Teacher knocked unconscious in Dundee school when raging pupil threw her 'like a ragdoll'
A Dundee school teacher was knocked unconscious and left covered in blood after being thrown 'like a ragdoll' by an angry pupil.
After carrying out the vicious attack, Keiran Matthew put his feet up on a teacher's desk and said: 'The stupid cow deserved it.'
Dundee Sheriff Court heard how the female teacher at St Paul's Academy in Kirkton was lucky not to have sustained life-threatening injuries at the 18-year-old's hands.
Matthew, who has diagnosed attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and a learning difficulty, pled guilty to attacking the woman in a corridor on March 22 2024.
The horrific assault unfolded after the then-S5 pupil refused to get changed separately from other pupils before PE.
This measure – agreed by Matthew, his foster mum and the school – was put in place because of previous aggression towards other children.
Fiscal depute Laura Bruce said Matthew was described as a 'couple of years behind' in his development and was educated outside mainstream classes.
On the afternoon in question, Matthew – around 6ft in height – was said to have been 'agitated' and 'heightened' over the pre-PE changing.
The teacher who would be attacked was deemed to be a 'safe' person for him and had previously succeeded in de-escalating volatile incidents.
She took the decision to have two other teachers and pupils placed in a locked classroom away from Matthew, who sat with his head down at a table.
Mrs Bruce said: 'The accused then realised they had gone to the ICT class and moved towards the door and said 'I'm f*****g going in there too'.
'He tried to exit to the corridor where (the teacher) had her back to him.
'She recalls him gripping her in a rugby-style grip with her arms pinned to her sides and the next thing she felt was the horrific impact of her head striking the floor.'
The court heard the teacher blacked out momentarily but regained consciousness and made a bloody handprint on the wall as she tried to get to her feet.
Staff came to her aid after she screamed for help while bleeding profusely.
'She was blinded by her own blood, which covered her face and top with a large amount of blood seen on the floor,' Mrs Bruce said.
'Another teacher had witnessed the accused lift her completely off her feet, throwing her to the floor deliberately and landing headfirst.
'Another said she appeared to be like a ragdoll flying through the air.
'The accused sat at a teacher's desk, with his feet on the desk and using his mobile phone.
'He told a teacher 'Sir, it wasn't an outburst of anger – she deserved it'.'
During a phone call to tell someone he hit a teacher, Matthew again said 'she deserved it'.
He later banged on the desk and said: 'The stupid cow deserved it.'
A colleague took the injured teacher to Ninewells Hospital because of an expected 20-minute wait for an ambulance.
She was given 10 stitches and had to return for a CT scan because she was confused and unable to finish sentences.
The woman was diagnosed with concussion and plastic surgeon Dr Ketki Kaushal said the assault could have been life-threatening.
It was revealed she sustained a Y-shaped wound to her forehead, which would leave an 'obvious and permanent' scar for life.
After being cautioned and charged, Matthew, of Dundee, replied: 'I am sorry.'
He pled guilty to seizing the teacher's neck and body, throwing her to the floor, causing her to strike her head and be rendered unconscious.
He admitted the assault was to her severe injury, permanent disfigurement and the danger of her life. He will be sentenced at a later date.

