Five-star Duleek on the rise as they see off Meath neighbours

DULEEK 5
Premier Division
DULEEK moved up to second in the Premier Division with this thumping win away to Parkvilla on Friday night.
It was very much a performance reminiscent of Duleek when they were in the First Division last season, with Dylan O'Boyle having a hand in four of the five goals at Claremont Stadium.
Parkvilla had only lost once previously in all competitions this season, that coming in the Leinster Junior Cup, but Duleek hit the front on 18 minutes when Matthew Noone picked out Josh O'Reilly who scored his first Premier Division goal for the club.
Two minutes later Bobby Brady and O'Boyle combined for the latter to score his seventh goal of the campaign in total.
Brady was dominating the right wing and was proving to be a fulcrum for a lot of Duleek's early attacks. He went on to score Duleek's third goal on 27 minutes when, with a reverse of the second, O'Boyle supplied the pass for Brady to smash home.
Jayden Clarke was industrious and he was unlucky not to get his name on the scoresheet. He met a cross with a sweet headed connection, but his effort smashed back off the post with the Parkvilla keeper rooted to the spot.
Duleek were very much on top at this stage, with Parkvilla struggling to get into the game, but the hosts did pull one back on the half-hour mark when Jonathan Clear was beaten by a well-struck shot.
The teams then exchanged goals as Brady restored Duleek's three-goal lead for all of four minutes, before Parkvilla made it 4-2.
That was the score at half-time, but just four minutes into the second-half Duleek added a fifth. O'Boyle put O'Reilly through and he duly secured his brace for the evening.
It looked as if Duleek would add more to their total. Having made his first-team debut the previous week, Tom Reilly came on for the final half-hour in central midfield and put in a good performance.

Duleek almost netted a sixth goal in the closing stages as substitute Karl Dyas cut in from the left and let fly, but his dipping shot hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced away to safety.
Duleek are on the road again this coming Friday night as they return to Dundalk to face Bellurgan United in the last 16 of the Kilmessan Shield.
Bryan Murphy's side will be hoping to avenge their recent 3-2 defeat at the hands of the in-form Cooley Peninsula side in the league.
Duleek: Jonathan Clear, Ben Boyce (Sean Kennedy), James Traynor, Eoin Tierney, Robbie Daly, Jamie McCarthy, Bobby Brady, Matthew Noone (Tom Reilly), Dylan O'Boyle (Cormac McGroggan), Josh O'Reilly (Karl Dyas), Jayden Clarke.

Drogheda finish difficult week on a high as they beat Sligo and leapfrog Bohs

Drogheda United 1 Sligo Rovers 0 Barry Landy reports from Weavers Park DOUGLAS JAMES-TAYLOR'S first league goal from open play in 301 days ensured Kevin Doherty's team ended a chastening week on a high note in front of their home supporters. Drogheda will have been cheered even more so by the fact that Bohemians defeat has seen them leapfrog the Gypsies into second position in the Premier Division. Advertisement Drogheda's European expulsion means that their quest to finish in the top three or four places in the League of Ireland takes on a much greater significance now. Their players will be keen to qualify once again and get an opportunity lost by no fault of their own. James-Taylor hadn't hit an open play goal since his header in the FAI Cup semi-final last October. He has battled with a thigh injury this term though and his early strike against Sligo Rovers as just his second of the season. Darragh Markey and Cian Kavanagh compete. Laszlo Geczo / INPHO Laszlo Geczo / INPHO / INPHO His loan spell ends in just 10 days time. The striker belongs to United's sister club Walsall – he has certainly been one of the positives of their multi-club model involvement. If this was to his final home outing for the club, he provided a memorable send-off. There were just three minutes on the clock when Warren Davis harried Jad Hakiki off the ball and midfield and scurried forward. He fed James-Taylor on the edge of the area and his right foot strike left goalkeeper Sam Sargeant with no chance. John Russell will likely spend most of his long journey home wondering how Sligo failed to register at Sullivan & Lambe Park. His side created a host of guilt-edged chances. Misfortune and misfire contributed to a somehow scoreless performance. Luke Dennison saved smartly from Wilson Waweru's flick and then the goalkeeper held Owen Elding's shot from a Will Fitzgerald pull-back. Sligo were lively, incisive and constantly on the front-foot. But the hosts retained an attacking threat at all times. Davis managed to sky an effort from eight yards. It looked harder to miss than score. Andrew Quinn and James-Taylor both went close to doubling the Drogs lead too and Conor Kane's rasping drive came off the bar. After half-time, Sligo assumed control and the most clear-cut chances were theirs. Fitzgerald and Elding tested the goalkeeper while Hakiki and substitute Cian Kavanagh missed glorious openings. When Elding missed a chance to touch an inviting cross into the net in injury time, Sligo's time was up. As Drogheda owner and co-chairman Ben Boycott watched on from the sidelines, his team at least demonstrated that for failings off the pitch, they are still motoring along nicely on it. Drogheda up to second after ending turbulent week on a high

