China's JD.com enters stablecoin race as US passes GENIUS Act

Crypto Insight2 days ago

Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com is stepping into the stablecoin arena, with founder Liu Qiangdong revealing plans for a global licensing push aimed at cross-border payments.
The announcement, made during a media briefing in Beijing on Tuesday, came as the US Senate passed the Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for US Stablecoins, or GENIUS Act, a landmark bill establishing federal guardrails for stablecoins.
'We hope to apply for our stablecoin license in all major sovereign currency countries in the world,' Liu said. He outlined that the stablecoin would be used to enable faster, cheaper global transactions.
'We can reduce payment costs by 90% and deliver within 10 seconds,' he claimed, contrasting this with the traditional SWIFT system's two-to-four-day settlement window.
JD.com stablecoin plans to expand to retail
Initially targeting business-to-business (B2B) transactions, JD's stablecoin plans could eventually extend to consumer payments. 'After B-side payment is completed, we can move toward C-side payment,' Liu noted, hinting at broader retail ambitions.
Liu mentioned that their ambitious project may face challenges and even fail, but said that is 'how business works.'
JD.com is pushing to go global while sticking to its supply chain-focused business model. 'We are not going to do new models anymore,' Liu said. 'But we will deepen and strengthen the existing seven or eight business models […] and make them international businesses.'
On Wednesday, People's Bank of China Governor Pan Gongsheng announced plans to establish an international digital yuan operations center in Shanghai as the country accelerates efforts to internationalize the digital yuan and reduce global reliance on the US dollar.
In 2021, JD.com started using China's Digital Currency Electronic Payment (DCEP) system to pay employee salaries, B2B payments and cross-bank settlements. Interest in stablecoins rises with new regulations
JD.com's push into the stablecoin sector comes amid rising interest in stablecoin infrastructure globally, with new regulatory reforms.
On Tuesday, the Senate passed the GENIUS Act. The bill initially failed a cloture vote in the Senate in May in response to Democratic opposition to US President Donald Trump's connections to the cryptocurrency industry.
However, last week, in a 68–30 vote, the Senate voted to invoke cloture for the bill, setting it up for debate and a full floor vote.
The bill may still face hurdles in the Republican-held House.
Last week, stablecoin issuer Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire suggested that the stablecoin breakthrough moment isn't far off. 'We are not quite yet at the iPhone moment when developers everywhere realize the power and opportunity of programmable digital dollars on the internet in the same way they saw the unlock of programmable mobile devices,' Allaire said.

Octa's oil outlook: Middle East tensions threaten global supply

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - Media OutReach Newswire - 21 June 2025 - Crude oil, which is arguably the world's most important commodity, is on everybody's mind right now. The flared up conflict in the Middle East is increasing risks of a major oil supply shock, potentially pushing the price of 'black gold' into the stratosphere and completely derailing the global economy. In this article, Octa, a global retail broker, shares its expert opinion on the unfolding situation and outlines possible scenarios for the global oil market. As it often happens, the market started to price in the possibility of a new conflict in the Middle East well in advance. On 11 June, oil prices rose more than 4% after reports surfaced that the U.S. was preparing to evacuate its Iraqi embassy due to heightened security concerns in the region. Two days later, Israel and Iran exchanged airstrikes, pushing both Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI), the world's two major oil benchmarks, to five-month highs as investors anticipated potential supply disruptions from an open conflict. To this day, the conflict continues without resolution and oil prices remain elevated even as there are some telltale signs that the parties may be willing to negotiate. 'This burgeoning unrest introduces an unprecedented degree of volatility, significantly amplifying the specter of a catastrophic oil supply shock', argues Kar Yong Ang, a financial market analyst at Octa broker, adding that the conflict between Israel and Iran 'carries ominous potential to propel crude prices to unprecedented levels, thereby unleashing a cascade of detrimental effects that could, in the most dire of scenarios, cause a major global economic crisis'. Indeed, the Middle East in general and Iran in particular play a pivotal role in global energy markets. A substantial portion of the world's crude oil and liquified natural gas (LNG) is produced and exported in this region. Iran itself, despite the existing sanctions on exports, remains an important supplier of oil—notably, for China. Furthermore, a vast number of ships carrying crude oil and LNG transit through the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow yet vital chokepoint that Iran has repeatedly threatened to close. Should Iran act on this threat and block the strait, the repercussions would be quite severe, likely pushing global crude oil prices well above $100 per barrel, or even higher, due to the significant disruption of supply. Technically, if we look at a broader, long-term picture, WTI crude oil seems to be moving sideways with a minor bearish tilt. On a daily chart (see below), the price still has not escaped from the bearish parallel channel. However, due to the latest geopolitical news, the price has managed to rise above the 200-day moving average (MA) and seems poised to break above the critically important 77.60-78.00 area. 'Breaching the $80 handle should not be difficult if the current situation deteriorates sharply', says Kar Yong Ang. 'Continuing destruction of oil infrastructure in Iran, potential U.S. involvement in the war, countries' unwillingness to negotiate and, above all else, Iran's attempts to block the Strait of Hormuz, all of this will have a bullish impact on prices'. Indeed, a break above 80 level, would open the way towards 83.40, 85.20, 87.30, and 90.00 area. Alternatively, in case the hostilities moderate somewhat, other countries—particularly the U.S.—refrain from directly participating in the conflict, and both Israel and Iran express willingness to negotiate, bearish sentiment will immediately kick in. 'I think WTI oil may lose as much as 5 dollars per barrel in the blink of an eye should we see some progress in nuclear negotiations between Europeans and Iranians, which are due to commence in Geneva this Friday', concludes Kar Yong Ang. In this scenario, a break below 71.50 level would allow bears to target 67.80, 64.80 and 61.70. Overall, WTI crude price is now stuck in a broad range between $70 and $80. The move above and below these two levels will essentially indicate if the situation in the region is getting worse or is getting better. The chart below shows potential bullish and bearish targets, marked in green and red, respectively. A Smarter Way to Clean: Meet the CordZero™ A9T-LITE

