AMC Theatres Is Adding More Pre-Movie Ads; Is This a Nessassary Evil For Theaters To Survive? — GeekTyrant

Geek Tyrant05-06-2025

If you've ever checked your watch 15-20 minutes into what should've been the start of your movie, only to be greeted by yet another trailer or car commercial, well... buckle up. Starting July 1, AMC Theatres, the biggest movie chain in the world, is adding even more ads before the film actually begins.
AMC has inked a deal with National CineMedia Inc. to begin running what's called a 'platinum spot', which will feature an ad shown right before the movie starts, in that final stretch of trailers when the anticipation is peaking. It's an ad that audiences won't miss.
This is a move aimed squarely at generating what AMC calls 'vital revenue,' and here's what they had to say about it:
'While AMC was initially reluctant to bring this to our theaters, our competitors have fully participated for more than five years without any direct impact to their attendance.'
They're not wrong. Regal and Cinemark signed on to this model years ago. AMC was the last holdout. But, after the pandemic ravaged the exhibition industry and with 2024 delivering a mixed bag at the box office, the company is looking for every dollar it can find.
Still, it's hard not to feel a little defeated. As a movie fan, you want theaters to thrive. You want AMC to survive because the industry needs it to survive. But making the moviegoing experience worse, especially when it's already fighting the "I'll just wait to stream it" mindset, feels like a step in the wrong direction.
It's funny, because AMC's slogan is 'We Make Movies Better' but this will make the movie going experience at their theaters worse.
It's not like audiences don't notice. According to AMC's own website:
'The listed runtime is the duration of the feature film. The feature film does not start at the published showtime. There are approximately 20 minutes of preshow material, including trailers, between the published showtime and the start of the feature film.'
And now, that 'preshow' just got longer.
To be fair, AMC is trying some genuinely good stuff. Discount Wednesdays are coming back, which is a solid move to get casual audiences back in the habit. But commercials? That's just another reason for people to show up late, or skip the theater entirely.
This isn't about hating on ads. It's about the core experience. People go to the movies for escape, not to see ads for insurance rates or real estate agents. If the industry really wants to survive, maybe it should focus more on reminding us why we fell in love with movie theaters in the first place, not why we keep showing up 25 minutes late.

Bank of America Stock (BAC) Nears Record High as Pivotal Earnings Report Looms

Bank of America (BAC) is scheduled to report its Q2 2025 earnings on July 16, with analysts forecasting $0.90 per share, reflecting modest 8% year-over-year growth. I believe BAC is well-positioned to beat expectations, supported by conservative loan loss provisioning, ongoing share buybacks, strength in its Global Markets division, and higher net interest income amid slower-than-expected Federal Reserve rate cuts. Easily unpack a company's performance with TipRanks' new KPI Data for smart investment decisions Receive undervalued, market resilient stocks right to your inbox with TipRanks' Smart Value Newsletter BAC stock currently trades at $45, within striking distance of its all-time high of $47 per share. With resistance clearly set, BAC stock will need a strong catalyst to make further headway beyond $50 per share. Given the lack of clear catalysts, I remain Neutral on BAC stock. It currently trades at 1.66x tangible book value and 12.6x 2025 earnings—a valuation that's lower than peers like JPMorgan Chase (JPM), but still richer than that of many U.S. regional banks. Heading into Q2 2025, Bank of America's provisioning appears notably conservative. The bank's macroeconomic outlook assumes an unemployment rate of just below 5% by the end of 2025, remaining at that level through 2026, which is slightly more pessimistic than the Federal Reserve's projection of 4.5% for both years. Similarly, Bank of America forecasts 1% GDP growth in Q4 2025, undercutting the Fed's more optimistic estimate of 1.4%. In short, Bank of America's current reserves already reflect a cautious economic view, making it unlikely to build a significant provision in Q2 2025. The bank appears to have already accounted for a moderate economic slowdown later this year and into 2026. Analysts expect Bank of America to deliver earnings of $0.90/share in Q2 2025, up 8% year-over-year. This would represent a marked slowdown from the 18% annual increase observed in the first quarter of 2025. I believe the projected 8% EPS growth is overly conservative. Based on my estimates, share repurchases alone could contribute around 5% EPS growth. Additionally, Bank of America is likely to raise its net interest income (NII) guidance, as the Federal Reserve is now expected to deliver only two rate cuts in 2025, compared to the four cuts the bank had initially anticipated in its own outlook. I also expect slightly stronger performance from the Global Markets division, supported by heightened market volatility early in Q2 2025, which could contribute a paltry $0.02 per share to earnings. In summary, I expect Bank of America to modestly beat consensus earnings estimates, driven by conservative provisioning, upward NII revisions, and a slight lift from trading activity. My forecast is EPS of approximately $0.92 for Q2 2025. Based on my projections, Bank of America is on track to deliver earnings of approximately $3.57 per share in 2025, assuming consistent 8% growth in both Q3 and Q4 of 2024. This would translate to a return on tangible book value of around 13% for the year. However, this solid profitability appears to be largely priced in, with BAC stock trading at 1.66x its tangible book value of $27.12 per share. Its 2025 P/E multiple of 12.6x is more attractive than that of large peers like JPMorgan Chase (14.6x), but still above the average for regional banks, which trade closer to 10.7x forward earnings. Looking ahead to 2026, earnings growth is expected to moderate, with no repeat of the Global Markets tailwind and potential pressure from anticipated Fed rate cuts. Given this outlook, I believe a Hold rating is appropriate for BAC at current levels. This cautious stance is also supported by Berkshire Hathaway's ongoing reduction in its BAC stake, despite the stock remaining the firm's fourth-largest holding, which comprises 10.19% of Buffett's portfolio. The limited upside potential suggests it's wise to stay neutral for now. Turning to Wall Street, Bank of America earns a Strong Buy consensus rating based on 18 Buy and 2 Hold ratings over the past three months. Notably, not a single analyst is bearish on Bank of America. The average BAC stock price target is $49.38, implying a 9% potential upside. Bank of America's macroeconomic outlook remains more conservative than the Federal Reserve's, which suggests its earnings are better insulated in the event of a slowdown in U.S. economic activity later in 2025 and into 2026. I expect BAC to slightly beat Q2 2025 earnings estimates, supported by stronger net interest income, continued share repurchases, and a modest profitability boost from the Global Markets division. That said, I remain neutral on the stock. Like Warren Buffett, who has recently trimmed Berkshire's position in BAC, I believe the bank's solid profitability is already reflected in the stock's price, which trades at 1.66x tangible book value. Lastly, while Wall Street analysts maintain a Strong Buy rating, the implied upside of just 9.59% suggests limited near-term reward for new investors at current levels. Bill Belichick-Jordon Hudson drama revealed in new emails

