Earth's core is leaking gold and other precious metals, may change the planet's composition

Mint03-06-2025

Gold and other precious metals are slowly leaking from Earth's core into upper layers. A new study suggests that they are reaching the surface during volcanic island formation like Hawaii.
Researchers have studied Hawaiian rocks formed by rising magma plumes and found signs of heavy metals. This supports the idea that Earth's core may not be fully sealed off. It could be seeping into the rocky mantle.
Experts already believed that almost all of Earth's gold lies deep in its molten core. It was created around 4.5 billion years ago during early planetary formation. However, this research shows that small amounts may be reaching the surface.
The findings excite scientists because, over time, more gold and rare elements could continue moving up from Earth's deep interior. This discovery gives hope that new sources of gold might slowly form near volcanic zones in the future.
Earth's core has two layers: a solid inner core made of iron and nickel and a liquid outer core of molten metal. The solid core is about 70% the size of the moon. The outer core extends 1,800 miles below the surface.
'About 40 years ago, people first came up with the theory that maybe the core is losing some material into the mantle, but the signals we got so far were really ambiguous,' CNN quoted geochemist Nils Messling as saying.
'Now, in my opinion, we have the first very strong evidence that some of the core is actually ending up in the mantle,' Messling added.
Messling and his team have studied volcanic rocks from Hawaii to understand how Earth's core and mantle interact. They crushed half a kilo of basalt rock into powder, melted it with chemicals and turned it into a liquid.
From this, they extracted rare elements from the platinum group, focusing on ruthenium. This silver-grey metal, as rare as gold, is mostly found in Earth's core, not in the mantle.
Messling suggests that tiny amounts of gold may slowly leak from Earth's core. This process may explain how Earth's gold supply keeps getting renewed.
'It's a very interesting idea that, although this process is tiny and has zero effect if you look at just one island, if you scale it up to 4.5 billion years it could be that it changes the composition of the Earth,' he said.

Why Mosquitoes Are Being Dropped Using Drones In Hawaii? Scientists Explain

Scientists are dropping swarms of mosquitoes using a giant drone in the remote forests of Hawaii. Though the experiment may seem straight out of a horror sci-fi movie, the scientists are dropping these hated insects to resurrect life in Hawaii. The beautiful tropical island is facing an extinction crisis. Colourful songbirds known as honeycreepers that were once abundant in Hawaii are struggling to survive because of avian malaria, transmitted by invasive mosquitoes. To help these birds rebound, scientists have now come up with a plan. The drones are being used to drop lab-reared, non-biting male mosquitoes that have been engineered to carry a bacteria strain that interferes with reproduction. By continuously releasing these special males into honeycreeper habitats where malaria is spreading, scientists are hoping to erode the population of biting mosquitoes and thus suppress the spread of disease. The project is being spearheaded by "Birds, Not Mosquitoes", a coalition of nonprofit organisations working to protect native Hawaiian birds. Since the mosquito project started in November 2023, they have released over 40 million males in honeycreeper habitats in Maui and Kauai. "What this does is it erects an invisible barrier so that these mosquitoes can't get up to the forests where these birds remain," Chris Farmer, Hawaii program director at American Bird Conservancy, a conservation group that's leading the drone effort, told Vox. 'Without significantly reducing invasive mosquito populations, multiple native bird species will disappear forever in the near future. At least 33 species of honeycreeper are now extinct, and many of the 17 that remain, including the Kiwikiu and ʻĀkohekohe on Maui, and ʻAkekeʻe on Kauaʻi, are highly endangered," he added. Though it is unclear at this stage if unleashing the reproductively challenged mosquitoes was yielding any result, scientists remain hopeful that they might be able to save the honeycreepers population. Notably, mosquitoes are not native to Hawaii. But after a whaling ship accidentally brought them to the islands in 1826, they proliferated and thrived in the warm, humid climate.

Scientists Recreate Face Of 10,500-Year-Old Woman Using DNA

Researchers at Ghent University have reconstructed the visage of a pale, dark-haired, blue-eyed prehistoric woman who lived 10,500 years ago in what is now Belgium. They produced an amazing image, depicting the face of a woman who lived and died in the Meuse River valley, using ancient DNA. In 1988, the remains of the Mesolithic woman were found in the Margaux cave, which is close to Dinant. She was a hunter-gatherer from Western Europe, the same group as the popular Cheddar Man from Great Britain. DNA studies showed the Margaux woman's eyes were blue, just like Cheddar Man's. She did, however, have a somewhat lighter complexion than the majority of other Mesolithic individuals in Western Europe examined so far. It is a minor but crucial detail, according to the project's lead geneticist, Dr. Maite Rivollat. The reconstruction of her face and living conditions was made possible by a mix of anatomical, genetic, and archaeological data. Ghent University archaeologist Isabelle De Groote told CNN that the 'Meuse Woman' was from the same ethnicity as the Cheddar Man, who lived in what is now the United Kingdom at the time, but had a lighter complexion. "We could also infer from the skull that she was between 35 and 60 years old," De Groote told CNN. The prehistoric Belgian woman also resembled Cheddar Man with a prominent nasal bridge. "She also has noticeable brow ridges, even though she's a woman," De Groote added. University archaeologist Philippe Crombe said that "quite good quality" DNA was extracted from the woman's skull so that "a very detailed reconstruction" could be made. While some of her features, like her jewellery and tattoos, are based on archaeological data gathered from previous digs in the River Meuse basin, helping researchers create a picture of the woman's daily life — her complexion, hair, and eyes are all based on ancient DNA. The creative team also used archaeological evidence, such as tools, shells, paints, and camp remnants. This made her world come to life, along with her face. Every detail was meticulously recreated, from hunting methods to transportation, from plants to animals. The remains of the 'Meuse Woman' were discovered in the Margaux cave in Dinant in 1988-1989, along with the remains of eight other women. This was "an unusual finding" because the majority of Mesolithic burial sites include a mix of men, women, and children. The reconstruction was carried out in cooperation with Dutch artists Kennis and Kennis and researchers from the ROAM project (a Regional Outlook on Ancient Migration), an interdisciplinary effort comprising archaeologists, bioanthropologists, geneticists, and artists.
