Reitan wins Soudal playoff for first European title

The Advertiser25-05-2025

Norway's Kristoffer Reitan has captured his first European tour title after making a birdie at the second playoff hole to win the Soudal Open at the expense of Ewen Ferguson and Darius van Driel.
Going out early in Sunday's final round at the Rinkven International course in Antwerp, the No. 278-ranked Reitan shot a nine-under 62 to post the clubhouse target at 13 under.
Van Driel, ranked No.331, shot 67 to join Reitan in the lead but the No.186-ranked Ferguson looked like taking his fourth European tour title as he went down the last with a one-stroke lead.
However, his par putt lipped out to push him into a three-way playoff, which took place on the 18th.
The trio all made par the first time but Reitan rolled in a birdie putt from 15 feet for the win after Ferguson and Van Driel had again made par.
Australia's Jason Scrivener signed off with a 71 to finish three under, 10 shots adrift of the leaders.

EPL Forest head coach Nuno pens new three-year deal

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo has signed a new three-year contract to remain at the City Ground until at least 2028. The 51-year-old guided Forest to a seventh-place finish in the English Premier League last season, securing European qualification for the first time since the 1995-96 season. For much of the campaign, it looked as though Forest were going to qualify for the Champions League, but they lost five of their last eight games. However, that has not prevented owner Evangelos Marinakis from rewarding Nuno following the club's highest league finish for 30 years, while they also reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup before losing to Manchester City. "Since we arrived at Forest, we have worked extremely hard to create a special bond between the players, the fans and everyone at the Club, which helped us achieve great things last season. "I would like to thank our owner, Mr Marinakis, for his constant support and backing. It is important to me to share a strong relationship with our ownership and we have thoroughly enjoyed working together ever since I arrived at Forest. "Now is the time to work harder than ever as we strive for more special memories together." The former Wolves and Tottenham boss arrived at the City Ground in December 2023 following the sacking of Steve Cooper, and helped the club avoid relegation on the final day of the season. Flamengo give Chelsea the Blues, Bayern win again

Flamengo have overturned a first-half deficit to defeat Chelsea 3-1 in their Club World Cup clash, a result that gives the Brazilians pole position in Group D. Second-half goals from Bruno Henrique, Danilo and Wallace Yan secured the South American side their second consecutive win in the tournament. Pedro Neto's early strike had put Chelsea ahead but the Premier League side squandered several opportunities to extend their lead, allowing Flamengo to stage a stirring comeback. The Brazilians scored two goals in quick succession through Henrique and Danilo, in the 62nd and 65th minutes, which was followed by Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson being shown a straight red for a nasty studs-up challenge three minutes later. Flamengo wrapped up the victory with Yan's strike in the 83rd minute. The result leaves Chelsea second with three points while Esperance de Tunis and Los Angeles FC have yet to register a point, both sides having a game in hand. At the Hard Rock Stadium, Bayern Munich beat Boca Juniors 2-1, thanks to goals from Harry Kane and Michael Olisi to move to the top of Group C. Bayern reignited the flickering flame of European honours after battling through a tense, fiery showdown to storm into the last 16. Backed by a roaring sea of blue-and-yellow clad fans who turned the Hard Rock Stadium into a noisy outpost of their "Bombonera", Boca Juniors fought fiercely, but Bayern's resilience shone through in the closing stages. After Kane gave the German champions an early lead, Boca equalised through Miguel Merentiel, only for Olise to score a late winner. Boca, on one point, remain in contention as they face amateurs Auckland City in the last round of matches while Bayern take on Benfica, who are second after their 6-0 drubbing of Auckland City in Orlando. Ángel Di María and Leandro Barreiro each scored two goals to help Benfica in a game that was delayed at half-time because of thunder and lightning. Di María, who teamed with Lionel Messi to win the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, netted his first goal from the penalty spot deep into added at the end of the first half. His second, and the team's sixth, was again from the penalty spot and deep in added time at the end of the match. Auckland City exchanged counterattacks with the Portuguese powerhouse in the first half of the Group C match, but were still outshot 18-1. Vangelis Pavlidis made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute, Renato Sanches added a third a short time later and Barreiro then scored a pair of goals to increase the lead to 5-0. In Nashville, Youcef Belaïli scored in the 70th minute and goalkeeper Ben Said saved a penalty deep in second-half stoppage time as Esperance Tunis defeated Los Angeles FC 1-0. Referee Espen Eskas awarded a very late spot kick following a video review, ruling Khalil Guenichi had felled Marlon in the area. But Denis Bouanga drove his ensuing penalty kick into the dive of Said, the final salvo in a result that eliminated LAFC (0-2-0, 0 points) from tournament contention.
