Tamworth preview: Green Shadows is chasing gold in Tamworth Cup

The Big Dance last November was an afterthought for Green Shadows according to co-trainer Gerald Ryan but it's at the forefront of his mind this year.
Ryan and co-trainer Sterling Alexiou have targeted the Tamworth Cup (1400m), which carries Big Dance eligibility, as an ideal starting point for Green Shadows who races extremely well first-up.
'The Big Dance will be the plan for him this year. He has to get through this race first and we will see how he goes,' said Ryan.
'About six weeks ago we decided to target the Tamworth Cup first-up with him.
'It would be nice if he could book his place in the Big Dance now and we can make a plan to have him spot on in November.'

Green Shadows scored a first-up win in a Benchmark 78 at Warwick Farm on April 1 last year and progressed to winning a Midway at Randwick before capturing the Goulburn Cup at his eighth start for the preparation on August 25.
He then had to stay up until November 5 for the $3 million feature.
'The Big Dance was an afterthought with him last campaign. He won the Goulburn Cup at his eighth start and was over the top by the time he got to Randwick three runs later,' he said.
'He still ran an honest race. He drew bad and was out wide all-the-way.
'He spelled well and I reckon he grew which is strange at his age.
'He has comeback well, his work has been good and his trials have been solid without his blinkers on.'
He will try and replicate the success of Big Dance winner Gringotts who qualified for the race by winning the Tamworth Cup.
Inverell trainer Todd Payne has his stable star and Country Championship Final runner-up Lisztomania in the Cup as well as the Benchmark 78 Handicap (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday.
'Tamworth looks more tempting as the rail is out nine metres at Randwick which doesn't help but he does race so well there,' Payne said.
'He hasn't missed a place in six starts there and that's what makes it hard not to look at that race.'
Lisztomania has drawn wide in gate 14 in the Tamworth Cup, the same barrier he had when a close second in the Country Championship Qualifier.
'It doesn't really matter too much with him because he will be coming down the middle of the track anyway,' he said.
'He will go for a spell after this and our next mission is The Kosciuszko and we will go into that fresh.'
Payne also has three other runners for the day including Desert Cougar, who is a half-sister to Lisztomania, in the Maiden Plate (1000m).
The daughter of Capitalist only had one run for Payne at the end of last campaign when fifth to Sharpen The Knives at Armidale on December 8.
'She ran a handy race and we put her away,' he said.
'She trialled well the other day and I'm very happy with her going into this race. I think she is a chance.'
Payne also saddles up Celestialconqueror in the Super Maiden (1400m).
'He's a nice horse but will want further as he gets into his preparation,' Payne said.
'The 1400m first-up is a good starting point for him and the blinkers go on. He's worked in them and is a lot more focused.'
Takemine will back up in the Benchmark 58 Handicap (1000m) following strong closing second over 1100m at Armidale last week.
'She is dropping back to 1000m and will get back but the last time she raced at the track and distance, she rattled home to be beaten a nostril,' he said.

It's been a long and frustrating preparation with Duped By Spin but trainer Craig Widdison is hoping she can pick up a well-earned win when she crosses the border.
Duped By Spin started her campaign at Wagga on November 1 and had a couple of hiccups along the way but found some consistency in the past two months with consecutive placings before contesting last week's Albury Cup.
'She's had a fairly long preparation but nothing has gone right for her,' said Widdison.
'Every time we thought we had he ready, something went wrong then her last few runs had been good up until the Cup last week.
'We were hoping to get to the fence and have a cheap run but that didn't eventuate.'
The five-year-old finished second last behind Matusalem in the Listed event but will appreciate a drop back in grade when she backs-up in the Benchmark 82 Handicap (2000m).
Prior to that, she was second in the Tom Patton Cup at Wagga, second in the Albury Mile behind County Kilkenny and a close fourth to Star Buyer in the Gundagai Cup.
'Her run in the Albury Cup was good on a heavy track behind County Kilkenny who grows a leg on the wet,' he said
'In the Gundagai Cup, she was left in front and fair way out and just got swamped late. She is a better chaser.
'She has taken no harm out of the Albury Cup and this looks a nice race for her.
'Nick Souquet is back on as well. He knows her quite well and has had some luck on her.
'She deserves another win and hopefully she can get that here.'
Widdison's other runner is Sister Shay who is looking for a breakthrough win in the Maiden Handicap (1500m) after placings runner-up in her three runs for Widdison following a debut seventh at Kyneton for Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman.
'She has been great with three seconds in-a-row but it's also been a bit hard to take,' he said.
'I have thrown the blinkers on her this week in the hope they can help her find an extra length or so.
'We have also gone with a claim this week, not that Wardy (Brendan Ward) has done anything wrong.
'We just wanted to try something different and that two kilos might just make the difference.'