Drogheda United kissed goodbye to their European dream this week and if their victory over Sligo Rovers was another farewell of sorts, it was certainly more joyous. Douglas James-Taylor's fourth minute goal proved the difference in the end as United climbed back above Bohemians and into second place in the Premier Division. Their quest for European qualification via the league route takes on a whole different dimension now in light of their expulsion from the UEFA Conference League this summer. While a good display against Shamrock Rovers on Monday did not deliver a positive result, they displayed a determination and rigour against Sligo that will likely form the backbone of the remainder of their season. James-Taylor hadn't hit an open play goal of any description since his header in the FAI Cup semi-final last October. He has battled with a thigh injury this term though and his early strike against Sligo Rovers as just his second of the season. His loan spell ends in just 10 days time. The striker belongs to United's sister club Walsall and has certainly been one of the positives of their multi-club model involvement. If this was to his final home outing for the club, he provided a memorable send-off. There were just three minutes on the clock when Warren Davis harried Jad Hakiki off the ball and midfield and scurried forward. Somehow, there were no more in the opening 45 minutes. Davis failed to get a shot on target from eight yards when teed up by his strike-partner and Andy Quinn curled an effort just over the bar. In first half injury time, Conor Kane rattled the joint of crossbar and post. That was soon after a 60-yard run from Quinn that ended with James-Taylor poking a shot just wide of the goal. Sligo – who lost Gareth McElroy to concussion – played their part in a pulsating first half too. Wilson Waweru's near post flick was saved by Luke Dennison and then the Drogs goalkeeper was behind Owen Elding's shot from Will Fitzgerald's pull back. John Russell's team were producing quick, incisive play in dangerous areas. United's defence was being made to work hard for their clean sheet. They had the best chance of the opening minutes of the second half. Will Fitzgerald's volley was scooped over the bar by United's Californian stopper. Later on, both Hakiki and substitute Cian Kavanagh were guilty of failing to find the target when on each occasion, the net should have rippled. Both were especially damning on a night when a good Bit O'Red display was undermined by misfortune and misfire in front of goal. As expected, Drogheda owner and co-chairman Ben Boycott was present at the game. He addressed Kevin Doherty and his players in light of their UEFA Conference League expulsion. The Trivela Group CEO was also seen speaking to supporters prior to kick-off, likely offering apologies and assurances in equal measure. His team at least demonstrated that for failings off the pitch, they are still motoring along nicely on it. Drogheda United: Luke Dennison; George Cooper, Conor Keeley, Andrew Quinn; Kieran Cruise (Darragh Markey, 46), Luke Heeney, Shane Farrell, Conor Kane; Ryan Brennan; Douglas James-Taylor, Warren Davis (Thomas Oluwa, 79). Sligo Rovers: Sam Sargeant; Conor Reynolds, Gareth McElroy (Kyle McDonagh, 35), John Mahon, Reece Hutchinson; Jake Doyle-Hayes, Stephen Mallon (Oskar Van Hattum, 69); Owen Elding, Jad Hakiki (Francely Lomboto, 83), Will Fitzgerald; Wilson Waweru (Cian Kavanagh, 69).

Galway humble St Pats with first half blitz

SSE Airtricity Premier Division: Galway United 3 St. Patrick's Athletic 1 St. Patrick's Athletic's disappointing season reached a nadir in Galway, when they were humbled by a less celebrated but more effective side on the night. Two unforced errors in the first eleven minutes sealed their fate. However, all metrics would have favoured the home team who were in charge physically and territorially in a bruising opening 30 minutes for the visitors. Pat's were caught cold with the first. Evan Watts was able to lash a kickout 80 yards that Ed McCarthy picked up on the edge of the box, turned, shot and scored before Joe Redmond or Tom Grivosti could recover. There was further dysfunction for the second. Joseph Anang was a long way from home when he tried to deliver long. Instead, he smashed it straight off David Hurley who picked it up in his own half on the right and curled beautifully into an empty net. United kept their foot down and would have hoped for more joy, except for some good scrambling from Anang and errant finishing. There were some flashes of the underlying excellence of the away team. Mason Melia brought the best from Watts before Simon Power beat him in the corner. When Rob Slevin extended the lead again to 3-1 shortly after, it was no less than his side deserved. Pat's improved after the break. Power was prominent on the right. Sean Hoare and Jamie Lennon reasserted some control. The latter even came close from the edge of the area. The Pat's bench were up in arms, thinking the impressive Melia was wrongly denied a penalty at a time that could really mattered. Hoare, Chris Forrester and Brandon Kavanagh all came off the bench in a bid to salvage something. There was plenty of possession, some neat interplay but few chances. Kavanagh, who has broken Galway hearts before with a free-kick when with Bray, lined up a few dangerous free-kicks from the edge of the box. The second drew a second incredible save from the Welsh youngster who then pulled off another cracking stop from Hoare. The heroics gave Stephen Kenny an out to point out the heroics of the 'keeper. However, he is seasoned enough to know that the problems run deeper with his side and he has a job on to turn it around in time for Derry on Monday.
