Piastri ‘caught sleeping' by Verstappen stunner, ‘weak' McLaren slammed

Oscar Piastri's lead in the Formula One championship has been shaved to 13 points after Max Verstappen produced one of the best overtakes of his career to win the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
Piastri started on pole position and got a decent start off the line, only to fall victim to a spectacular piece of late braking by Verstappen, who snatched the lead with a sweeping lunge on the first lap.

From then on it was always going to be difficult for Piastri to take the win. He quickly pitted to change from medium to hard tyres and worked his way through the field in heavy traffic — the early pit stop was arguably the wrong strategy call.
But two Safety Car periods played perfectly into Verstappen's hands, allowing the world champion to get two free pit stops and maintain first position.
A Safety Car late in the race set the stage for a frenetic finish, with a very slow Lando Norris pit stop allowing Piastri to move into second place for the closing stages of the race.

But Piastri opted not to pit again and his hard tyres were 20 laps older than Norris' tyres, and the Brit overtook his teammate as the McLarens raced wheel to wheel for the first time this season.
Verstappen described his move on Piastri as 'sending it around the outside', adding it 'unleashed our pace' once the Red Bull was in clear air in the lead.
Sky Sports expert commentator Anthony Davidson wondered whether Piastri could have been more aggressive at the start to shut the door on Verstappen.
'I think he'll be kicking himself a bit for Turn 1 and Turn 2 through into Tamburello,' Davidson said.
'When he looks back at that, I'm sure he'll be thinking he could have braked later, could have got my elbows out a little bit more.
'You have to be on your absolute A-game when you've got Verstappen bearing down on you in the first couple of corners. You know he's going to go for it.'
Former F1 world Jacques Villeneuve said: 'It was a copy of Jeddah except he (Piastri) didn't close the door, he left enough space because he was caught sleeping.'
In somewhat awkward scenes post-race, Piastri was made to re-watch Verstappen's overtake on him on a TV in the cooldown room.

Piastri had been aiming to join Ayrton Senna as the only McLaren drivers to win four races to be, but it wasn't to be for the 24-year-old.
He still leads the championship on 146 points, 13 clear of Norris and 22 ahead of Verstappen.
'I just braked too early,' Piastri said.
'It was a good move by Max. Disappointing obviously but I think we made a few wrong calls after that anyway. Not our best Sunday.
'Well done to Max and Red Bull. It was a good move but also they had pace today.
'I tried my best to hang onto second but just had nowhere near enough grip. So third it is.
Asked about racing Norris, Piastri said: 'It was probably inevitably that he was going to get past, but I wasn't going to give up without a fight.'
Norris said: 'Max drove a good race today. We had a good little battle at the end between Oscar and myself, which is always tense, but always good fun.
'For us as a team, second and third is great. Of course you'd love to be up there fighting against Max, but they were too good for us today.'
It's Verstappen's 65th career win and he equals Michael Schumacher with the most podiums with the same team (116).

World champion slams 'weak' McLaren
Villenueve criticised McLaren for not ordering Piastri to let Norris past after the Virtual Safety Car car so the Brit could attempt to catch Verstappen in the final 10 laps.
'They (McLaren) show weakness basically,' the 1997 world champion said on Sky Sports.
'They don't show the strength Red Bull are showing year after year. It's as if they're afraid to be aggressive to try and win the drivers' championship and they're afraid to go against Piastri, it's really odd.
'Piastri messed up that first corner. He got caught out sleeping. He should never have come out of that corner second.

Jacque Villeneuve labelled McLaren's strategy weak. Photo:/AFP.
'On the restart, McLaren knew it was a matter of laps before Norris would overtake Piastri with the tyre difference. So why make him lose three laps instead of giving him a shot at Verstappen?
'Verstappen is in the championship (battle), you don't want to give him wins. That's more points for him.
'They (McLaren) seem to be happy with second and third. McLaren has a car where a good weekend is first and second. Anything less is barely acceptable, but they seem to be happy with second and third.'
Villenueve said McLaren's strategy decisions shows 'a lack of 'let's go for it''.
F1's European triple header continues next weekend at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Wow! Max Verstappen has taken the lead of the race with a stunning pass on Piastri on the first chicane of the race.
Piastri got a decent start off the line before Verstappen came up alongside him and broke later than the Aussie, edging past him in a sensational sweeping overtake.
'That's exactly what Oscar Piastri didn't want to happen,' Sky Sports commentator Harry Benjamin said, describing the move as 'inch perfect'. 'Piastri just not aggressive enough there. That is surely one of the all-time Turn 1 moves.' Max Verstappen overtakes Oscar Piastri at the start of the race. Photo: Fox Sports.
Expert commentator Anthony Davidson said: 'It was an amazing late braking effort from Max Verstappen. Piastri gave him room, there easily could have been contact.

Verstappen drove a flawless race and benefited from the timing of a Virtual Safety Car and Safety Car that allowed him not to lose any time on his two pit stops.
It's the second victory of the year for Verstappen, and his fourth consecutive win in IMola.

It took a few laps after the race resumed but Lando Norris has made the most of his fresher hard tyres to overtake Oscar Piastri and take second place.
Norris got close on a straight and used DRS to overtake Piastri, with the two McLarens going wheel to wheel for the first time this season in a moment that would have had the team pit wall nervous.

Max Verstappen is in the box seat to win the race with a one-stop strategy. Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar was holding up a train in fourth, which should allow Verstappen to come out of his pit stop in clean air.
Piastri eventually passed Hadjar, now it remains to be seen if the Aussie can do the whole race with one pit stop. Everything was coming up Max Verstappen in Imola. (Photo by)

It's looking like a two pit stop strategy is the way to go in this 63-lap race.
The medium tyre isn't looking particulary quick , with Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri coming in to pit for hard tyres.
It was a slow 3.6 second pit stop for Piastri, which won't help his cause. He comes out in 11th and will hope his new tyres work some magic and he can undercut Verstappen.