If you've ever dreaded vacuuming because of the noise, the heavy lifting, or the mess that comes with emptying the dust bin, LG's CordZero™ A9T-LITE is the game-changer you didn't know you needed. It's not just another stick vacuum—it's a sleek, modern cleaning companion that thinks ahead, cleans smarter, and keeps your hands dust-free. At first glance, it looks like your average cordless vacuum. But once it docks itself into the All-in-One Tower™, things get interesting. With a simple click, the vacuum empties itself. No flying dust, no bin shake-outs over the trash. It's a small moment of peace in your day, and it makes all the difference. But the CordZero™ A9T-LITE doesn't stop at convenience. It packs powerful suction thanks to its Smart Inverter Motor™, offering three cleaning modes—Standard, Power, and Turbo. Whether it's crumbs in the kitchen or pet hair buried deep in the carpet, this vacuum tackles it all. And if you're the type who forgets when to clean filters, the LCD display and LG ThinQ™ app have your back—reminding you, tracking your vacuum's performance, and even helping with diagnostics. One of the most underrated features? The Kompressor™ technology. With the press of a lever, it compresses collected dust and hair in the bin, giving you more room to keep cleaning without having to pause and empty. Paired with a disposable dust bag system in the docking station, it keeps dirt neatly contained until you're ready to toss it—no clouds of debris, no mess. With tools smartly stored in the tower, you'll never go hunting for that crevice attachment again. And for anyone with allergies or a pet-heavy household, the 5-step filtration system that traps 99.99% of dust offers much-needed peace of mind. At 2.9 kg, it's lightweight enough to lift and even clean the ceiling—yes, really. And while a vacuum may not be the most glamorous home gadget, the CordZero™ A9T-LITE makes a convincing case for itself. It's clean, clever, and one less chore on your list. If vacuuming is a task you avoid, this may just be the upgrade that changes your mind. With LG's CordZero™, it's not just about cleaning—it's about cleaning without the chaos.

Money & Me: ‘Raising Dh2 million in funding for my start-up is a milestone'