'Scotland's dumbest criminal' set fire to himself while torching cars for gang
Sheriff Tim Niven-Smith also imposed an eight-month supervised release period to protect the public from serious harm once Gibb is freed from jail. A bungling gangland enforcer has been called "Scotland's dumbest criminal" by a sheriff after he set fire to himself while torching cars. Hapless hood Darren Gibb, 33 was jailed for two years after a court was shown footage of him fleeing from the scene with his hand on fire. Dundee Sheriff Court heard Gibb was acting on the orders of gangland figures to set fire to three vehicles across the city in targeted attacks. Sheriff Tim Niven-Smith also imposed an eight-month supervised release period to protect the public from serious harm once Gibb is freed from jail. The sheriff said: "He set fire to himself clearly in one of the videos. He's running with one of his hands on fire because the accelerant has gone on himself - Scotland's dumbest criminal. "You pled guilty to three charges of wilful fireraising on three dates. You intended to cause financial harm and inconvenience to the owners of the vehicles. "These acts were pre-meditated. You said you had been asked to set fire to the cars on behalf of another criminal or criminals. You attended in dark clothing and used accelerant and the crimes were pre-planned. Your blameworthiness is high and your case involves multiple victims. "There was the potentiality of serious harm or even death by your actions. Your crimes were committed solely for your financial gain. You were acting as enforcer for a drug dealer. "You were indebted to those who asked you to commit these crimes and you gained financially by having debts written off. You are not of good character generally. "In committing one of the offences you managed to set fire to yourself and were lucky not to sustain a more substantial burn injury." The court heard Gibb caused £44,300 worth of damage to a Volkswagen Golf, a Toyota Aygo, an Audi A6 and a Mercedes-Benz. Dramatic video footage played to the court showed the ferocious flames that engulfed the cars, which were started with accelerant. Residents in the Charleston Drive area overheard a loud bang in the early hours of September 19 last year. Prosecutor Stephanie Paterson said: "One of the witnesses looked out the living room window and could see the silver Volkswagen Golf to be on fire. "Two to three males in black were seen to run away. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service attended to extinguished the blaze and deemed it to be wilful." Plastic on the back of the nearby Toyota Aygo was damaged as a result of the fire with scene examiners later discovering the melted remains of a jerry can within a black rucksack. Gormless Gibb also left the key fob to his partner's home at the scene of the crime. On October 24, he struck again after hiring a taxi to an address in Kirkton shortly after 4am. Ms Paterson said: "At around 5.15am, the witness was woken by a loud bang at the front door and observed the silver Audi in the driveway on fire with flames emanating from the wheel arches. "The words 'let's go Megan' were spray painted on the ground. The court was told that this was a message relating to the daughter of a neighbour. The court heard how Gibb was caught on Ring doorbell footage two days later setting fire to an Audi on the same street. He again used accelerant on the bonnet of the car, before running away in the direction of Old Glamis Road. The desperate owner used a hose to try to put out the flames before fire crews and police descended on the scene. Police arrested Gibb a short distance away and the firebug, who had burn marks on his hand, replied: "I've not done nothing at all." Gibb's clothing smelled of petrol with the court hearing how part of his jacket had been melted. Officers later searched his partner's flat, where nozzles for jerry cans were discovered in a vacuum pack. Gibb, from Dundee, pled guilty to three charges of wilful fireraising on two separate streets in Dundee. Solicitor Mike Short said Gibb "chose to follow instructions" from more serious and organised criminals after mounting up drug debts.

