANS), under the Premier's Department, has been entrusted with coordinating the celebration in collaboration with various state departments and agencies. 'This year's celebration aims to instil love for our state, honour Sarawak's rich history and the struggle for independence, and celebrate the progress and achievements we have made together,' he said. Lee added that the three-day celebration will feature a wide range of activities that reflect the unity, diversity, and pride of Sarawakians. Among the key programmes are the Sales Carnival and Sarawak Talent Showcase, which will run throughout the celebration period at Miri City Stadium. Spearheaded by the Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment Sarawak (Mintred), the event aims to highlight local talents and promote entrepreneurship. On the morning of July 20, a Zumba session will be held at Miri City Stadium from 7.15 am to 10.30 am, organised by the Miri District Office. That same evening, a Multi-Faith Thanksgiving Ceremony will take place at 8pm at the Meritz Hotel, led by the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor), in celebration of Sarawak's hallmark of religious harmony. On July 21, a thanksgiving ceremony will be held at 6pm at the At-Taqwa Mosque here, organised by the Sarawak Islamic Religious Department (Jais). The final day of the celebration will begin with a Unity Walk at 7am, starting from Miri City Stadium. Organised by the Miri Resident's Office, the walk is intended to symbolise solidarity among Sarawakians of all backgrounds. Later that afternoon, a townhall session will take place at 2pm at the Imperial Hotel here, jointly organised by the Miri Resident's Office and Miri City Council, serving as a platform for public engagement with government leaders. The highlight will be the Sarawak Day Assembly, scheduled for 8pm at Miri City Stadium. Spearheaded by UPPANS and the Miri Resident's Office, the grand finale is expected to draw large crowds in a show of unity, pride, and patriotism.