For Jennifer Cohan Solal, buying a home in Dubai and raising funds for her UAE-based retail start-up are major financial milestones. The French citizen, 37, who lives on Dubai's Palm Jumeirah with her husband and two children, is chief executive and co-founder of Hushday, a premium flash sales platform. The company offers limited-time flash sales from luxury and premium brands in a members-only space for the digital-first generation. In April, it raised more than Dh2 million ($550,000) in pre-seed funding. Launched just this year, Hushday offers members access to sales across fashion, beauty, accessories, electronics, home and leisure products. The company is already considering plans to grow beyond the UAE and expand operations into Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait. 'We're not here to patch a post-Covid inventory issue. We're here to open a new, scalable path for growth for brands who want to reach a younger, price-sensitive, digital audience,' says Ms Solal, who has lived in Dubai for more than two years. 'We found our paradise here as entrepreneurs. There's something very inspiring about the UAE's pace, vision and ambition. It's the best choice we've ever made.' Before moving to the Emirates, Ms Solal worked in fashion and e-commerce sectors for more than 12 years and studied marketing at a French business school. Did wealth feature in your childhood? What did you learn from it? I grew up in a fairly privileged environment. Both my parents were doctors, but nothing was handed to them. They arrived in France from Algeria with nothing, and built their lives through hard work and education. That influenced me the most, seeing first-hand how much it takes to succeed and how deeply independence and resilience are rooted in our family culture. So even though we never lacked anything, my parents always told me to be careful and thoughtful about money, and above all, to rely on myself. That mix of stability and drive has shaped every decision I've made. How did you first earn? My first job was with a start-up when I was 18. I launched a luxury concierge service company in Paris by procuration for a woman who had an amazing idea, but no time to execute it. So, I did everything from A to Z for her and gained more recognition and experience than money. I enjoyed the feeling of autonomy, the sense that if I wanted something, I had the power to go out and make it happen. My first real job was with The Other Store, and my job was to create and manage e-commerce websites for brands. I was 20 years old and got paid €1,000 ($1,154) a month. Any early financial jolts? The biggest financial setback was when I left the corporate world to launch my first start-up, L'Ultime, in Paris. I call it the first digital native vertical brand in pastry. Although the brand gained strong visibility in France, the media attention was incredible and the revenue looked exciting, I quickly learnt the difference between revenue and profit and between brand hype and sustainable growth. So, it was humbling, but also an incredible experience. I met a lot of inspiring people and understood the deeper mechanics of running a business. It made me a stronger and responsible entrepreneur. How do you grow your wealth? I'm in reinvestment mode, so I pour most of my capital into building a long-term vision for Hushday. I have also invested in Dubai real estate. My husband and I purchased a villa on Palm Jumeirah two years ago. We also have property investments in France. Are you a spender or a saver? I'm more of a spender now, but spend consciously. I invest in my business, in quality experiences with my family and in our lifestyle. But I aspire to become more of a saver in the years to come because I want to build a legacy and create a financial foundation that brings freedom, not stress. Have you been wise with money? Yes, I've always been careful with money. I don't take reckless risks such as big spending sprees or flashy purchases, apart from the occasional luxuries I need during sales or beautiful family trips. I've never lived beyond my means. I was raised to be intentional with money and that has stayed with me. Even now as I build my company, I make sure that every dirham I spend serves a purpose and receives a return on investment. What has been your best investment? My best investment was on my own education and self-development, in my children's education and in Dubai. We love this city and feel aligned with its energy and ambition. We are committed to creating something meaningful here for our family and the ecosystem. Any cherished purchases? Yes, everything in our home is a cherished purchase. All items, from the furniture to the decorations, have been chosen with intention. I spent a lot of time and energy to build our home. I love the feeling when people walk in and say it doesn't feel like a house, but a home. Every morning, my husband and I almost cry when we wake up and see the sun and sea in front of us. How do you feel about money? Money is just a consequence, it's not a goal. It gives you freedom, but it doesn't define success. For me, what matters most is creating an impact, leaving a mark and building something lasting. Being the richest person in the cemetery never interested me. I want to do something that lives beyond me and make my children and family proud. Any financial advice for your younger self? Start saving earlier, not out of fear, but to gain freedom. Understand that money buys you time, leverage and peace of mind. Use it to invest in skills, ideas and people who elevate you. Never confuse visibility with value. Also understand that growth is quiet, but compounding is magic. Any key financial milestones? Raising our first round of funding for Hushday was huge, not just because of the capital but the confidence it signalled from people who believe in our vision. Another milestone was buying our home in Dubai before we moved here from Paris. It was a statement of trust in ourselves, in our family and in the life we're choosing to build here. What luxuries are important to you? Spending quality time with family and friends, discovering new places and getting lost in different cultures. When we will eventually be free from work, my husband and I plan to do a world tour. So, it's not always about price, but about the richness of experience and emotions. What are your financial goals? Financial independence is non-negotiable. But right now, my main focus is on creating value and building Hushday into the future leader of premium private sales in the Gulf region. I want to create strong returns for investors and build a brand that resonates across borders.