Creepy paedo dad who groomed Scots schoolgirl moved 400 miles to be closer to her
James Gillies, made contact with the Kirriemuir-based child through Instagram after breaking up with his long-term partner in Gwynedd, Wales. A cunning paedophile groomed a 14-year-old girl before moving 400 miles to live in the same Scottish town as her and target her for sexual abuse. James Gillies, made contact with the Kirriemuir-based child through Instagram after breaking up with his long-term partner in Gwynedd, Wales. He has been locked up after he admitted spending months grooming the child before sexually assaulting her on a bus when they were the only passengers. Fiscal depute Andrew Brown told Dundee Sheriff Court that Gillies was vaguely known to the girl and she showed his initial contact message to a member of her family. "He asked what she was up to," Mr Brown said. "She was advised not to reply, but she ignored that advice and replied. The conversation then moved on to Snapchat. "The accused sent naked images of himself, of his penis, and dressed only in boxers. They looked like they were taken in a bathroom or shower. "He stated he was moving to Kirriemuir and had ended a 13-year relationship as there was no sexual chemistry with his partner and he didn't like living in Wales. "He asked her to be his girlfriend and asked her to marry him. Her mother found out and was not happy about this and they fell out," the fiscal depute said. "In February 2024 the accused moved to Kirriemuir. They began meeting regularly at the bandstand in the public park. This was between 8 and 9 at night or during school hours. "She would skip school or they would meet at the lunch break. He would kiss her lips and neck. He would unzip her gilet and put his hands up her top, kissing and sucking her breasts. She stated she was not ready for this." Mr Brown said they were on a bus together when Gillies digitally penetrated her vagina, which she later said had left her "freaked out." The girl was upset by what Gillies had done and she told a friend who reported it to her mother. Social workers also received a report about her being seen holding hands with an older man. Gillies told police he enjoyed the attention and said: "I admit to it. Sometimes I encouraged her and if someone did the same to my daughters they would be a dirty man. "I should never have done it because of her age. I'm 42 and she's 14." Mr Brown said: "He stated he wished it had never happened, but said there was no point lying about it." Gillies admitted that between 1 October 2023 and 1 February 2024 he coerced the girl into looking at sexual images by sending her pictures of his naked body and penis. He also admitted that on two occasions in February last year he engaged in sexual activity with the schoolgirl and he was remanded in custody for background reports. Sheriff Tim Niven-Smith deferred sentence for reports and said: "The court is faced with a man, who, at the age of 42 engaged a 14-year-old girl in communication and travelled from Wales to Scotland. "He formed a relationship with a girl he knew to be under the age of consent. Custody is inevitable," he said, as he described Gillies' behaviour as "sinister."

CCTV released after assault in Scots nightclub
Police are investigating an assault in a Scots nightclub and have released CCTV to assist with their investigation. CCTV images of a man have been released following an assault in a Scots nightclub. The incident took place last year on Saturday, July 27, 2024, between 1am and 3am at Life Nightclub in Dunfermline. Police Scotland have now released images of a man they believe may be able to assist officers with an ongoing investigation into an assault. The black male is described as speaking with an African/English accent and being between 30 and 40 years of age, around 5ft 8in tall and of slim build. At the time, he was wearing dark grey jeans, black Vans style shoes, a red t-shirt, black jacket and a black/grey cap. Those with information can contact Dunfermline CIU via 101 and quote incident number 4198 of July 30 2024. Alternatively, an anonymous report can be made via the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Last week we reported, in a separate incident, that a savage carer who bit a lump out of a pal's face and spat on a police officer has been banned from the profession. Danielle Gaffar, from Dundee, tried to hide the fact she'd been jailed for a brutal nightclub attack when she applied to work in social care last year. The 24-year-old then went on to attack a police officer after a drunken house party, kicking them on the head and spitting on them. A social care watchdog struck the home carer off the register. A report from the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) told Gaffar: 'You have been convicted of two violent criminal offences in the space of five years. This demonstrates a disregard for the law, lack of self-control and propensity to violence. 'Your actions resulted in physical, and likely emotional, harm to the victims.' Kyra Strachan was going out with Gaffer's ex when she was assaulted to her severe injury and permanent disfigurement in February 2019 by her former friend. Dundee Sheriff Court heard that Gaffar and Miss Strachan, who were both 18 and at school at the time, were formerly close friends but there had been a 'disagreement' between them and there remained some animosity. Strachan had been on the dance floor of the Aura nightclub when she was attacked from behind, pulled to the ground, and her head was banged off the floor several times. Gaffar put her arm around her victim's throat until she struggled to breathe and bit her right cheek, leaving her needing eight stitches and permanently scarred. Gaffar was jailed for 16 months after a sheriff rejected defence pleas not to jail her, labelling her actions outrageous and 'reprehensible' and saying there had been 'absolute outrage in the community' as a result. In January last year, Gaffer failed to disclose the conviction when registering to be a support workers in home care. Just six months later she was convicted at Dundee Sheriff Court for a second time. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
