The King and Idris Elba team up for new Netflix documentary film

Leader Live3 days ago

The film will explore The King's Trust – a youth charity set up by Charles when he was the Prince of Wales, as it celebrates its 50th anniversary – to highlight how the charity has helped young people around the world, documenting 'the power of believing in young people'.
The Luther star, who was a beneficiary of a grant from the trust, will accompany the King as he shares insights into his support for the charity.
Elba said: 'The King's Trust gave me an opportunity that changed my life.
'At a time when I didn't have the resources to pursue my ambitions, they offered real, practical support — including financial help — that helped me take those first steps to advance my career.
'Around the world, millions are still waiting for that one door to open. This documentary is about shining a light on what's possible when it does — and why the work of The King's Trust remains so important.'
Formerly known as The Prince's Trust, the charity was set up by Charles to help disadvantaged young people overcome challenging circumstances, get into employment or launch their own businesses.
It has since become one of the UK's leading youth organisations and has helped more than 1.3 million young people to date with celebrity ambassadors including former England football manager Sir Gareth Southgate and presenters Ant and Dec.
Jonathan Townsend, UK chief executive of The King's Trust, said: 'At its heart, this is a documentary about the power of believing in young people. It's about an idea, driven by a young Prince who was determined to make a positive difference, that when young people are supported to succeed, we all succeed.
'Almost 50 years on, the momentum behind this idea has seen more than 1.3 million young people supported in over 20 countries around the world, including more than a million in the UK alone, through the work of The King's Trust.
'Nobody understands the impact of this work better than those who have experienced the support we offer first hand. As a long-term supporter and former beneficiary of The Trust himself, Idris will undoubtedly bring a unique perspective to this groundbreaking documentary as he peels back the layers of our story and shows how our life-changing work is as relevant today as it has ever been.'
The film will be directed by Bafta-winning filmmaker Ashley Francis-Roy, with young people supported by the Trust helping the production team to build experience in film and television.
The documentary is produced by 22 Summers, the production company co-founded by Elba, and due to be released in autumn 2026.

Tom Grennan undergoes surgery to remove metal plates from his jaw

Chart-topping singer Tom Grennan required surgery on an old jaw injury (Picture: John Phillips/Bafta/Getty Images for Bafta) Tom Grennan has undergone some pretty intense surgery to remove metal plates from his jaw. The 30-year-old singer was hospitalised at the age of 18 after being attacked by a group of strangers in his hometown of Bedford. As a result, he needed to have screws and metal plates fitted to his jaw to fix his injuries. However, the plates recently started to cause complications, so he underwent another operation earlier this year to have them taken out. He told The Times newspaper: 'They were pushing themselves out of my gums … [Having surgery] was a relief for me. I'm no longer reminded of that time in my life. 'It was like I closed the door, and that was me being released, I suppose.' The songwriter started experiencing complications with the metal plates in his jaw (Picture: Instagram) At the age of 18, Tom was attacked by a group of strangers in his hometown (Picture: Farrell/Backgrid) During the interview, Tom admitted the attack left him with lasting physical and mental injuries, and it took him years to recover. 'I think that was the first time my world came crashing down, the first time I really knew what it was like to be depressed, to feel suicidal, like nobody loved me. 'From one little thing that somebody did. One punch caused an earthquake, a tsunami. It took me years to open up.' However, he credited the trauma from the attack with leading him to embrace songwriting and kickstart his creativity. 'The attack was horrible, but it allowed me to open up another part of my mind. I'd never written a song before it,' he revealed. As well as having surgery on his jaw this year, Tom also went under the knife to fix a tendon injury, and he recently admitted the recovery process has been tough as he battled anxiety issues. Tom is admired by fans for speaking openly about his mental health (Picture: David Fisher/Global/Shutterstock) Tom told MailOnline last month: 'I'm a person like everybody who suffers with anxiety and mental health. 'I've got a bad ankle; I've had to have an operation to get a tendon rebuilt, so I was in a boot for eight weeks. It's not good; it's a long recovery. 'So we'll see what I can do. I'm going to have to get it strapped up—I'm still not comfortable with it. I think that's where a lot of my anxiousness over the past few months has come from.' The Little Bit of Love hitmaker has long spoken openly about his mental health. In conversation with Roman Kemp for mental health charity YoungMinds last year, Tom reflected on feeling like he was in a 'sinking hole' when he was younger. 'I couldn't get out of bed,' he admitted. 'I thought the whole world was against me. I thought I wasn't good enough. I never had been somebody who would talk about my feelings, especially to my friends and not to my parents, either. In recent years, he's become one of the most recognisable voices on UK radio (Picture: PA Wire) Later this year, Tom will head out on his biggest tour to date, performing in arenas up and down the country (Picture: Farrell/Backgrid) 'So then I started to just write little notes in a notepad and then picked up a guitar.' As he began processing his own emotions, it also allowed Tom to open up to his mum and form a deeper connection with her. The star first found fame as the guest vocalist on Chase & Status's All Goes Wrong in 2016 and has gone on to become a huge presence in the UK music scene. Tom released his debut album in 2018, which peaked at number five in the charts, before his next two records both hit number one. Later this year, he'll embark on his biggest ever tour, playing in arenas across the country. Got a story? Sting's heartwrenching tribute to drummer who collapsed live on stage

