Hajiji: Federal-state unity key to Sabah's progress

PENAMPANG: Sabah's development agenda will advance more effectively with strong support and close cooperation between the Federal and state governments, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
He expressed confidence that a solid relationship between the two parties would be a catalyst for the successful implementation of the state's development policies.
'This cooperation is vital to ensure the people of Sabah benefit directly,' he said at the 2025 Kaamatan Festival celebration held at the Hongkod Koisaan Hall, Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA), here today.
The event was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, and attended by Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam and KDCA president Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan.
Hajiji also expressed his appreciation to Anwar for officiating the event, describing his presence as a clear sign of the Federal government's commitment to Sabah.
He noted that this year's Kaamatan Festival, themed 'Kaamatan Untuk Semua, Kaamatan For All, Kaamatan Montok Toinsanan', marks the 65th official celebration since its formal introduction in 1960.
'Kaamatan is not merely a cultural celebration, but a symbol of unity and harmony among the people of Sabah, values that must be preserved. It does not belong to any one ethnic group, but to all Sabahans. It reflects the spirit of goodwill and cohesion that underpins the state's stability,' he said.
Hajiji further affirmed the state government's continued commitment to strengthening rural socio-economic development through a range of strategic approaches, such as agricultural modernisation, support for small and medium enterprises, and the promotion of community-based tourism.
'These efforts form a critical pillar of our mission to enhance the well-being of the people holistically and inclusively, in line with the Sabah Maju Jaya development plan,' he added.
He emphasised the importance of expanding economic opportunities for rural communities, through modern agriculture, community-based tourism and skills training to help increase household income and reduce the poverty rate.
He highlighted that the reactivation of the Sabah Padi and Rice Board is aimed at enhancing food security through increased local rice self-sufficiency.
'Our target is to achieve 30 percent rice self-sufficiency by next year and 60 percent by 2030. This is a vital step towards reducing import dependency and strengthening local food supply resilience,' he said.

Additionally, I urge a review of how DBKK issued the occupancy certificate for the Vistana Heights project based on allegedly falsified as-built survey and development plans. The article's emphasis on due process and the courts delivering justice is commendable. However, I wonder if ordinary citizens should have to resort to legal action to address such issues, potentially tarnishing the government's reputation due to the actions of a few. The state's cooperation with enforcement agencies and its focus on accountability are promising steps. As the article notes, 'The strength of GRS lies not in avoiding challenges but in responding to them with principle, clarity, and purpose.' I couldn't agree more and hope this signals a new era of transparency and responsiveness in Sabah's governance. KOTA KINABALU (June 23): Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor, who is also the president of Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat), chaired the party's Supreme Council meeting at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) on Monday. The meeting, which began at 3pm, discussed various matters including the party's preparedness for the upcoming Sabah State Election and efforts to strengthen organisational operations at all levels. Also present were Gagasan Rakyat deputy president Datuk Seri Panglima Masidi Manjun, vice presidents Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif, Datuk Rubin Balang and Datuk Masiung Banah, secretary-general Datuk Mohd Razali Razi, treasurer Datuk Sri Ghulamhaidar Khan Bahadar, information chief Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, as well as leaders of the party's wings and other senior party officials. KL Youth Force, Trainee Allowance Among Proposals At Federal Territories Youth Assembly

PUTRAJAYA, June 23 (Bernama) -- The establishment of the Kuala Lumpur (KL) Youth Force, a minimum allowance for industrial trainees, and stricter enforcement on the placement of foreign nationals were among key proposals raised during the inaugural Federal Territories Youth Assembly (Sidang Belia Wilayah Persekutuan – SBWP), which concluded today. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the KL Youth Force aims to support disaster victims in the Federal Territories, particularly in welfare-related crises such as floods and fires. 'Although similar structures already exist, such as Rakan NADMA (National Disaster Management Agency volunteers), the KL Youth Force needs further study. If it involves welfare matters, it must follow proper standard operating procedures (SOPs),' she said. On the proposal for trainee allowances, Dr Zaliha noted that while the government sector already provides such support, the call was to expand this to the private sector. 'Some private companies do provide allowances, but there's no clear policy. I intend to discuss this with Human Resources Minister Steven Sim for further consideration,' she added. She was speaking at a press conference after winding-up session of the three-day assembly, which began on June 21. A total of 15 resolutions were presented, covering areas such as the economy, social development, technology, and legislation. Asked whether the proposals would be brought to higher levels, including Cabinet discussions or the 2026 Budget planning, Dr Zaliha said all approved resolutions would be submitted to the Federal Territories Department (JWP) for follow-up. 'For matters beyond my portfolio under the Ministerial Functions Act 1969 (Amendment 2023), I will refer them to the Cabinet for consideration by the relevant ministers.