'It was a tough win and that's never easy to do in a high pressure race with plenty of opposition. 'But he's a quality horse and he has come through the grades really well.'' Headley Grange, confidently baked into $2.45 favouritism, gave Jason Collett the third leg of a winning treble when he comfortably held off Welwal ($26) to win by a half length with Astero ($51) three-quarters of a length away third. The Bjorn Baker-trained Raikkonen ($5) settled outside Headley Grange early but then lost his position when stablemate Iknowastar came across in front of him. Raikkonen then ended up on the rail behind Headley Grange but when the winner eased away from the inside to make his finishing run, Baker's sprinter stayed close to the inside and rallied late to finish an unlucky fourth. But Headley Grange was a deserving winner - and he's not finished yet. Pride revealed plans to set Headley Grange for the South Grafton Cup (1600m) on July 13. 'We will try and qualify him for one of the Dances.'' Headley Grange has now scored successive wins to start his winter campaign after a brilliant first-up effort over 1300m at Royal Randwick two weeks ago. 'I don't think he was quite as sharp today as he was off that hot tempo the other day,'' Pride said. 'Maybe just second up he was a little bit vulnerable today but I would say he will bounce out of this win. 'I don't know if his best trip is 1400m or a mile (1600) yet. We want it to be a mile as there are not as many races around for 1400m races.'' Collett, who completed his treble on Headley Grange after his earlier wins on Callistemon and Lulumon, wasn't legged into the saddle on the Pride sprinter until the Civic Stakes field came out onto the track. Pride, who trained a double in successive races when Accredited won the closer, had made application to Racing NSW stewards to have Headley Grange walked out riderless from the Theatre of the Horse to the course proper. 'At the end of last preparation and again last start, when the jockey mounted Headley Grange he started to suck back and play up a bit in the yard,'' Collett explained. • Brave One's wide run no obstacle in Randwick triumph 'Joe asked the stewards if he could have me legged on last and be last onto the track and that way he is always moving forward and not in that environment. It worked as he was able to stay relaxed.'' The Civic Stakes proved an easy watch for Headley Grange backers as Collett gave the ever-consistent sprinter the smoothest of rides. 'The tempo was solid through the middle section and I had a horse travelling 'lovely' when the opportunity arose pretty early in the straight to pop off,'' Collett said. 'I did although it was a long way from home, especially at that tempo, but he just found another gear. 'When they came to him at the 150 (metres) he went again so that's a really good sign.'' Collett agreed with Pride's assertion that although Headley Grange's win wasn't as dynamic as his first-up effort, the rising five-year-old gelding showed there are better wins in store after he improved his race record to eight wins from 18 starts and nearly $600,000 prizemoney. 'The tempo of that race was different to last start,'' Collett said. 'It was genuinely run but Headley Grange has quickened off it and then he's had to tough it out. 'Both starts he has done it either way. Last start, a turn of foot and today he has had to show he was tough under pressure. They're great attributes to have – he's a really nice horse.'' Wagga preview, tips: Cross and Chung's next big hope