Emails obtained by WRAL show Bill Belichick addressing the controversy over his romantic and professional relationship with Jordon Hudson. The relationship between the legendary coach and the 24-year-old model has drawn national scrutiny after a controversial "CBS Sunday Morning" interview. Hudson declared, "We're not talking about that" when Belichick was asked about how the couple met. Belichick claimed in one email that CBS "secretly" had a camera focused on Hudson despite the model requesting to sit off camera. "Secretly, CBS had a camera focused on Jordon where Lead producer Gabe instructed her to sit," Belichick reportedly wrote. Belichick elaborated on why the question of how they met was not answered. "I met Jordon randomly on a flight to Palm Beach in 2021. That is no secret. Jordon was not dodging the specific question regarding how we met, but rather was preventing the interview from continuing to probe into personal matters," the email said. Belichick also addressed why Hudson was present at the interview to begin with. He believed the interview would be focused on his book, "The Art of Winning: Lessons from a Life in Football." "Jordon was present at the CBS interview because David Kass, the Simon & Schuster publicist, was not there," Belichick wrote, referring to the publisher of his book. "I included Jordon in the book acknowledgments because she was a creative contributor to the book, including having the idea for formatting the 4 special pages in the book." In another email, Belichick addressed reports that he requested to have Hudson copied on every email sent to him. "Jordon and I have both a personal & professional relationship," Belchick wrote in the email. "This is not a secret. Jordon assists me with my personal media, which is why I asked UNC to forward media requests (E.G. CBS 60 Minutes) to her. Jordon has zero involvement in the UNC football program, beyond the degree that my personal media intersects with it." Belichick released a statement saying he was "surprised" about getting the questions about his relationship and that when Hudson had stepped in, she was doing her job. He went on to accuse CBS of creating a "false narrative" with so-called "selectively edited clips." CBS responded, disagreeing with Belichick's version of events. In a separate interview with ESPN, Belichick insisted Hudson is not involved with UNC football. Seth Rogen Explains Why His ‘Gigli' Audition Tape Would 'End My Career' If It Leaked

More than 20 years after the movie that launched Bennifer, Seth Rogen recently recalled his audition for 2003's Gigli. The 3x Golden Globe nominee explained that he was 'an aspiring young actor' when he auditioned for the role of mentally challenged hostage Brian, who was ultimately portrayed by Justin Bartha in the Ben Affleck/Jennifer Lopez romantic comedy crime flick. 'And thank god it was mostly physical VHS tapes and stuff like that that was being used when I was auditioning for things, because the things I auditioned for, in retrospect, if they were out there in the world, they would end my career very, very fast, I believe.' Rogen recalled Gigli as an example. 'I auditioned for this boy with a cognitive disability. And I don't think the script was written in what, by today's standards, would be the most sensitive portrayal of a boy with a cognitive disability,' he noted. Explaining that he was eager to work with the film's 'great director' Martin Brest, Rogen said, 'I wanted to leave an impression.' 'I don't think I wore a helmet in to the audition itself, but it was at play,' he said with a laugh. 'And I'm tempted to do an impression of what I did, but I can't even do it. I can't. That's how bad it was. It's so bad. I dare not even portray what I did in this audition. Because I went for it. I saw myself at the Oscars.' Rogen added, 'Truthfully, if that tape was out [in] the world today, this would be the last interview you ever saw me do. Other than, like, my apology tour. Please, if you have it, burn it. Please sell it to me. I will buy it.' The Studio star definitely dodged a bullet, as the movie barely surpassed $7 million globally, currently holding a 6% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes.
