Panama Canal boss says MSC ports deal threatens neutrality, FT reports

Reuters10-06-2025

June 10 (Reuters) - The sale of two ports near the Panama Canal to a global consortium led by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) threatens the canal's principle of neutrality, the canal's head Ricaurte Vasquez told the Financial Times.
"There is a potential risk of capacity concentration if the deal comes the way it is structured as we understand right now,' Vasquez told the FT in a report published on Tuesday.
"If there is a significant level of concentration on terminal operators belonging to an integrated or one single shipping company, it will be at the expense of Panama's competitiveness in the market and inconsistent with neutrality."
MSC is one of the world's top container shipping groups. MSC and the Panama Canal Authority did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
CK Hutchison (0001.HK), opens new tab confirmed last month that MSC, run by the family of Italian billionaire Gianluigi Aponte, was the main investor in a group seeking to buy 43 ports, including the two ports in Panama, for $22.8 billion.
The clarification follows weeks of scrutiny and criticism in China over CK Hutchison's plan to sell the ports to a consortium, which was previously led by U.S. investment firm BlackRock (BLK.N), opens new tab. BlackRock remains part of the group.
The proposed sale has also drawn the attention of U.S. President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly expressed his desire to reduce Chinese influence around the Panama Canal and termed the deal a "reclaiming" of the waterway after it was first announced.
In April, China's top market regulator said it was paying close attention to CK Hutchison's planned sale and that parties to the deal should not try to avoid an antitrust review.
Vasquez added that the canal should use the ports deal as an opportunity to become a terminal operator itself by reactivating a project to build a terminal in the Port of Corozal at the Pacific end of the canal, according to the FT.

Bank of Mexico seen cutting key rate by 50 basis points next week

June 20 (Reuters) - Mexico's central bank is expected to cut its key interest rate by half a percentage point again in its announcement next week, although it would moderate the pace of monetary tightening going forward amid rising inflation and weak economic growth. According to a Reuters poll released on Friday, 21 of 26 economists expect the central bank to cut borrowing costs to 8%, from its current 8.5%, in what would be its fourth consecutive 50 basis point cut. Three participants expect Banxico, as the central bank is known, to take a more gradual approach by reducing interest rates by just 25 basis points, while the remaining two believe it will keep rates unchanged, following the U.S. Federal Reserve's decision this week to hold its benchmark interest rate steady. Banxico has said it is considering lowering the interbank rate again by 50 basis points in its June 26 announcement, extending a monetary readjustment cycle that began in 2024 after it raised its key interest rate to a record high of 11.25% as part of its efforts to tame inflation following the pandemic. But in May, the consumer price index exceeded the bank's official target of 3% interest rate plus or minus one percentage point, raising some doubts about whether the bank will follow through with such a significant rate reduction. Deputy Governor Jonathan Heath told Reuters last week that he believes 50 basis point cuts should be paused until the data can be evaluated further. A further 50 basis point cut would take Banxico's rate to its lowest level in three years, which could provide some relief to the weakening Mexican economy. But the majority of participants polled by Reuters said they believed the central bank should be more cautious in its next moves. Latin America's second-largest economy narrowly avoided a technical recession in the first quarter of the year, but still faces serious risks amid sluggish domestic activity and uncertainty related to U.S. tariff policies. Following next week's decision, Banxico could opt for a 25 basis point cut in its next announcement in August, according to 15 participants, possibly followed by a similar cut in September. A majority of the participants said they believed the third quarter could end with an interest rate at 7.5%.

Fox expands sports broadcast rights with Caliente TV acquisition in Mexico

June 19 (Reuters) - Fox Corp (FOXA.O), opens new tab has acquired sports-focused streaming platform and television channel Caliente TV to expand its sports broadcasting presence in Mexico, the company said on Thursday. The move allows Fox to tap into the growing appetite for premium sports content by acquiring broadcast rights to the UEFA Champions League, France's Ligue 1, and select Liga MX matches through Caliente TV. With this acquisition, the company said it would develop a multi-platform business, including the launch of a new pay TV channel and a subscription video‑on‑demand service to complement its free, ad-supported Tubi platform. Fox said Carlos Martinez, its executive vice president and managing director for Latin America, will oversee the rollout of new sports channels and streaming platforms in Mexico and Central America, which are expected to employ more than 350 people. Martinez has over three decades of broadcast industry experience in Latin America, holding executive roles at companies such as Turner, Discovery and Fox, the company said. The company declined to provide financial details when contacted by Reuters. Last month, the Murdoch family-controlled company said its new subscription-based streaming service Fox One will launch before the fall American football season, as it seeks to reach audiences beyond its mainstay cable television business. In the March quarter, more advertisers turned to the owner of Fox News, Fox Sports and Tubi to tap its growing viewership. The company beat third-quarter revenue estimates last month.
