No hanging about in Gold Challenge at Greyville
The Equator's southern appearance will be closely watched.

There'll be no dawdling behind the Drill Hall at Greyville on Saturday afternoon; no ambling, loitering, strolling or sauntering. It'll be, 'Quick march! At the double!' – recalling the bad old days when the infantry base resounded with fighting energy.
The 1600m starting pole next to the Drill Hall plays host to 12 horses in the Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge and making the 2025 contest really interesting is a glut of accomplished front runners in the field.
The high-quality line-up includes Equus Horse of the Year, and likely favourite, Dave The King, who always likes to make the pace in a race.
Reigning Durban July champ Oriental Charm does not like to be headed at any stage – and can get a bit annoyed if it happens. The excellent Montien is seldom out of the first two in running, and See It Again performs best when travelling in a handy position.
Other contenders
Those are some of the best middle-distance racehorses in the country who'll be fighting it out for the early lead. But they're up against some sprinters with natural gate speed and cruising power – such as Café Culture and William Robertson.
The real 'milers' in the race, such as Great Plains, Gladatorian and Royal Aussie might be outgunned at the start but will be hoping overeager speedballs cut each other's throats and leave the way clear for 'closers'.
It'll be a good watch. A Grade 1 trophy and R2-million are on the finishing line, while several runners are also getting their acts together for the Hollywoodbets Durban July a month hence.
The Greyville meeting will get massive international exposure with Races 7 to 10 being part of a Hong Kong World Pools Saturday extravaganza that also takes in the famous English Derby at Epsom.
Turffontein meeting
Sunday's meeting at Turffontein racecourse is a bit overshadowed by that glamour, but racing aficionados will watch it keenly. The Jubilee Handicap and the Egoli Mile feature a number of Durban July hopefuls – all out to do well and crack the nod for the big one.
Among them are Legend Of Arthur, Confederate, Atticus Finch, Son Of Raj, Musical Score, Olivia's Way and Immediate Edge. But the most intriguing is surprise July entry The Equator, making his South African debut after being imported from the Irish stables of the world's top trainer Aiden O'Brien.
Nigel Riley, new co-owner of the colt, who is a son of the great Galileo, put out a media statement on Wednesday saying: 'We have been inundated with enquiries about the well-being of The Equator and have decided to appraise the racing public of the situation, so that they can make their own decisions… He went into (trainer) Tony Peter's yard on 28 March, where he has made excellent progress and has put up some eye-catching work.
'Last Sunday, The Equator had a 1600m gallop on the inside track at Turffontein against a couple of horses, including a Grade 1 winner. He won the gallop by three lengths, going away from them, and his work rider was as impressed as onlookers. We look forward to the race. We hope this will assist punters.'

Proteas fixtures: When World Test Championship winners are next in action
A number of senior players are being rested for the two-Test tour of Zimbabwe. The World Test Championship winners are in action again next week, in the first of two Tests against Zimbabwe. Picture: Lubabalo Lesolle/Gallo Images Temba Bavuma and his World Test Championship-winning team will quickly have to put their celebrations behind them as they're already in action again next week. Bavuma and his team have spent much of this week celebrating their Test final triumph over Australia at Lord's last weekend. Besides the squad doing plenty of partying in London last weekend, they also celebrated with their biggest fans at a meet-and-greet in Sandton on Thursday. However, they will soon have to focus on cricket again as the Test team's two-match tour of Zimbabwe starts next week. Zimbabwe Tests The 16-man squad, however, looks a little different to the group that battled the Aussies at Lord's and eventually won by five wickets. Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs have been rested for the series, while fast bowling trio Nandre Burger, Gerald Coetzee and Lizaad Williams, who have had recent injury struggles, were not considered for selection. Five uncapped players will hope to make their Test debuts, namely Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Lesego Senokwane, Codi Yusuf, Dewald Brevis and Prenelan Subrayen. There is also a recall for Zubayr Hamza. It is the Test team's first tour of Zimbabwe since 2014. The two Tests take place in Bulawayo from June 28 and July 6 respectively. India tour The Proteas Test team are then only in action again in November when they play two Tests against India in India. The matches start on November 14 and November 22 respectively. Bavuma and his side will play no Tests over the festive period. Clarity sought on alleged R700m cost of National Dialogue
The Presidency's plan to hold a major National Dialogue in August is being criticised for its potential cost, lack of oversight, and uncertain agenda. Picture: Gallo Images/Die Burger There are concerns about the lack of transparency around President Cyril Ramaphosa's proposed National Dialogue that is meant to take place in a few weeks. Ramaphosa said the country will hold the first leg on 15 August, with the second leg expected to take place next year. Local talks will be held before then. The purpose of this convention is to discuss South Africa's problems and find solutions to them. However, it has been met with anger following an announcement that it could cost more than R700 million. Unions and political parties call for accountability The government has stated that there is no definite figure yet. Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) spokesperson Matthew Parks said he is concerned about the abuse of state funds used for the National Dialogue. 'We can talk about figures like R10 million or R20 million, but R700 million is just ridiculous. 'Government can find ways of ensuring this is done in a manner that is more affordable. We just objected to a VAT hike, it would not make sense for us to agree to this,' he said. Conflicting statements over the proposed budget Parks said Cosatu had engaged with the Presidency and was reassured there is no final figure for how much the dialogue will cost. The amount of R700 million was first estimated by Nkosinathi Biko, executive trustee of the Steve Biko Foundation. Questions about coordination and purpose Rise Mzansi spokesperson Mabine Seabe said: 'The touted R700 million price tag appears excessive, which is why Rise Mzansi will be engaging with President Cyril Ramaphosa on this matter and timelines both in the buildup to and after the National Dialogue. 'We will use our parliamentary oversight authority to ensure that every rand and cent is accounted for.' ActionSA parliamentary leader Athol Trollip said parliamentarians have not been given intricate details of how the National Dialogue will be coordinated. Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya told SAfm this week: 'There isn't a budget, there isn't a number or a cost that the government has committed to. 'All we have is what has been communicated as a proposal that the foundations have put forward. 'Government is going to be the fiscal custodian of the process and it has not yet engaged in formulating a budget. So the debate about R700 million is completely misplaced and unnecessary.' Dialogue 'must be ambitious' Dr Philani Mthembu from the Institute for Global Dialogue said the dialogue, if done correctly, can be an important tool in addressing problematic legislation and policies. ALSO READ: 'Bring all to dialogue': Experts insist national dialogue must be people-driven 'If this dialogue is compared to the Convention for a Democratic South Africa, then it needs to be ambitious in what it is trying to achieve. 'For instance, we must ask if this will open up the debate on reviewing the constitution, what elements of the constitution are working and which need to be revised. 'This dialogue could discuss issues such as electoral reform and whether we are ready for new systems that will hold those in power to account. 'It has to be ambitious, otherwise if we just discuss issues such as national cohesion and service delivery, we already know these challenges. Discussing the deep issues will have more impact.' A noble idea? Advocate Sipho Mantula, a researcher at Thabo Mbeki African School of Public & International Affairs, said the idea of a national convention is a noble one. 'Conventions are normally called when there is a national crisis or key issues that affect the country, from governance to the rule of law to the socio-cultural and economic conditions.' Mantula said all state organs and institutions should assist in ensuring the success of the National Dialogue and no-one should be left behind. 'It should begin with local conventions and then provincial conventions that ultimately lead to the National Dialogue,' he said.