Trainer Bruce Cross and owner/breeder Malcolm Chung are best known via the deeds of the sensational siblings, Epsom winner Final Fantasy and Canberra Cup winner Padfoot Charlie. Now, a quarter of a century on, the pair may have themselves another 'good horse' from the very same 'vines' that produced their former dynamic duo. Her name is Just Like Tilda. The daughter of Divine Prophet created a lasting impression when finishing over the top of her rivals to score an impressive, bookie-busting, debut win at Kembla earlier this month when crunched from an opening quote of $6.50 into $4.80. Cross could be forgiven for talking up Just Like Tilda on the score of her debut but is playing down any hype. 'At the moment, I am holding my powder dry,' Cross said. 'Her win at Kembla was a good win and I think she has improved a little bit, but I'm just not prepared to put my head on the block yet. 'Sometimes you can put the cart before the horse and you get too excited. 'That's why we are prepared to take a bit of time with her and give her all the chances she deserves.' Cross revealed that he had toyed with the idea of a metropolitan start for Just Like Tilda, instead opting for a trip away down to Wagga. 'I thought about it but I was a little bit too scared that she would just get up in the benchmark system too quick,' Cross explained. 'I'm interested to see what she can do on Sunday and looking forward to it to be honest. 'We are going there with our glass half-full. Whatever happens, the trip away, the floating, that all improves a horse and it sort of adds another string to their bow. 'She is a very sensible little filly, we are going there hoping, we just have to wait for the outcome.' Just Like Tilda will be ridden the Easdown's Accountants Class 1 Handicap (1300m) by Deanne Panya; gun jockey and twin sister of Beany, both of whom spend their mornings at Cross' home ground, Warwick Farm. 'Deanne knows Just Like Tilda pretty well. She's ridden her in a bit of a work and in the trial. 'And to be honest, Deanne might have very well been on her when she won at Kembla except she was suspended. 'Deanne rode a winner (on Thursday) at Gosford, she is very underrated.' Just Like Tilda is the third foal of her dam Matilda Jade whose foaling date (September 14 in 2011) was the exact same day as Winx. Matilda Jade was bred and raced by Chung and trained by Cross but sadly, the daughter of I Am Invincible only raced once, finishing runner-up at Gundagai. 'We took her there thinking she would win easily but she got galloped on and severed a tendon so that was the only start she ever had,' Cross said. He's also the damsire of Silent Witness. As for Badhatharry, he has had a textbook build-up to 1400m which he is crying out for. Michael Travers has three accepted here and all three could easily medal. MISS PEPEHA (10) is getting closer than ever to a win. His other one Stormy Malice wants 1400m. DESERT OPAL (5) has a win, four seconds and a third from his 11 starts, His personal best came last start on May 27 when he won a 1400m Maiden at home at Albury on a Heavy 8. Reliable type, well up to this. Only two are wins but looking back now, her losses, while costly at the time, were in races where the form has stood up since. Drawn one, should help. ELASTANE MISS (3) has done nothing wrong in her four starts; she won at Albury on a Heavy 10 and all the rest are seconds including one here at home. Third-up here; Blaike McDougall sticking for a third time too. He's got a good set of numbers across the board and as for each-way punters are concerned; he has won and placed at 34 of his 65 starts. Mister Bianco books Winx Guineas bid with winning hat-trick
Peter Tighe will now get a golden chance to win the Winx Guineas with a horse wearing the colours of his legendary champion. Winx's part-owner Tighe knows Mister Bianco is no Winx, but he was more than happy to win the $150,000 TL Cooney (1350m) at Ipswich as the three-year-old gelding made it a hat-trick of wins. Mister Bianco, which races in Tighe's Magic Bloodstock colours made famous by Winx, will now attack the Group 3 Winx Guineas over 1600m on the Sunshine Coast in a fortnight. 'The idea was if he keeps improving, we would give it a crack. 'But I won't be on the Sunshine Coast for the Guineas, I am just about to head to America for a month so I will have to keep an eye on it from afar.' Mister Bianco started the $3.40 equal favourite at Ipswich and he and fellow betting pick Stay Focused settled down to fight it out from a long way out with Mister Bianco being stronger on the line. READ: 'Didn't think she get to the races': $5500 filly delivers on debut Andrew Mallyon scored a late pick-up ride on Mister Bianco after Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michael Rodd fractured his hand at track work in Brisbane on Saturday morning. 'I feel for Michael Rodd who was meant to ride this horse,' Shailer said. 'He'll be out of play for a little bit but Andrew was a great replacement. He is familiar with the horse and has done a wonderful job. 'The penny is starting to drop with Mister Bianco and he is racing with confidence. 'Three months ago, he wouldn't have won that race. 'He would have found a way to get himself beaten so it is good that he's got that killer instinct about him and he was really good off what was a strong tempo today.' Meanwhile, Gold Coast trainer Adam Campton struck a blow at big odds when mare Zouperb ($17) won the BM80 Handicap (1100m). Campton had been considering aiming the five-year-old mare at the Gai Waterhouse Classic but instead opted for the easier assignment over the shorter trip. 'She was purchased online for $30,000 and she's now got a Saturday metro win next to her name,' Campton said. 'Around the turn I was quietly confident but I knew we had to chase down a couple of handy horses and I was seeing (runner-up) End Assembly coming late,' Campton said.
