Why Wolfspeed Plunged Today
Wolfspeed said it plans to file for bankruptcy today. The company offers a cautionary tale about investing lots of money in assets before revenues come in. However, it appears equity holders will not be totally wiped out. 10 stocks we like better than Wolfspeed › Shares of silicon carbide chip manufacturer Wolfspeed (NYSE: WOLF) sank on Monday, falling 34.4% as of 12:18 p.m. ET. Wolfspeed issued a press release today noting it plans to declare Chapter 11 bankruptcy in order to restructure its significant debt load. This move had been telegraphed earlier in May, as Wolfspeed ran into funding struggles earlier this year when the government didn't follow through on an expected CHIPS Act subsidy. But while many bankruptcies lead to a "zero," it appears equity holders will at least retain a shred of the company going forward. Under the terms of the announced restructuring plan, Wolfspeed will: Receive $275 million of new convertible notes, bought by some of its existing current note investors. That will pay off $250 million of senior secured notes at a 9.75% premium. Most consequentially, Wolfspeed will convert $5.2 billion in existing convertible notes and a $2 billion prepayment from Japanese chipmaker Renesas into just $500 million in new senior notes, 95% of new equity, and warrants. Existing equity holders will have their shares cancelled, but receive 3% to 5% of the new equity. With these transactions, Wolfspeed will reduce its debt load by about 70%, or $4.6 billion, and interest payments by 60%. Wolfspeed had invested heavily in building next-generation silicon carbide (SiC) chips, which is still supposed to be a high-growth market niche. That being said, the main use case for SiC chips in electric vehicles has slowed down markedly, which is likely the main reason Wolfspeed wasn't able to generate the expected amount of revenue and profit to cover its interest payments and pay down debt. However, investors may want to take a look at the restructured company once it emerges from bankruptcy, which is forecast by the end of the third quarter of 2025. SiC should continue to grow as more high-voltage applications emerge in EVs, electric infrastructure, and now artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. Going forward, Wolfspeed will have a lower debt burden, and may eventually see its next-generation SiC manufacturing capabilities find favor in the market. As of now, however, investors may want to see how the dust settles after all these transactions are said and done before diving in. Tesla shares pop 10% as Elon Musk touts ‘successful' Robotaxi test launch in Texas
Shares of Elon Musk's Tesla popped 10% on Monday following the debut of its self-driving 'Robotaxi' flee — the first major test of technology that the billionaire has promised will transform the company's business. Tesla shares were trading at about $354 per share as a handpicked group of influencers who participated in the trial run in Austin, Texas, on Sunday uploaded positive reviews on X and other social media platforms. Wedbush analyst Dan Ives, a Tesla bull, said he participated in a test drive that 'exceeded our expectations' for the fledging technology. Advertisement 4 About 10 Robotaxis were included in the initial rides. REUTERS Ives maintained his 'outperform' rating for Tesla's stock and a $500 price target. 'Going into it, we expected to be impressed but walking away from it, all there is to say is that this is the future,' Ives said in a note to clients. Ives said he took two approximately 15-minute rides around Austin. Advertisement 'The ride itself was completely smooth, and it was indistinguishable that the car was driverless as there was never a moment in the vehicle where we felt as if it did something irrational,' Ives said. The Tesla safety monitors 'were not permitted to comment on anything nor did they influence the car in any way,' he added. The electric car maker began offering driverless rides by invitation only on Sunday, with riders charged a $4.20 flat fee — a cheeky not to marijuana use. About 10 driverless Tesla Model Y SUVs were reportedly on the road, with company 'safety monitors' on board in the front seat to oversee the trips. Advertisement 4 Elon Musk congratulated his team on a 'successful' debut. X/@philduan Bearded Tesla Guy, a social media influencer, compared the experience to 'basically Uber.' Farzad Mesbahi, a former Tesla employee-turned influencer, said his rides were 'very smooth and comfortable.' 'Now Tesla needs to scale this service safely,' Mesbahi said on X. 'As long as the system performance holds, they should be able to cover the US with Robotaxis virtually overnight.' Advertisement Robotaxi is set to directly compete with Google-owned Waymo and Amazon-backed Zoox in the autonomous vehicle market. 