Soundgarden's Long-Awaited Final Album Might See The Light Of Day Soon

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil spoke about his desire to release the band's long-awaited final album. This album is said to feature Soundgarden's final recordings and compositions with singer Chris Cornell, which of course, were recorded and written prior to Cornell's death in 2017.
Following Chris Conrell's death, the remaining members of Soundgarden Kim Thayil (guitarist), Matt Cameron (drums), and Ben Shepard (bass) have been in a dispute between Cornell's widow, Vicky Corenell, over the final songs the band and Chris had been working on. In 2021, Vicky Corenell had sued the members of Soundgarden over a proposed buyout offer for the band's final recordings. However, just as tension were heating up between the two parties, in April 2023, the band and Cornell's estate announced they had come to an agreement:
'Soundgarden and Vicky Cornell, on behalf of the Estate of Chris Cornell, are happy to announce they have reached an amicable out of court resolution. The reconciliation marks a new partnership between the two parties, which will allow Soundgarden fans around the world to hear the final songs that the band and Chris were working on. The two parties are united and coming together to propel, honor and build upon Soundgarden's incredible legacy as well as Chris's indelible mark on music history – as one of the greatest songwriters and vocalists of all time"
Despite this public statement which clearly points out that both parties had reconciled, Soundgarden's drummer Matt Cameron had made comments in the following months, that indicate the dispute between the band and Cornell's estate was still ongoing. On the Vinyl Guide podcast, Cameron was asked about the status of the band's unreleased material, to which he replied, 'We're still in the middle of a dispute with the estate and… Everything is on hold right now, and I can't really go into details unfortunately. But as of right now, no, it doesn't look like it's gonna happen next year, [2024]. But hopefully soon – I'm not giving up hope.'
While the waters have been murky regarding the status of this final Soundgarden LP, guitarist Kim Thayil recently spoke with Rolling Stone ahead of Soundgarden's induction into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame happening later this year. When asked on whether or not the final recordings will be released, Thayil replied, 'I think so. Our objective and goal was always to complete that. I probably have OCD enough to not want to leave something unfinished or incomplete like that, so I think the more we can attend to our body of work and our catalog…I think everyone in the band feels that way."
Thayil continued, "I don't just to attend to my work, but the collective work, and in this case specifically, the work of Chris. I have pride for what I did and I want to see that come out. It doesn't exist in the vacuum. It exists as a collaboration with Matt and Ben and Chris, but it takes on an entirely different weight when you think about what it is you're honoring, and the work that you're paying tribute to. It is us collectively. We want to do it proud. And that part of us is certainly one of the most intimate components of what Soundgarden has been since 1984." Bottom Line
Thayil's comments make it clear that the band ultimately plans to release this material, however, the timeline for this release is still unknown. With Soundgarden's induction into the RARHOF, the remaining members will be performing alongside one another once again, and of course, both parties will likely be present for the ceremony. Given that Soundgarden's legacy is in the spotlight with their upcoming induction, there could be an opportunity for the band and Cornell's estate to finalize a release plan for this long-awaited LP.

