Confusion over Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant after mixed messages from Israel on strikes

The Nationala day ago

Israel said it struck Iran's only functioning nuclear power plant along the Gulf coast on Thursday, potentially a major escalation in the war, but an Israeli military official later backtracked by saying "it was a mistake" to have said it was hit.
The confusion came as Israel launched further strikes against Iranian nuclear targets on the seventh day of the war. An assault on the Bushehr power plant, which is located near the UAE and employs technicians from Russia, would widely be seen as a big step.
In its latest comments, the Israeli military would only confirm that Israel had hit the Natanz, Isfahan and Arak nuclear sites in Iran.
Pressed on Bushehr, an Israeli military official said he could neither confirm nor deny that Israel had struck the location, where Iran has a reactor.
Bushehr is Iran's only operating nuclear power plant. It uses Russian fuel that Moscow then takes back when it is spent to reduce proliferation risk.
The head of Russia 's nuclear energy corporation Rosatom warned that an Israeli attack on Bushehr could lead to a "Chernobyl-style catastrophe".
An attack on Bushehr would be "beyond... evil," Russia's state RIA news agency cited Alexei Likhachev as saying.
"If there is a strike on the operational first power unit, it will be a catastrophe comparable to Chernobyl."
Mr Likhachev was referring to the world's worst nuclear disaster in 1986, when a reactor exploded at Chernobyl in Soviet Ukraine.
Russia has evacuated some of its specialists from Bushehr, he said, but the core workforce of hundreds of people remained on site.
"We are prepared for any scenario, including the rapid evacuation of all our employees," Mr Likhachev added.
President Vladimir Putin told journalists in the early hours of Thursday that Israel had promised Russia that Moscow's workers – who are building more nuclear facilities at the Bushehr site – would be safe, even as Israel tries to degrade Iran's nuclear capabilities by force.
It came as the Iran-Israel war entered its seventh day, with a barrage of Iranian missiles hitting Israel on Thursday morning.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has vowed to press on with Israel's biggest attack on Iran until its nuclear programme is destroyed, said Tehran's "tyrants" would pay the "full price".

AI, investment and energy discussed during UAE meeting at White House with Vice President JD Vance

UAE officials met US Vice President JD Vance at the White House on Friday to discuss AI, recent investment initiatives and increased energy co-operation. Dr Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and managing director and group chief executive of Adnoc, along with Yousef Al Otaiba, the UAE's ambassador to the US and Minister of State, took part in the meeting with the US Vice President. The discussions centred on the UAE's commitment to invest $1.4 trillion in the US for artificial intelligence infrastructure, semiconductors, energy and manufacturing. Earlier this week in Washington at the Atlantic Council's Global Energy Forum, Dr Al Jaber reflected on the unique opportunities unfolding for countries around the world – chiefly the burgeoning AI sector. In March, Mr Vance praised the UAE's focus on AI at the American Dynamism Summit. 'One of the things they [UAE] consistently hammer upon … is that if you want to lead in artificial intelligence, you have got to be leading in energy production,' he said. Over the past decade, the UAE − the Arab world's second largest economy − has been working to become an AI frontrunner as it diversifies its economy away from oil. The country's efforts have resulted in the establishment of start-ups as well as partnerships and investments with industry leaders like Microsoft, Nvidia and OpenAI. Through the creation of language models such as Falcon Arabic, the UAE has also sought to ensure aspects of Arabic culture are not left behind in the AI surge, with many large language models based on English-language data. In 2019, the UAE announced the establishment of a university dedicated to AI, Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence. Several years before, the UAE was among the first in the world to appoint an AI Minister, Omar Al Olama.

'Talk to US,' Europe foreign ministers urge Iran as they see 'perilous' moment

European foreign ministers urged Iran on Friday to engage with the United States over its nuclear programme after high-level talks in Geneva aimed at opening negotiations for a new nuclear deal ended with little sign of progress. The talks between the foreign ministers of Germany, Britain, France and the EU with their Iranian counterpart sought to test Tehran's readiness to negotiate despite there being scant prospect of Israel ceasing its attacks soon, diplomats said. "The Iranian Foreign Minister has expressed his willingness to continue discussions on the nuclear programme and more broadly on all issues, and we expect Iran to commit to the discussion, including with the United States, to reach a negotiated settlement," said French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot. Britain's foreign minister David Lammy said the European countries were eager to continue talks with Iran. "This is a perilous moment, and it is hugely important that we don't see regional escalation of this conflict," he said. Tehran, under mounting pressure to agree tough curbs on its nuclear programme to prevent the potential development of an atomic weapon, has repeatedly said it will not talk to the Trump administration until Israeli attacks end. European ministers spoke ahead of their Geneva meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who signalled that Washington was open to direct talks even as it considers joining Israeli strikes intended to smash Tehran's nuclear capacity, diplomatic sources said. Washington did not confirm that, though broadcaster CNN quoted a US official saying President Donald Trump supported diplomacy by allies that could bring Iran closer to a deal.