4 The Robotaxis had a company safety officer in the front seat. REUTERS Musk had earlier shared 'super congratulations to the @Tesla_AI software & chip design teams on a successful @Robotaxi launch!!' 'Culmination of a decade of hard work. Both the AI chip and software teams were built from scratch within Tesla,' Musk wrote on X. Invitations circulated by Tesla said the initial Robotaxi service would be available from 6:00 AM to 12:00 AM local time and limited to a geofenced area, meaning anything outside the pre-set boundaries would be off-limits. 4 Musk has touted the Robotaxi program as key to Tesla's long-term business. AP Tesla also said Robotaxi service would be limited or unavailable in the event of bad weather. Musk has long touted the potential of Tesla's 'Full Self Driving' technology, though federal regulators and other critics have repeatedly raised safety concerns. Advertisement He has suggested that autonomous driving technology can add $5 trillion to $10 trillion to Tesla's market capitalization by transforming its vehicles into an instant productive fleet. The billionaire had said the Robotaxi rollout was limited because Tesla was 'being super paranoid about safety.' The debut occurred at a critical time for Tesla, whose shares have been under pressure since Musk embarked on his controversial work with President Trump and the Department of Government Efficiency. Musk and Trump had a very public falling-out earlier this month, though the two have since appeared to mend fences.

Timelapse Shows Global Ship Traffic in Hormuz Strait Under Iran Threat
Global shipping companies and businesses are closely monitoring developments around the Strait of Hormuz, after Iranian threats to disrupt shipping following the U.S. strikes on its nuclear sites in its "Operation Midnight Hammer" The U.S. warned Iran that any move to shut the Strait would be "economic suicide" and trigger a severe response. The Strait of Hormuz matters enormously because it channels roughly one‑fifth to one‑quarter of the world's oil supply, serving as a critical artery for global energy markets-with international navigation already affected by Iran's proxy Houthi group disruptions in the Red Sea. Disruption of the strait would not only send global oil and gas prices surging but would also threaten economic stability in the U.S. and China, with global costly implications for commercial vessels too. Iran's threats to block it raises urgent alarms from governments and markets. On Monday, two Japanese shipping companies said they had directed their vessels to limit time spent in the Gulf while continuing transits through the Strait of Hormuz, according to Reuters. On Sunday, two supertankers-each carrying up to 2 million barrels-turned back in the Strait of Hormuz after U.S. airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites raised fears of commercial shipping being targeted, Bloomberg reported. Asian markets are likely to be the most affected by supply disruptions at Hormuz. The U.S. Energy Administration Information (EIA) estimates that China, India, Japan, and South Korea accounted for 69% of all Hormuz crude oil and condensate flows in 2024. As for the U.S., about 7% of its crude oil and condensate imports and 2% of its petroleum liquids consumption came through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran cannot completely "close" the Strait under international law on maritime passage but could impose restrictions on its northern shore and step up mine and missile threats to vessels. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun: "The Persian Gulf and its adjacent waters are important corridors for international trade in goods and energy, and it is in the common interest of the international community to maintain security and stability in the region. China calls on the international community to step up its efforts to promote de-escalation of the conflict and to prevent regional instability from having a greater impact on global economic development." Japan's Nippon Yusen shipping company spokesperson told Reuters: "We will make decisions on each vessel's passage through the Strait of Hormuz on a flexible basis." Sajith Marakar, Managing Director of Consolidated Bureau, an Abu Dhabi-based marine survey and inspection company told Gulf News: "If declared a war zone, cargo insurers and P&I (Protection & Indemnity) Clubs for shipping vessels may refuse to cover the risk, halting vessel operations." U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Fox Business Sunday Morning Futures: "Well, I would encourage the Chinese Government in Beijing to call them about that, because they heavily depend on the Straits of Hormuz for their oil. If they do that, it'll be another terrible mistake. It's economic suicide for them if they do it. And we retain options to deal with that." Iran may need to consider an approach that would not harm its allies while responding to U.S. and Israeli attacks.