Sting shared a touching tribute to The Christians drummer Lionel Duke, who suffered a cardiac arrest while on stage in Liverpool over the weekend Sting shared a moving tribute to The Christians' Lionel Duke following his cardiac arrest on stage. The drummer who was supporting the legendary musician in Liverpool left fans concerned after he appeared to collapse before going into arrest at the iconic Pier Head on Sunday. Lead singer of the band, Garry, requested urgent assistance from the medical teams before a privacy screen was set up on stage. It was during this time that medics worked rapidly to perform CPR on Lionel, whose heart had stopped beating. ‌ Lionel was subsequently rushed to the hospital via ambulance after the emergency staff managed to resuscitate him. But while many wondered whether the show would continue, Sting, 73, later took to the stage and reassured fans who had packed the waterfront that Lionel was doing ok and was receiving treatment. ‌ One fan who was in attendance said: "We were kept updated, and Sting sang 'Fragile' after asking us all to hold Lionel in our thoughts." A second penned: "We were at the Waterfront - Sting was updating us all in the crowd and wished Lionel well and encouraged us all to think for him and sang Fragile as the final song for the evening." While on stage, the Grammy Award-winning musician said: "The drummer in the band before is OK. He's in hospital. All of us are praying he's going to be fine. Our thoughts are with him." As the sad incident unfolded, event organisers kept fans updated throughout with messages being displayed on huge screens. One read: "We appreciate your patience and understanding. Medical staff are with the performer, and we will provide an update as soon as we can." Shortly after, a spokesperson for the band, who is believed to be their manager, shared an update with fans – explaining that Lionel had suffered a cardiac arrest. She said: "We're really hoping he is going to make it. He didn't have a pulse; he's got one now, we think. Thank you so much." The band also encouraged Sting to perform. Earlier today, the band issued a statement on social media on Lionel's condition, explaining they are still awaiting news. ‌ They said: "Thank you so much to all the many many messages regarding our drummer Lionel Duke who suffered a cardiac arrest while performing at tonight's amazing concert ahead of Sting. We are awaiting news from the Heart and Chest hospital at Broad Green and thank the phenomenal team of medics present from On The Waterfront Liverpool team who stepped in so swiftly to help our poor Lionel." Fans of the group rushed to offer their support, with one praising the medical team for their swift response. They said: "Was at the gig in the front seen it all unfold what swift action by his band and first aid responders and the event staff for making it dignified by shielding Lionel with a make shift curtain whilst they performed the c.p.r I know he is in good hands at Broadgreen." A second went on to write: "It was terrifying to see poor Lionel slump forward. I was so proud of the respect the Liverpool crowd showed falling silent, no photos and many people turned around. We were kept updated, and Sting sang 'fragile' after asking us all to hold Lionel in our thoughts. Wishing him a speedy recovery. He is in good hands at Broadgreen." Another typed: "It was very worrying when Lionel slumped forwards onto his drums. Seeing the black screens go up. They were working on him on the stage for a while. I'm so pleased he is doing OK. It was frightening to see. Best wishes to Lionel." "It was so awful to witness! Sending love and positive energy for a speedy recovery for Lionel. And sending love to Garry and the rest of the band too who must have been incredibly shaken," added a fourth.
