Twelve-year-old Filipina gymnast wins 4 medals at GAP Challenge, earns spot on PH national team
Filipina artistic gymnast Jhodelle Chavez, 12 years old, delivered a stellar performance at the GAP Challenge 2025 in Manila, winning four medals across multiple events.
Representing Italy, the Batangas-born athlete showcased her strength and artistry at the international gymnastics competition held from March 29 to 30.

Chavez secured a gold medal in the Beam exercise, two silver medals in the Uneven Bars and Overall/Individual All-Around categories, and a bronze in Floor Exercise under the HP4 level.

The event gathered top gymnasts from different countries, many of whom were vying for a spot on the Philippine National Team.
'Masayang-masaya kami kasi importante itong GAP Challenge kay Jody. talagang sinadya lang namin ang competition,' her mother Jonalyn shared, adding that their family flew back to the Philippines just for the 10-day trip to attend the competition.
Now officially part of the Philippine National Gymnastics Team, Chavez will return to Italy to continue her high school studies while training under Coach Monica degli Uberti of CAG Napoli. Her next international competition will be in Italy this April, followed by the National Championships in Riccione, Italy, this May.
Jhodelle, who turns 13 this June, has already won the Italian national title for three consecutive years. Her consistent performance and dedication continue to inspire young gymnasts in the Philippines and abroad.
Her journey shows how passion and hard work can take young Filipinas to international platforms while bringing pride to the country with every victory.

Father and son training partnership John and Thady Gosden celebrated a big race double on the second day of Royal Ascot on Wednesday with Ombudsman landing the Group One Prince of Wales's Stakes. Buick, 36, having had a tough time released his pent up emotion, punching the air in delight as he passed the post. 'It has been a difficult few days,' said Buick. 'I have got a little bit of experience so I try and stay level, I have a lot of good rides. 'You look forward right?' John Gosden, for whom it was a 70th Royal Ascot winner, said Buick had been 'patient and rewarded'. Earlier the Gosdens had enjoyed a record-extending sixth win in the Group Two Duke of Cambridge Stakes. Australia-based New Zealander jockey James McDonald swooped to win on Crimson Advocate. 'Absolutely delighted, pleasure to ride a winner for the group (the Emir of Qatar's Wathnan Racing for whom it was their third winner of this year's edition),' said MacDonald, recording his fifth Royal Ascot winner. 'I am very lucky to be jogging on the right spot at the right time. 'Even when you do not have a fancied horse in a race here it is a very special, elegant and graceful place to ride.' Carmers provided Irish trainer Paddy Twomey with a win in the Group Two Queen's Vase with his first ever winner at the meeting, a second win for jockey Billy Lee this week. For owner Fiona Carmichael it was an emotional victory as the horse is named after her late husband. 'This is all fairly new to me,' said Carmichael, who also bred the winner. 'I am living the dream. What happens further down the line gives me something to look forward to as he could run in the St Leger.' Lee, who rare for a flat jockey has also ridden winners at Cheltenham and Aintree in the past eight months, said he was a very lucky man. 'There are plenty of good lads based in Ireland who do not get the chance like myself and Colin Keane.' It's been three years since trainer Charlie Appleby cracked open the champagne in terms of a Royal Ascot winner, and he had to hide his disappointment as favourite Cinderella's Dream finished second. Duckett shines as England beat West Indies by 37 runs to secure T20 series sweep
Ben Duckett blasted a whirlwind 84 from 46 balls as England posted their second highest T20 International score of 248 for three before restricting West Indies to 211 for eight to win by 37 runs and sweep the three-game series on Tuesday. West Indies elected to bowl but could not find consistency in line and length on a flat batting wicket and were carted around the Rose Bowl as England smashed 15 sixes in the innings on the way to their imposing score. Opener Jamie Smith contributed 60 from 26 balls for his first T20 international half-century as England reached 135-1 at the midway point of their innings, their highest 10-over score. West Indies were always struggling in their chase as they lost wickets at regular intervals but their total was boosted by a fine unbeaten 79 from 45 balls by Rovman Powell before they ran out of deliveries. The match aggregate of 459 runs is the highest in a T20 international in England, as the home side added win to their sweep of the three-game One-Day International series, a perfect start for new white ball captain Harry Brook. 'Very pleased, the lads put a really good shift in and played some exceptional cricket,' Brook told Sky Sports. 'I like the depth in the batting, it gives the lads at the top the license to get us off to a fast start and we saw that tonight.' Openers Smith and Duckett put on 120 in 63 deliveries for the first wicket. No line or length was safe as the pair used invention and daring to move around the crease and find boundaries at will.
