Japanese Education Minister visits Egypt to strengthen ties with Africa ahead of TICAD9
Toshiko Abe, Japan's Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, visited Egypt from May 4 to 5 as part of efforts to deepen educational and scientific collaboration with African countries in the lead-up to the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9).
Recognizing Egypt's leadership in Africa and its proactive adoption of Japanese educational practices—most notably the 'tokkatsu' (special activities) model—Minister Abe held a series of high-level meetings and site visits aimed at reinforcing bilateral cooperation.
During her visit, Minister Abe met with Egypt's Minister of Education and Technical Education, Mohamed Abdel Latif, and Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Ayman Ashour. Discussions focused on the expansion of key collaborative projects such as the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST) and the Egyptian-Japanese Schools (EJS), which currently total 55 nationwide, with 15 more scheduled to open this fall.
The officials also reviewed progress on the upcoming EJ-KOSEN project, a technical education initiative slated to launch in September, designed to cultivate highly skilled engineers and specialists. The two sides expressed mutual interest in expanding future cooperation in industrial human resource development and inclusive education for individuals with special needs.
Minister Abe also met with Amr Adly, President of E-JUST, to explore ways to further strengthen institutional collaboration. In addition, she toured an applied technology school that trains technicians at the secondary level, the Japanese School in Cairo, and the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM).
Her visit also included consultations with the World Bank's Country Director in Egypt and the President of Cairo University, underscoring a shared commitment to educational innovation and international partnership.

Welcoming the rising volume of Turkish investments in Egypt, Abdelatty expressed Egypt's commitment to attracting more Turkish capital by leveraging its extensive network of trade agreements and the investor-friendly environment of the Suez Canal Economic Zone. He also pointed to the incentives and facilities available to foreign investors, affirming the government's resolve to address any challenges facing Turkish businesses. In this context, he cited the recent decision by the Egyptian Prime Minister to establish a dedicated unit to support Turkish investments and ensure smooth business operations in the country.

Egypt, Italy mull ways to boost AI cooperation
Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Amr Talaat discussed with Italy's Minister of Enterprises, Adolfo Urso, ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). They held a meeting in the Italian capital, Rome, in the presence of Bassam Rady, Egypt's Ambassador to Italy, to review key developments in AI applications in both Egypt and Italy. They also followed up on discussions initiated during Urso's visit to Egypt in April 2024, which aimed to lay the foundations for constructive collaboration between the two countries in various aspects of AI and its infrastructure. During the meeting, Talaat explained the main aspects and objectives of the second edition of Egypt's national AI strategy, noting that it focuses on building digital capacities, AI governance, fostering innovation, research and development, and enhancing international cooperation in this field. For his part, Urso highlighted Italy's efforts to support startups working in the AI sector. He also outlined the features of an initiative launched by Italy during its 2024 presidency of the G7, which involves the establishment of an 'AI center for Sustainable Development'. This initiative aims to support the use of AI in advancing development efforts across the African continent. Urso expressed keenness to strengthen bilateral cooperation in AI, as well as to collaborate on a regional level to implement and achieve the goals of this initiative. He also thanked the Egyptian Ministry of Communications for nominating a representative to serve on the center's executive committee. This meeting is part of Talaat's visit to Italy, in response to an invitation from Urso. During the visit, several meetings were held with officials from Italian companies and institutions to boost cooperation and attract more investment into Egypt's communications and IT sector.
