Police have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder after a car crash left dozens of people injured during Liverpool's title celebrations in the city centre
Police snipers spotted in Liverpool city centre were not there because of the car crash that left a number of people injured, it has been confirmed. Liverpool's title celebrations were cut short after the vehicle was seen driving through crowds on Water Street. More than 50 people were taken to hospital.
Officers said in a press conference this afternoon that a white British suspect, 53, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drugs. The incident is not being treated as terror related. Following the incident, questions were raised as to why a sniper presence was spotted at the scene, reports the ECHO.
Footage of the incident quickly circulated on social media and eyewitness accounts said people "were flying into the air" as they were hit by the car.
A video of what appeared to be a police sniper team on the Queensway Tunnel Ventilation Tower has circulated on social media, with people questioning "did the police expect an incident?" However, the decision to deploy rooftop sniper teams in the city centre was "purely planning for a major event", the ECHO understands from sources.
Merseyside Police had an armed presence in the city centre due to the scale and magnitude of Liverpool's title-winning parade. This included the Project Servator team, which contains high-visibility armed officers.
The decision to deploy sniper teams is reportedly taken at any event of this significance and size. Previously armed police have been deployed to events in the city including the Labour Party Conference at the ACC Liverpool, last year, the Grand National, and even at Liverpool's Christmas Markets.
The parade celebrating Liverpool's Premier League title win saw crowds gather along the 15km bus route to catch a glimpse of the stars. However, the scenes of joy quickly turned to horror when a car was driven into the crowd.
Merseyside Police is carrying out extensive enquiries to establish the circumstances leading up to the incident, with questions being asked about how the car was able to access a key city centre road that had been closed to traffic because of the parade.
At this afternoon's press conference, Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said: "I want to take the opportunity to pay tribute to the brave members of the emergency services who were on the scene of yesterday's incident within a matter of seconds.
"Following such a shocking incident, they immediately ran towards an extremely uncertain and potentially dangerous situation in an effort to protect members of the public and fellow emergency responders from harm.
"Merseyside Police continues to work with other emergency services, Liverpool City Council, Liverpool City Combined Regional Authority, local hospitals and health providers and Liverpool Football Club collectively in response to this incident.
"An extensive investigation into the precise circumstances of the incident is ongoing, and we continue to ask people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding the incident and refrain from sharing distressing content online."

Video obtained by BFM showed around 100 seated guests awaiting the ceremony as a female violin trio played at dawn before a stage strewn with flowers. The event reportedly cost around £110,000. "Four people were arrested and questioned: the groom, who was believed to be the organiser of the event and is presumed to be British, aged 22; the mother of the child, a 41-year-old Ukrainian woman; and two Latvian nationals aged 55 and 24," a statement from the French prosecutor's office in the nearby town of Meaux said. The 55-year-old Latvian man claimed he was recruited to play the role of the bride's father for 12,000 euros but discovered last minute she was nine years old, local news reports. Disneyland Paris told French newspaper Le Parisien the event was immediately shut down by its team and that guests were stopped from entering the premises. Circumstances around the wedding remain unclear, as to whether it was a stunt or a real ceremony. A medical examination of the young girl found she had not suffered any violence, the prosecutor's office said. A police source said the groom has claimed to be the director of a production company and they were shooting a video. An updated statement from the prosecutors office said: "So it wasn't a wedding, but a staged wedding filmed with around a hundred extras. They privatised Disneyland Paris, pretending it was a real wedding." Two suspects have been charged with 'fraud and breach of trust' against Disneyland Paris. One wedding guest told the Le Parisien: "We all thought we were going to attend a wedding... Everyone was stunned, no one expected it. Disneyland did things very well. "They canceled everything as soon as they realised the bride was a child. We were shocked to see that." Another extra, named Yeleen, who attended the ceremony with her daughter, said: "I saw a little girl dressed in white. I saw her hair prepared with curls and a lady picking her up in her arms. The British woman had been reported missing after failing to return a motorboat she had hired. She was spotted adrift four days later by a ferry heading from mainland Spain to Ibiza A British woman who went missing after a hiring a boat in the Balearic Islands has been found alive after four days. The 39-year-old woman, named locally as Mary Gavin, was at the centre of a massive search operation off the island of Formentera, after she failed to return a 15ft motor boat, she had hired from a firm at La Savina port. She had been due to return the boat the same the next day, but the alarm was raised when she failed to show. It has now been revealed that she was spotted drifting on the boat, by a ferry crossing from Valencia on mainland Spain and the Balearic island of Ibiza. The rescue is said to have occurred around 5pm on Saturday, four days after she was declared missing. A Civil Guard spokesman said: 'The British woman who vanished after hiring a boat in Formentera on Tuesday morning has been found alive.' She is understood to have been transferred to hospital in Valencia to receive medical attention. Her condition was not immediately clear. The vessel, a cream-coloured Quicksilver 475 Axess with a Mercury outboard motor, has been towed to Ibiza by coastguards. Police divers had been incorporated into the search for her on Thursday after Civil Guard and Spanish coastguards helicopters and boats were mobilised. The police force had said on Friday in its first official comments about the disappearance: 'The missing woman is a 39-year-old British national who hired the boat in the port of La Salina in Formentera on Tuesday morning. 'She was supposed to return it around 6pm on Wednesday and when she didn't her friends became worried and raised the alarm.
