Public participation key to success of Swarnandhra

Vijayawada: Public participation is very vital for the success of Swarnandhra – Swachh Andhra initiative being implemented by the State government, said G Jayalakshmi, Special officer, NTR district and Chief Commissioner of Land Administration (CCLA). She was the chief guest at Swarnandhra programme organised at VMC circle-2 office in Satyanarayanapuram on Saturday.
The civic body conducted the program with the theme 'Beat the Heat'. She inspected the stalls arranged by VMC at the circle officer and planted the saplings.
Later addressing the meeting, special officer Jayalakshmi said the objectives set by the government can be reached with the participation of the people. She said we can beat the heat by growing trees and plants. She said growing trees is the only solution to get protection from heat. She said the scope for growing of trees is limited in urban areas due to concrete structures. She suggested the plants and trees can be grown in both public and private places. Jayalakshmi said the district administration is taking steps to implement the plastic ban successfully. VMC commissioner HM Dhyana Chandra said the VMC is conducting Swarna Andhra and Swatchandhra programme on every third Saturday and this month the programme is organized with the slogan Beat the Heat. He called upon the people to grow trees and suggested the people to take steps for the terrace gardening.
Vijayawada central MLA Bonda Umamaheswara Rao stressed the need to grow trees and avoid the use of single used plastic. He said single used plastic is very harmful to the mankind. He suggested the people to be cautious in the summer. NTR district Revenue Divisional officer K Chaitanya, additional commissioner projects Dr D Chandra Sekhar, chief Engineer, VMC R Srinath Reddy and other officials and staff attended the programme.

Yoga practice should not end with month-long campaign, Collector tells people

The month-long 'Yogandhra' campaign, which began on May 21 and culminated with the 11th International Yoga Day celebrations on Saturday, was launched to encourage the public to incorporate yoga in their daily lives, said NTR District Collector G. Lakshmisha. Speaking at the Yoga Day celebrations at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation (IGMC) Stadium in Vijayawada, the Collector said that while thousands of people participated every day in the programme in the district, the practice should not end with the campaign. 'The month-long celebration should only be a beginning for the public, not the end,' he added. According to the district officials, around 5,000 people participated in the programme. Chief Commissioner of Land Administration G. Jayalakshmi, Police Commissioner S.V. Rajasekhar Babu, Joint Collector S. Ilakkiya and others were also present. In the past month, the administration organised yoga programmes in the city streets, tourist destinations, historical sites and also on the Krishna river, the Collector said. Around 8,50,000 people in 5,454 places within the limits of 605 village/ward secretariats took part in the yoga programmes, the Collector added. Yoga is a gift that nature has bestowed upon us to remain mentally and physically fit, the Collector said, while listing out the benefits of practising it every day. Later, he congratulated the members of Yoga Association on their role in the Floating Yoga programme held recently. The programme had received wide admiration. On Saturday, around 200 people performed yoga in the Krishna river in an event organised by the Aqua Devils Swimming Association. In Krishna district, the programme was organised on the premises of Sri Viswasanthi Educational Institutions in Vuyyuru. Along with District Collector D.K. Balaji, Penamaluru MLA Bode Prasad, Machilipatnam MP Vallabhaneni Balashowry, APSRTC Chairman K. Narayana Rao, and Superintendent of Police (SP) R. Gangadhar Rao also took part. A green carpet was laid on the ground for the students and officials to perform yoga. Later, breakfast was arranged for those who took part in the programme. Medical camps were also set up. Cultural programmes and an award ceremony followed, where yoga instructors and students were felicitated.

VMC to deploy 200 contract swimmers for monsoon rescue operations

Vadodara: For the first time in its history, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) will engage 200 swimmers on contract for monsoon rescue operations, following a proposal cleared by the standing committee on Friday. The initiative comes in the wake of last year's unprecedented floods and aims to strengthen the city's emergency response system. The swimmers will be deployed for three months starting in July and will function as rescue volunteers under the fire department. According to officials, the swimmers will be hired through a contractor rather than directly by the civic body. A Mehsana-based agency has been selected for the task, and VMC will pay Rs 95.58 lakh for providing the trained personnel. "This is the first time swimmers are being brought in through such a contractual arrangement," said Sheetal Mistry, chairman of the standing committee. "The administration had earlier considered hiring them directly, but we eventually agreed to engage them through an agency." The civic body has already undertaken significant work on the Vishwamitri river, stormwater drains, ponds, reservoirs, and recharge wells, but officials said they were not willing to take any risks during the upcoming monsoon. VMC typically employs skilled workers, including some fire department drivers, through agencies on a daily-wage basis. The same system will be used to engage the swimmers.

Chittoor gears up for Yoga Day fete, 9 lakh likely to participate

The district administration is geared up for the 11th International Yoga Day celebrations scheduled at the Mesanical Grounds here on Saturday (June 21). Over 9 lakh people are expected to take part in the massive programme across 5,808 habitations in the district. Addressing the media here on Friday (June 20), District Collector Sumit Kumar stressed on the need for proper planning and prompt execution of the event. Lauding the officials, NGOs, and public groups for the State-led 'Yogandhra 2025' campaign, the Collector urged officials not to lose momentum and ensure that each venue has adequate facilities, with top priority to drinking water, snacks, toilets, and medical camps. Mr. Kumar instructed the officials to mobilise the yoga participants based on the capacity of each venue. He said that the public address systems, photo, and videography were mandatory, and the footage should be uploaded on the official app by 10 am of the same day. The Collector directed the special officers at the mandal level, municipal commissioners, and MPDOs, to participate and oversee arrangements. He said that the public representatives from village to district levels should be formally invited to give a fillip to the event. The programme will be held at the Mesanical Grounds from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. The Collector said that Yoga instructors will be posted at all the venues to guide the participants.