Heatwave alert! How to survive Glastonbury in the sun
It's the stuff of dreams: the weather forecast is good. Next week's weather shows a never-ending flow of sunny-skied days stretching ahead – good news for anybody, but especially good news for people looking to attend Glastonbury Festival next year. Or is it? As veteran festivalgoers will know, hot temperatures can be just as deadly for people wanting to have a good time as a thunderstorm. While rain turns festivals into swamps, sun turns them into a sweltering desert. With the mercury tipped to remain in the high twenties next week, here's what to know about surviving Glasto – and indeed any outdoor festival – in the full glare of the summer sun. It's top of the list for a reason: not enough people do it. Applying Factor 50 throughout the day is a must if you want to avoid getting extremely burned on day one. If you want something light and hydrating, a brand like Dussl is a good shout – their suncreams work both as protection and as a moisturiser. Otherwise, opt for the tried and tested Nivea. Battery powered fans – many sniff at them, but there's a lot to be said for having them on hand. Light, easy to pack and pretty much indestructible, they're an invaluable way of cooling down during a long, hot day in a field with much shade. Best of all, they're cheap to get – Amazon offer plenty for as little as a tenner. Sounds counterintuitive, but one of the best ways to protect yourself during the hotter hours is to layer up. That means lots of light, cool layers: linen, cotton and as few synthetic fabrics as possible. Shirts – which can be buttoned up or left loose – are a must, as are roomy skirts and shorts. Ideally, you'll be aiming to maximise airflow around your body while protecting your skin. Damson Madder is a good place to shop for loose, flowing items: their Chlo shirt is both patterned and comfy, as is their polka-dotted Layla skirt, which has the added bonus of coming down to knee length. And while you're at it, wear a hat! Sunhats are an essential way to protect oneself from sunstroke, and good news: they sure are having a moment. How about investing in one of Self Esteem's 6Music Dad caps? They were seen everywhere last year. There's nothing worse than waking up at 7.30am to a roasting hot tent – that goes doubly on hot summer days. But there are ways to mitigate this. While Glastonbury doesn't allow awnings, it's a good idea to shop for a tent that has side flaps or air vents that can be opened to allow better circulation and cooling. Good examples of this include the Sea to Summit Telos Freestanding tent (ultralight, while the outside of the tent can be converted into a sunshade) and the pop-up Gazelle T4, which includes six large windows for maximum ventilation. It sounds obvious, but again – it's easy to forget to drink water when you're six pints deep. Solve this issue by investing in a reusable water bottle: Chilly's is a classic, and comes in a range of fun designs. Glastonbury especially is good at having multiple hydration stations around the campsite, and they normally include reusable, lightweight aluminium water bottles in welcome packs for festivalgoers – so there's no reason not to use them. Nothing makes you feel worse than eating a heavy, greasy meal then trying to go for a dance in the sunshine. To that end – try and avoid them if possible. Glastonbury is bursting at the seams with great places to go eat, so try and aim for places that sell fruit (watermelon is great at keeping you hydrated) and eat smaller portions to give your body less work. Down with hiking boots! They'll make your feet feel sweaty, disgusting and be a nightmare to peel off in the evenings. Opt for lightweight options instead: ultra-comfortable sandals like Birkenstocks are always a good shout, for instance, especially as they let your feet breathe. So are hard-wearing, comfy trainers. For the fashionable, Puma are always a good bet: their Speedcats have Ortholite soles, while the Speedcat Ballets are a nice mix of fashionable and comfy.

Squid Game star praises 'unpredictable' ending as creator reveals fears
Squid Game is coming to an end with its hotly-anticipated third season, which Lee Jung-jae has described as having the 'most unpredictable, most meaningful and the most intriguing ending possible' — but the show's creator Hwang Dong-hyuk is still in two minds about it. Speaking at a press conference in London for the Netflix juggernaut, the showrunner admitted he had a hard time coming up with a satisfying conclusion to the story. Season 3 returns to Gi-hun (Lee) as a broken man after his rebellion against the leaders of the deadly games failed and led to his friend's death. As the players that are left decide to keep playing, Gi-hun is forced to question his mission and also his faith in humanity. There are a lot of twists and turns in store for viewers in the final episodes, and when asked about the hardest decision he had to make director Hwang shared: "Even when I was writing the season 3 I had to make a big decision because this is the finale of the whole series, the whole show. "So that decision was so difficult to make. I'm still thinking about whether it's good or not, but the viewers will see." Lee and his co-stars Lee Byung-hun and Park Gyu-young, who play the Front Man and Pink Guard No-eul respectively, were effusive in their praise of how Hwang's chose to close out the series. "I thought that director Huang's decision that he had made... he was very determined," Lee Jung-jae said. "I'm sure that he went through a lot of internal debate and struggles because, as we all know, this series has been just hugely successful. So when it's a story that big, how do you bring that to a close as director, writer and creator? And especially for a character like Gi-hun, where do you take him? "And so I know that he listened to a lot of other people's ideas as well, we would have discussions among ourselves, among the cast. He would also discuss it with me and the crew as well, but I believe that director Hwang came up with the most adequate, the most unpredictable, the most meaningful and the most intriguing and entertaining ending possible. "So personally, I am very happy with the finale and you all are going to be able to see where it all ends soon. But I can guarantee you it's not going to be what you think." Lee Byung-hun, on the other hand, implied that while the finale gives the series a satisfying conclusion he feels there's room for more if the audience craves it. "Director Hwang keeps saying it's a finale," the actor reflected. "When I first read it I felt it could be a finale but, at the same time, it could be a new start. I'm not sure [if it definitely is], that's my personal opinion, but if the audience's love and support increase you never know what might happen!" Park added that she looked at the series as a fan, having come into it later than her co-stars, and so that gives her a different and interesting angle: "If I answer it's as a fan, as one of the audience. So if season 2 was the explanation of the expanded universe of Squid Game, in Season 3 all those questions will be answered really clearly and all the characters will make their own decisions and break through all the hardships they're going through." Squid Game season 3 premieres on Netflix on Friday, 27 June.
