Axiom-4 launch not expected before June 22 due to safety concerns: Union Minister Jitendra Singh

New Delhi [India], June 18 (ANI): Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Wednesday said that the much-anticipated Axiom-4 space mission, which includes participation by Indian astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, is not expected to launch before June 22, citing safety as a key factor in finalising the launch date.
On the Axiom 4 mission, Singh told reporters, 'We have been told that it won't be before 22nd June. There is a safety angle also involved here.'
Following the rescheduling of the launch, Axiom Space said in an official statement that NASA, Axiom Space, and SpaceX are now targeting no earlier than Sunday, June 22, for the launch of the fourth private astronaut mission to the International Space Station, Axiom Mission 4.
The change in the targeted launch date allows NASA time to continue evaluating space station operations after recent repair work in the aft (rear) segment of the International Space Station's Zvezda service module, the statement added.
Peggy Whitson, former NASA astronaut and now Director of Human Spaceflight at Axiom Space, will command the mission, while ISRO astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla will serve as the pilot. The two mission specialists will be ESA project astronaut Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski of Poland and Tibor Kapu of Hungary.
The crew will launch aboard the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft on a Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.'
In a post on X, Dr Jitendra Singh confirmed the updated launch timeline, writing:
'Axiom Mission 04 to the International Space Station (ISS)... After assessing key parameters, including module fitness, crew health, and weather, @Axiom_Space has indicated that June 22, 2025, may be the next likely launch date of Axiom-04 Mission carrying, among others, the Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla, to the ISS.'
He added, 'Further updates, if any, shall be shared accordingly.'
During a press conference, Singh also reflected on broader administrative reforms introduced under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.
'You have to prove that you know the skills for which you are applying for the job. That provides the pivotal field, and I'm glad and proud that the Prime Minister announced this from the ramparts of the Red Fort during his Independence Day speech,' he said.
He recalled that within three months of the PM's announcement, all necessary administrative exercises were completed, and from January 1, 2016, new recruitment rules were implemented across India -- except in Jammu and Kashmir, where they were enforced after the abrogation of Article 370.
Singh also spoke about the need to end outdated bureaucratic practices and hierarchies. 'There was a practice that Srinivasan ji was referring to -- the personal management of officers. We managed to break the hierarchy. I started calling all officers directly and saved their mobile numbers. There used to be confusion over who should come in line first. I also refrained from using the phone after 10 PM,' he said.
He noted that such changes created an environment that functioned like an automated system, helping the government achieve key administrative milestones.
Singh added that since taking office, PM Modi's primary focus has remained on the welfare of the poor. 'In his very first speech, the Prime Minister said that his government is dedicated to the poor, the deprived, and those who never got their due. We too have tried to follow that basic mantra in governance,' he said.
He also mentioned reforms aimed at transparency and integrity. 'One of them was about removing attachments and sending a message to the common man. The second was related to the interview process. The third was the prevention of corruption, which was a common complaint against officers in the discharge of their duties,' Singh said.
The Union Minister concluded that these steps laid the foundation for a new governance model that prioritises transparency, efficiency, and inclusion. (ANI)

The landmark Structural Heart Innovation event, held at Meril Academy, Vapi (Gujarat) from June 13–15, brought together over 150 Indian interventional cardiologists along with cardiac imaging expert and international stalwarts, including Prof. Ottavio Alfieri ('Father of mitral valve repair'), Prof. Francesco Maisano, and Prof. Agricola, joining global pioneers in edge-to-edge mitral valve repair. Meril is currently the world's leading TAVI group following the success of Myval THV and first Indian company to introduce a TEER system, placing the country firmly on the map as an innovator in transcatheter heart valve therapies (with both replacement and repair technology platforms). MyClip introduction demonstrates India's growing capabilities in structural heart solutions and reflects Meril's commitment to accessible cutting-edge cardiac care. MyClip TEER System is designed for patients suffering from severe Mitral Regurgitation (MR) who are at high surgical risk due to pre-existing issues like hypertension, diabetes, obesity, advanced age, physical frailty, enlarged or weak heart, and patients with kidney, lung and liver problems. MR, particularly if untreated, has a devastating mortality rate—over 50% of patients may not survive without timely intervention, and 1-year mortality can be as high as 57%. The MyClip TEER System enables precise closure of the mitral valve flaps, effectively preventing the backward flow of purified blood into the lungs. The procedure is minimally invasive, & takes approximately one hour, and allows patients to return home within 3–5 days. After discharge, patients can resume daily activities like walking and non-strenuous work within a short period post the procedure. According to the landmark COAPT Study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), patients receiving device-based therapy for mitral regurgitation experienced significantly better outcomes compared to those receiving standard medical treatment. Within 24 months, the hospitalization rate for heart failure was reduced to 35.8% per patient-year in the device group, compared to 67.9% in the control group. Additionally, mortality within the same period was notably lower in the device group, at 29.1%, compared to 46.1% in the control group. Currently, approximately 150 TEER (Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair) procedures are performed annually in India, with the majority of patients falling in the younger age group (30 – 60). These statistics bring to light a pressing need for early and effective intervention in younger demographics. The launch of MyClip TEER System marks a transformative moment for structural heart therapy in India. Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (TEER) therapy has shown significant success over traditional Guideline Directed Medical Therapy (GDMT). MyClip represents a major step forward in India's cardiovascular treatment landscape. In his inaugural speech, Sanjeev Bhatt, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy at Meril Life Sciences, said, 'In India, around 1.5 million people are known to have severe mitral regurgitation. Of these at least 1.2 million are post myocardial infarction (MI or a heart attack) or due to heart failure. The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (Yeida) on Friday said it has issued a letter of intent (LoI) to Dixon Technologies to set up a manufacturing unit on 22.54 acres of land in the proposed Electronics Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) in Sector 10 near the Noida International Airport. (REUTERS) 'Dixon will use the site to manufacture mobile phones, consumer electronics, telecom equipment, lighting products, and white goods. The company is the fourth major player to receive an LoI in this EMC, which is part of the central government's EMC 2.0 scheme. Before Dixon, two other companies have recently received LOIs to set up units in the cluster. Ascent-K Circuit, a subsidiary of Amber Enterprises India Ltd, will set up a facility on 16 acres to make high-end printed circuit boards (PCBs). Aurionpro ToshiAutomatic Systems has been given five acres for making smart transit systems and industrial automation products,' said Arun Vir Singh, chief executive officer of Yeida. Yeida said that the Sector 10 EMC already got in-principle approval from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in April 2025 during its seventh project review committee meeting, with Havells India Ltd as the anchor unit across 50 acres. According to the LoI issued on June 20, Singh told Dixon that their proposal has been approved with the rider that the final allotment will depend on clearance from the Invest UP Empowered Committee and compliance with state policies and rules. 'Land acquisition is underway and more provisional LoIs are being issued. With Dixon's entry, we hope the Sector 10 EMC will become a major electronics manufacturing hub in north India, creating many job opportunities and attracting more investment,' said Singh. The Uttar Pradesh government and Yeida are also pushing forward with other major industrial developments in sectors near the airport. 'Amber Enterprises is set to receive 100 acres in Sector 8 for a separate electronics and home appliances unit. Together, Amber and Ascent-K Circuit are expected to invest about ₹ 4,000 crore in the region. These projects will fuel growth in this region, and create huge business opportunities,' said Singh.