‘Never seen that': America reacts to unusual changeroom scene at Club World Cup

If you can't handle the heat, head to the sheds. Borussia Dortmund defeated South African team Mamelodi Sundowns 4-3 in their FIFA Club World Cup match on Sunday (AEST) to move into second spot in Group F. Watch every game of The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup LIVE on Kayo Sports | New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited time offer. The expanded Club World Cup is being held in America and the summer heat at Cincinnati's TQL Stadium proved too hot to handle for some of the players. Substitute players from German side Dortmund retreated to their changerooms during the change to escape the heat, watching the game on a TV screen. Temperatures reached 30.5 degrees celsius (87 degrees fahrenheit) in Cincinnati during the game, but the sight of Dortmund's bench players seeking refuge from the heat took some fans by surprise. American sports commentator Joe Pompliano said: 'I've never seen that before.' Borussia Dortmund's bench is watching their Club World Cup match from the locker room because of the heat. It is currently 87 degrees (30.5 degrees Celsius) in Cincinnati, Ohio where the match is being played. (via @BVB) — ESPN FC (@ESPNFC) June 21, 2025 One person commented: 'This is normal weather. Euro countries can't handle this is too funny.' A second said: 'Humidity over 50 per cent as well. Feels like 96 degrees according weather app.' A third said: 'Lol, just came back from my men's league game, it's 100 (degrees) right now.' Another said: '30.5 degrees and they are acting this way. They shouldn't come to Africa.' Players were doing their best to stay hydrated during the game and applied ice packs to their necks in an effort to stay cool. Next year's FIFA World Cup will be held in the USA, Canada and Mexico in July to July. For the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the stadiums used an airconditioning system to maintain comfortable temperatures for players and fans despite the desert heat. As for the game itself, Dortmund held off Mamelodi Sundowns to win a seven-goal thriller. Jobe Bellingham got his first goal for Dortmund as his new club overcame stifling heat in Cincinnati to beat Sundowns 4-3 and move to four points from two matches in Group F. The South African champions had taken a surprise early lead through a fine solo goal from Lucas Ribeiro. However, Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams handed Dortmund their equaliser on a plate, passing the ball straight to Felix Nmecha, who stroked home. Serhou Guirassy gave Dortmund the lead with his 35th goal since the beginning of the season. English midfielder Bellingham, who this month followed older brother Jude's footsteps in joining the German side from Sunderland, started for the first time for Dortmund and made it 3-1 just before the break. Khuliso Mudau's own goal made it 4-1 before the hour mark, but Sundowns salvaged some pride by reducing the deficit through Iqraam Rayners and Lebo Mothiba. 'I'm sweating like I've just come out of a sauna,' said Dortmund coach Niko Kovac when asked about the conditions in a game which started at midday local time. 'It was tough going for both teams, but the opposition are used to it. We certainly didn't give our best performance, but that wasn't possible today.' Sundowns will still go into their final game in Group F with a chance of qualifying for the last 16. 'The boys made a wonderful performance … it was a hell of a match. I'm not happy but very proud,' said their Portuguese coach, Miguel Cardoso. Mbappe release from hospital Meanwhile, Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe was released from hospital after undergoing tests and treatment after suffering gastroenteritis, before later being released. Mbappe did not travel to Charlotte for the team's Club World Cup match against Pachuca, but could be back for the final group stage game, coach Xabi Alonso said. 'He's doing better, he's back from the hospital and is recovering. We're optimistic about having him against Salzburg,' Alonso said. Madrid face Salzburg in the final game of Group H on Thursday in Philadelphia. Mbappe, 26, missed the opening game with the same illness as Madrid were held 1-1 by Al-Hilal in Xabi Alonso's debut as coach. Madrid B-team player Gonzalo Garcia, 21, started in Mbappe's stead and opened the scoring for Real Madrid against their Saudi Arabian opponents.

He defended his belt once during his time on top, against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 in November last year, and had repeatedly played down talk about an impending fight against Aspinall. The potential matchup would have been one of the biggest in UFC history, but Jones continually suggested it would not change his legacy. Fans accused him of ducking the 32-year-old Englishman, and there was so much outrage that an online petition to strip Jones of the title collated more than 200,000 signatures. X SUBSCRIBER ONLY 'I obviously feel bad for Tom that he lost all that time and money, but we'll make it up to him,' White said. 'Tom Aspinall is a good guy. He's been incredible through this whole process that we've gone through. 'He's been willing to do anything — fight him anywhere and anytime and do this, and now he's like, 'I'll fight anybody. You tell me who, and I'll fight him'. 'So Aspinall has been great. He's going to be a great heavyweight champion for us, and I'm excited to work with him.' White's words came as Khalil Rountree Jr. dominated former champion Jamahal Hill in a five-round decision in their light heavyweight bout in the main event of UFC Fight Night in Baku, Azerbaijan. Jones became the youngest ever UFC champion at just 21 years of age, and he went undefeated in championship fights with a 16-0 record despite taking on more of them than anyone else. He is one of only fighters to boast titles in multiple weight classes, and his 22 wins are the equal fifth most in UFC history. Jones also attracted plenty of attention outside of the Octagon. He was arrested and charged for a hit-and-run in 2015 after he fled the scene of a vehicle accident which injured a 25-year-old pregnant woman. The following year, Jones was banned from competition for one year as a result a positive drug test, but he has long maintained that the positive result was due to contaminated legal supplements.
